TULSA2011 NOTESAfter dropping a 3-1 decision to SMU on Oct. 5, Tulsa has rattled of six consecutive wins to improve to 19-5 overall and a league-best 10-1 in C-USA play. The Golden Hurricane is led by Tyler Henderson, who was voted as the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year. Henderson has totaled a conference-best 411 kills (4.89 k/s) this sea-son while playing in every set for Tulsa.

LAST OUTING vs. Memphis (Oct. 16, 2011)MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis women’s volleyball ran into a buzz saw Sunday as the Tulsa Golden Hurricane swept the Tigers, 25-22, 25-19, 25-11, to record their eighth C-USA victory. Memphis (15-7, 4-5 C-USA) was led by 11 kills from Altrese Hawkins and 12 digs from Alexsandra Petronijevic.“Tulsa is a very good team, and there is a reason they are first in the league,” Head coach April Jauregui said. “They play a low error game.”

Tulsa established an early 8-4 lead in set one after three straight Tiger attack errors. Memphis fought back with a 4-1 spurt to cut the deficit to just one point at 13-12 but was thwarted in the comeback attempt by a kill from Tulsa’s Tyler Henderson. However, the Tigers stayed close and got another chance at 16-18 when a Tulsa service error followed by an attack error allowed Memphis to knot the score. The two teams then traded 3-0 spurts to set up a showdown at 21-21. Tulsa ultimately won the four-point battle with back-to-back blocks to take the set 25-22.

In the second set, it was Memphis who took an early lead at 5-3 but saw the advantage quickly evaporate on the strength of a 5-0 Tulsa run. Lauren Hawkins finally got a score for the Tigers with a kill down the line, but the Golden Hurricane forged ahead to go up 15-8. After trading scores, Memphis responded with a 6-0 streak of its own to get within one point, but a timely Tulsa block left the Tigers still trailing. From there, the Golden Hurricane sprinted to a 25-19 win.

“We had our chances in the first two sets and kept it close, but our unforced errors cost us,” Jauregui said. “We need to cross the hurdle of thinking we can be good to believing that we are. We will be ready to play Rice on Friday.”

The Tigers once again started fast in set three only to see Tulsa roar back with nine straight points to go up 11-4. Hawkins finally broke through with a kill to get Memphis back on the board, but the damage had already been done as the Golden Hurricane rode the momentum to a 25-11 victory.

SMU2011 NOTESSMU brings a 9-14 overall record, including 5-6 in C-USA play into this weekend’s competition. Marshall upended SMU in a five-set battle in the Mustangs’ last game. SMU is led by two powerful attackers in Jessica Oliver and Dana Powell. Oliver leads the team with 275 kills, while Powell has 254 kills of her own. Kelli Becerra is the main setter for SMU and averages 8.01 assists per set.

LAST OUTING - Oct. 14, 2011MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers went down to the wire before pulling out a five-set victory over SMU Friday night, defeating the Mustangs 25-18, 16-25, 15-25, 25-17, 15-13.

The Tigers started strong in set one, jumping out to an 8-4 lead on strong play from Altrese Hawkins and Lauren Hawkins. SMU quickly recovered and had a chance to tie at 10-9 but were stymied by a block from the Hawkins duo. Altrese Hawkins continued to dominate of-fensively, hammering home kills all over the court to keep the Tigers in front. Trailing 19-13, the Mustangs called timeout and regrouped to reel off four straight points, forcing Memphis to talk things over. The Tigers cleaned up out of the break, scoring six of the final seven points of the set to record a 25-18 win. Altrese Hawkins finished with seven kills on .500 hitting in the frame.

Despite two early kills from Altrese Hawkins in set two, SMU managed to pull out a 7-4 lead. The two teams traded points from there as neither team was able to fully claim momentum. The Mustangs were finally able to string together three straight points to build a commanding 17-11 advantage and rode the wave in, taking the set 25-16. SMU hit an impressive .478 in the set while holding the Tigers to just .094.

Set three was tight early on until an 11-2 Mustang run established a 15-7 SMU lead. The Tigers called timeout in an attempt to right the ship but were too mistake-prone to make any dent in the deficit. Memphis did manage to cut the lead to five at one point but would come no closer as the Mustangs posted a 25-15 victory. SMU put up six blocks in the third set while holding Memphis to -.276 hitting.

The Tigers came out with a vengeance in set four, scoring the first six points before the Mus-tangs could even sniff the scoreboard. A combination of timely hitting from Altrese Hawkins and SMU attack errors contributed to the lead. The Mustangs slowly climbed back into the set, coming within three points, but were continually held at bay. With strong offensive play, Mem-phis eventually took the must-win set, 25-17, to force a decisive fifth game.

The Tigers took it home in the fifth set, 15-12.

CONFERENCE USA

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Confer-ence USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excel-lence has been the league’s guid-ing principle and remains today a common thread for a promising fu-ture. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men’s and women’s programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leader-ship in athletics, academics and in our communities. All C-USA institutions sponsor Divi-sion I-A football, along with several other men’s and women’s athletic pro-grams, many of which compete regu-larly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (bas-ketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball). The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Com-missioner’s Honor Roll and the Com-missioner’s Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 post-graduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institu-tional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing stu-dent-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic stand-ing and participation in their elected sport.
