A Message From General Manager/COO

St Ives Country Club • 3

Dear St Ives Country Club Members,

Thank you for your patience and support during these troubling times of the COVID-19 pandemic. I know the last thing you wanted to hear from us was that one of our staff tested positive. We have been very fortunate to only have three individuals test positive overall. Other

Clubs and businesses have experienced multiple employees testing positive simultaneously which resulted in prolonged closures to their operations. I am thankful we have not had to experience such misfortune. I assure you we will continue to remain proactive with our staff to help prevent future positive tests.

I am happy to report the Golf Shop merchandise is now owned by the Club. Hiring Tami Fors as our Golf Shop Manager was a positive step in the right direction to ownership. Tami will be assisting in the buying and merchandising for the Golf Shop. Please stop by the Golf Shop and say hi to Tami. She is ready to assist you with your golf needs. In addition, the VIP Merchandise member's benefits will be honored through the end of October 2020.

The search for a Head Golf Professional is well underway. We contracted with the PGA’s ExecuSearch recruitment arm to assist the St Ives Search Committee with the selection process; we received over 75 resumes. The field of candidates were narrowed down to 23 who were each given a video interview. Since the conclusion of those interviews, the candidate field has been reduced to the final 12. It is the goal of the Search Committee to announce our new Head Golf Professional by mid-August in hopes of a starting date in early September.

Please don’t hesitate to let me know how we can improve your St Ives Club experience. Thank you all for making St Ives a special place to call home. You can always email me at [email protected] with your feedback.

Sincerely,

Best regards,

Mike Davis, CCM, PGAGeneral Manager/COO

On March 12th, I received an email notification announcing the Spring ALTA season was cancelled due to COVID -19. I would like to thank the Membership for the continued support by continuing to come to the Courts.

The St Ives Coaches have been extremely dedicated to the adult and junior clinics, junior tennis camps and private lessons. Our Memorial Day and July 4th mixers were a fantastic success occupying all 16 Courts. It has been a pleasure watching everyone enjoy these events; I realize how important the game of tennis is to all of you.

On an unfortunate note, due to the stringent safety guidelines in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 the Credo Professional Tennis Tournament and the 27th Annual Pro Member Invitational will not be happening this year.

Hopefully in 2021, we can bring these events back to the Club. The next major tennis event will be our Adult Club Championships in August. The format of this championship will be directed like a sanctioned USTA Tournament. We will conclude the event with a cookout while watching the finals unfold.

On July 1st, we welcomed our new Pro Shop Manager/Administrative Assistant Mrs. Bonnie Weaver. I have included Bonnie's picture and a brief bio in this newsletter for those that my have missed the emailed announcement. We are excited to have Bonnie join our St Ives team.

On behalf of the entire St Ives Tennis Staff, I wish every Member good health and happy times on the Courts.

“Serving You”

Creig,USPTA Elite Pro

Bonnie brings 18 years of experience as the Manager for the Tennis Pro Shop at the Country Club of Roswell. She is an avid tennis player serving as captain of many ALTA teams and her educational background is in the field of fashion merchandising.

Juniorscourtside

In years past, at this time, the St Ives juniors would have completed their Junior Summer USTA season, but we are now only halfway through the season. Good luck to the teams battling for a playoff spot. Just about three months ago we were about to peak with our Junior Academies and League play, then the whole tennis scene changed in Atlanta and around the country. Since then, various safety measures have been implemented to our Junior Academy Programs. I’ve included the safety measures within the academy information you will see in this section.

We are gearing up to begin the junior fall ALTA season. If your child is interested in participating on a Fall ALTA team, please contact the Tennis Center so that we can assist in getting them registered on a team. The roster registration deadline for fall junior ALTA ends August 14th. So, don’t delay!

I’d like to extend my gratitude to everyone for their support and trust during these challenging past few months. See on the court!

Coach Stuart

JUNIOR ACADEMY DESCRIPTIONS

Pre-Academy (10U) - Pre-Academy is comprised of both beginner and intermediate 10U player’s ready to play on the full-size quick start court. The training sessions are designed to continue building athletic skills while learning or refining the skills necessary to serve, rally and score. These players will demonstrate an understanding of proper technique and maintain that technique during point and match play. These are players who enjoy league play but have yet to enter tournament competition

Orange Dot Academy (10U) - Orange Dot is for players who are looking to prepare for the challenge of USTA state sanctioned tournaments. At the beginning of each session, coaches will address proper self-warm-up techniques and will have players begin with this phase. Orange Dot players learn to have confidence in their own development and interest in competition is growing. This group is fundamentally sound in both movement and technique and are beginning to work on match and player strategies. Players will utilize different tactics and strategies and are in early stages of developing a game based upon their own personal strengths. Emphasis is placed on competing in USTA state sanctioned tournaments on a regular basis.

