CONVENTION SITEThe Cobo Center is a world-class meeting and convention facility, located along a beautifully restored international riverfront in the heart of a vibrant and transformed downtown Detroit. The core of AAJA’s convention programing will take place in the center which is in close proximity to exceptional restaurants, lively bars and pubs, three Las Vegas-style casinos and six new hotels. Cobo is physically linked to downtown Detroit hotels and entertainment districts by the “People Mover”, an elevated railway system.

HOTEL The Detroit Marriott at The Renaissance is the host hotel for AAJA’s 22nd Annual National Convention. The hotel will be the site for AAJA’s special events such as the annual Silent Auction, Gala Scholarship & Awards Banquet, and Karaoke Night. This downtown Detroit hotel is located in the GM Renaissance Center, which provides convenient access to shopping, restaurants and entertainment. FROM THE CONVENTION CO-CHAIRSWelcome to AAJA’s first national convention in Michigan, the state in the shape of a hand. The city is revved up to help bring journalists together to commemorate AAJA’s 30th anniversary and lead the news industry. Be prepared for a little celebration and to get a little bit of “R-E-S-P-E-C-T.” An international gateway with Canada on our border, Detroit is home to General Motors, Ford and Chrysler; Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, and championship sports teams. The convention will be an ideal way for you to learn new skills, meet new friends and recruit new employees. It will be a chance to recharge, reconnect and reflect on how far we’ve come and on how much work we still need to do. Programs will emphasize digital journalism, adding more diversity to your coverage and newsrooms and what is unique about Detroit. You’ll have a chance to examine the impact of 9/11 on the nation’s oldest and most concentrated Arab American population, and visit the Arab American National Museum. You’ll see what’s happened since the 1980s, when the death of Vincent Chin, the victim of a hate crime, galvanized the Asian-American community locally and nationally and sparked a movement for social justice and unity that continues today. And you’ll have fun.

August is a perfect time for you to ride the People Mover to the ballpark to hear the Tigers roar; to explore the racial integration of popular music at the Motown Historical Museum and to enjoy the automotive center of the world. And who knows, with the budding film industry here, you even might see some stars. We look forward to seeing you!

AAJA is very proud to bring our 22nd-annual convention to the cultural melting pot that is America’s Motor City. Detroit celebrates diversity and has a strong history of innovation and ambition. In many ways, Detroit’s story mirrors our own: In challenging times, we redefine and reinvent -- and we emerge stronger than ever.

This is a momentous year for AAJA as we mark our 30th anniversary. An entire generation of journalists has grown up within a network of people who not only share each other’s cultural values but who share a passion for the profession of journalism.

There’s no better time than the annual convention to engage with your fellow AAJA members, learn new skills and gain insights into the industry that can help you move ahead with your career. More than ever, our workshops will equip you with essential tools for journalistic success as we offer training in industry trends and technology, guide our colleagues who find themselves at a career crossroads, and focus on how digital media can allow us to connect with our audiences in innovative ways. And you’ll have plenty of opportunities to network, starting with our opening reception at the Arab American National Museum.

While preparing for our future, we’ll also learn from our past. Some of AAJA’s veterans were pivotal in reporting the aftermath of Vincent Chin’s death, which galvanized the Asian American civil rights movement. That hate crime in 1982 was a turning point for Asian America that continues to resonate. Helen Zia’s incisive writing and Corky Lee’s riveting photographs were on the front lines of explaining an injustice to the world. These lessons from our history can help shape how we approach own communities today, ensuring that they are covered with fairness and respect.

It’s time to engage—with our stories, with each other and with AAJA. I look forward to welcoming you August 10 to Detroit!

Attendees will have the opportunity to study reporting, writing, editing and producing on multiple platforms and have a chance to discuss social media innovations and the latest news industry trends. We intend to offer workshops that emphasize practical lessons and hands-on training, as well as interactive panels that will predict where the news industry is headed and offer ways on how to prepare for it. RULES & REGULATIONS

Nothing shall be constructed, built, installed or used as part of or in connection with any exhibit that does not conform with the requirements of federal, state and municipal laws, ordinances, fire codes and regulations. AAJA retains the right to make additional rules and regulations as deemed necessary and proper.

1. EXHIBIT SPACE. The exhibit space contracted for herein is to be used strictly for the Exhibitor whose name appears on the Contract for the space. It is specifically understood and agreed that the Exhibitor will neither sublet nor assign any portion of the space contracted for herein. Exhibitors who resell or sublet space or render their badges to unauthorized persons will forfeit their exhibit space and/or future privileges. Exhibitor must show only goods manufactured and/or distributed, or services provided by them in the regular course of business. No individual, company or organization not assigned exhibit space will be permitted to solicit business within the exhibit area. No exhibits or displays of any kind are permitted in rooms or suites.

2. INDEMNITY. Exhibitor agrees to indemnify and hold harmless AAJA from any and all liability to any person or persons of any conditions of the Rules and Regulations, or by any reason of any condition, defective or otherwise, of any apparatus, equipment or fixtures furnished by Exhibitor in connections with its exhibit. Exhibitor further agrees to hold harmless AAJA, its officers, employees and members from any act or omission of said Exhibitor, or any of its agents, servants or employees. Indemnity includes, but is not limited to, claims or copyright, trademark or patent infringement, unfair competition and product liability. The Exhibitor, on submissions of the Career Fair & Expo Booth & Exhibitor Registration Form, expressly releases the forenamed association and individuals from any and all claim for such loss, damage or injury. Further, Exhibitor assumes the entire responsibility and liability for losses, damages and claims arising out of injury or damage to Exhibitor’s displays, equipment or other property brought upon the premises.