Full Court Green Dot Academy Training (12U) - Competitive Green Dot training sessions are high intensity, tournament-level, training sessions that serve as a potential pathway to the high-performance Champions Program. Practices will consist of a 15-30-minute fitness session followed by progressive dead ball training, live ball and consistency work, and supervised point and match play.

Elite Academy (11+) - The primary goal of the Academy is to provide a consistent and encouraging learning environment that encourages each junior to reach his or her full personal tennis potential. The Academy will challenge the students through different drills, conditioning and match strategy. Monthly tactical themes will give the students enough repetition to have a solid technical base in all strokes. This program is designed for students who have just started their first tournaments or are about to start. Training in the St Ives Academy along with private lessons with the St Ives Country Club Tennis Professionals, will create a junior tennis atmosphere and program highly regarded in the Tennis Club Community.

Future Champions Red Ball Academy (6 & Under) - The Red Ball Academy is designed for beginner to intermediate players. Future Champions is a perfect opportunity for children to learn the fundamentals of tennis. Activities focus on building agility, balance and coordination while developing the on-court skills needed to serve, rally, and score. Prior to moving to the next stage of the Academy, these Future Champion’s will be able to demonstrate an understanding of basic technique and begin rallies with other Academy students.

As I write my first newsletter article as superintendent at St Ives I want to first say “THANK YOU” to all the Members for the warm welcome I have received. You could not have asked for a crazier time to start a new job as the same time a pandemic was working its way around the globe. My first few weeks were spent working along with The Allied Golf Group to help keep golf open in Georgia along with adjusting to a whole new property, new members, new employees and hopefully a once in a lifetime virus that forced us all to adjust our lifestyles. Not an easy task but each of you made that transition all the easier for me during these uncertain times that continue. The passion and commitment to improve the Club experience from St Ives Members is contagious. Your passion has motivated me to ensure we deliver the product you expect on a consistent basis. An opportunity I hope to have for many years to come.

Speaking of passion from the Members I have had the opportunity to tour our Golf Course with the Golf and Grounds Committee. During these tours we outlined several areas that can be addressed to improve the golf experience. Some are BIG projects that will take a lot of time. However, the majority are smaller project that St Ives Turf Care will slowly chip off the list.

During the dead of summer 99% of our focus is spent on basic course upkeep and the growing grass. Having over 100 acres of grass that starts growing back the second it is cut, is no easy feat. As the temperatures cool and grass slows you will start to see the smaller course enhancements come to life.

Turf Carecorner

By now I am sure many of you know Turf Care utilizes both Facebook and Instagram to communicate daily Course progress and happenings. We utilize these two social media platforms due to the ease and expeditious way of getting you the information. Our goal is to keep everyone fully informed to avoid unwelcomed surprises as you play the Course. Utilizing these platforms allow Turf Care to communicate all kinds of Course information as it is happening; as well as explaining how and why it is happening and what we are doing to fix any issues. Of course, some humor is thrown into the mix to help brighten your day.

You may have noticed me standing on the Tee Box, hanging out on the Practice Green or following a tournament group around the Course. I do this so that I can interact with each of you and listen to your feedback about your Course. Please feel free to share your thoughts, ideas and concerns. Although I cannot promise to execute every suggestion there are many that can be done. Many of the tips and concerns I have heard over the past few months have or will be addressed, ultimately improving the golf experience for every Member.

See You On The Course!

While playing your best game requires a good skill set, adapting to the course and course conditions also play a large role. This time of year, heat and humidity can easily take over our strength and concentration. Make sure you are following the proper steps to better prepare yourself for conserving your energy throughout your round.

BEAT THE HEAT

Hydration - Drink plenty of water up to 24 hours before and after your round, as well as during. In extreme heat, you should try to drink 6-8 fl. ounces of water every 30 minutes.

Skin Protection - Make sure to apply sunscreen once every hour to ensure better protection of your skin.

Clothing - Wear light colored, loose fitting breathable clothing. You will feel more comfortable when you start to sweat.

Nutrition - It might not be best to eat a heavy meal prior to being in the heat for 4-5 hours. To maintain concentration, consume light snacks every couple of hours.

Warm up - Avoid overexerting yourself before you tee off. Keep your warm up routine brief and save your energy for where it counts!

When the St Ives Alarm System goes off the Course is closed and we ask that you please come in immediately. Remember to always seek shelter when you see a storm coming or when lightning is close. A solid 15 second blast sound means seek shelter and come off the Course. Three short blasts is the all clear sound at which time you can resume play.