3. USE OF AISLES, ETC. The aisles, passageways and overhead spaces remain strictly under control of AAJA, and no signs, decorations, banners, advertising matter or special exhibits will be permitted in them except by special permission granted by AAJA. All exhibits must remain within the confines of their own spaces.

4. SECURITY NON-LIABILITY. AAJA will provide security during the hours the exhibit area is closed, but will have no liability for any loss or damage sustained by Exhibitor during such hours or any other time, whatever the cause.

5. BOOTH LOCATIONS AND FLOOR PLAN. Whenever possible, space assignments will be made by AAJA in keeping with the preferences specified by the Exhibitor. AAJA, however, reserves the right to make the final determination of all space assignments in the best interest of the exposition. AAJA reserves the right to alter the booth layout and location of the exhibit spaces, at its sole discretion, in the best interest of the exposition. Exhibit(s) must be confined to and within the space(s) leased.

6. FORCE MAJEURE. Should any emergency arise prior to the opening date of the exhibit that would prevent its scheduled opening, including but not limited to acts of God, government authority, disaster, terrorist attack in the location of hotel, civil unrest or other emergencies, any of which make it inadvisable, illegal or impossible to provide the facilities for the exhibit halls, it is expressly understood

and agreed that AAJA may reschedule the event as near to the original date and site as possible. AAJA may retain as much as the pre-payment for exhibit spaces as it deems necessary to cover expenses incurred should it be impossible to reschedule the conference. Regardless of the reason for cancellation or postponement of the conference, AAJA will not be held responsible for any loss by Exhibitor resulting therefrom. 7. EXHIBITOR APPOINTED CONTRACTORS. Should Exhibitor utilize an exhibit contractor other than the Official Show Contractor, AAJA and Official Show Contractor will require a certificate of insurance and list of all workers’ names assigned and a signed EAC form, 30 days prior to event.

8. FREIGHT HANDLING/DRAYAGE. The Official Show Contractor shall handle all Exhibitor freight shipments within convention facility. The use of loading areas/docks will be limited to Official Show Contractor exclusively. Exhibitor may not hand carry exhibitory into the exhibit area through the “front of house” entrances. The use of dollies, hand trucks or wheeled carts by Exhibitor in common areas, services areas, or on the exhibit floor is prohibited.

9. NON-ENDORSEMENT. The exhibiting products and services does not constitute an endorsement by AAJA of any product or service exhibited. Exhibitors are not permitted to represent in any manner that its goods or services have been endorsed by AAJA.

10. OFFICIAL CONTRACTOR. Exhibitor must use exposition management-appointed contractors for electrical work, plumbing, material handling, rigging, cleaning, standard show rental furniture and floor covering, and telephones. Official show contractors are recommended for other services. Order forms are provided in the exhibitor kit.

11. DAMAGE TO PROPERTY. Exhibitor is liable for any damage caused to building floors, walls or columns, or to standard booth equipment, or to another exhibitor’s property or the convention venue.

12. SET-UP AND DISMANTLING. Exhibitor must set up on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST. Every exhibit must be fully staffed and operational on Thursday and Friday, August 11-12, 2011 between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST.

Exhibitor’s displays must not be dismantled or packed in preparation for removal prior to Friday, August 12, 2011, 6 p.m. EST. The deadline for completion of the dismantling and removal of displays will be Friday, August 12, 2011, 8 p.m. PST. At this time, all exhibit displays or materials left in the booths without instructions will be packed and shipped at the discretion of AAJA and all charges will be applied to Exhibitor.

13. CANCELLATION POLICY. All requests for refunds must be submitted in writing to the AAJA National Office and received on or before July 8, 2011. A $50 administrative fee will be deducted from recruiter registration cancellations per transaction. A $150 fee will be deducted from booth cancellations. No refunds after July 8, 2011. No refund requests by phone. NO EXCEPTIONS.

GENERAL INFORMATION Register early, as booths are limited. Booths will only be reserved with advance payment. Each 10’ x 10’ booth includes a draped table, four chairs, waste basket and signage with the name of your company. Furniture, computer, electricity and internet can be ordered through an exhibitor kit which will be provided at a later date.

BOOTH COORDINATION & REGISTRATIONConfirmation of booth registration will be e-mailed to the Booth Coordinator indicated on the following page. All exhibitors are provided one (1) complimentary registration per purchased booth. All exhibitors receiving convention registration are subject to all requirements indicated on the membership form. The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) was founded in 1981 by a small group of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) journalists who felt a need to support one another and to encourage more AAPIs to pursue journalism at a time when there were few AAPI faces in the media. Today, AAJA has more than 1,400 members in 21 chapters across the U.S. and Asia, AAJA’s largest membership bases are generally concentrated in metropolitan areas on the West Coast (Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle), East Coast (New York City and Washington, D.C.) and Mid-West (Chicago). Members are also organized in other areas throughout the U.S. (Arizona, Atlanta, Denver, Florida, Hawai’i, Michigan, Minnesota, New England, North Carolina, Philadelphia, Portland, Sacramento, Texas, and San Diego). In addition, AAJA has a growing number of members working throughout Asia—in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing, and Bangladesh, which underscores the rapid growth of media properties in Asia and points the way to future expansion of the organization.

Our members cover a range of journalism experience from student to professional, plus those working on the business side of journalism, in academia and in related fields. They work in a variety of media delivered in print, through broadcast and online. For more than two decades, AAJA has been the premier journalism organization that AAPIs turn to for scholarships, professional training, resources for accurate coverage and advocacy for diversity within the news industry. Our programs span the careers beginning with high school students, mentoring and training at the college level and encouraging life-long improvement in the craft, movement into management and the ability to adapt to the changing media. AAJA is proud to include among its members some of the top journalists in the country, from network news anchors and reporters to Pulitzer Prize-winning writers, editors and photographers, to national radio show producers and major magazine editors and publishers.
