2011 BIZBASH HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Join BizBash as we induct two event professionals into the BizBash Chicago Hall of Fame during the morning general session. The BizBash Hall of Fame was created to recognize and reward key event strategists who have made significant contributions to furthering the event industry’s goals. BizBash proudly honors the following inductees:

George JewellFounder, Jewell Events CateringJewell Events Catering

When George Jewell founded George L. Jewell Catering Services in 1967, he had already honed his exuberant and innovative style through years of experience in traditional dining service. He was schooled in hotel management at Acton University and Oxford, in his native England. He gained indispensable skills and knowledge while apprentic-ing at some of Europe’s finest hotels, including Brown’s and Grosvenor House in London, and George V in Paris. Working for elite London caterer Searcy heightened his interest in and knowledge of off-site catering. Working first out of a small florist shop, Jewell began serving afternoon tea sandwiches to clients who came to the shop to discuss their orders. The first event he ever “catered” was a tray of hors d’oeuvres he prepared and delivered himself. From that first hors d’oeuvre tray grew a multimillion-dollar company, now operating out of a 40,000-square-foot facility, with a fleet of vehicles and enough warehoused equipment to serve a formal sit-down dinner for 2,000 people. And after almost 50 years in the industry, George Jewell still engages in hands-on manage-ment and continues as the spokesman of his company. His impassioned enthusiasm for special events and his dedication to excellence set the tone for the entire company.

Michelle MahoneyDirector of Worklife, Leo Burnett-ChicagoLeo Burnett

Michelle Mahoney puts passion and purpose into everything she does. This is clearly evident in the hundreds of events she has worked on. Her days are filled with interesting assign-ments, such as finding the perfect space for a world-famous artist to hosting a brainstorming session with people who can help bring cutting-edge ideas to the table. Small, reachable goals have lead to much success. She attributes this to the inspiring people she gets to work with and to keeping the overall objective in the forefront. She loves to see her ideas come to life, such as when she asked employees to give back to the community during an annual anniversary event, which has so far raised more than $50,000. Then there are the behind-the-scenes efforts she puts forth, such as using local farmers and biodegradable products, supplying leftover food to shelters, and bringing flower arrangements to nursing homes after an event. For Mahoney, this brings the success of those events to another level, one that allows her and Leo Burnett to be socially responsible.

FEATURED GUEST PERFORMANCE

4 – 4:45 p.m.Location: Main Stage, Afternoon General Session

2010 American Idol winner : Lee DeWyze

About Lee DeWyze:

With his rough-hewn voice and laid-back Midwestern charm, Lee DeWyze won over millions of viewers as a contestant and even-tual winner of the ninth season of American Idol. An accomplished singer, guitarist, and songwriter who had already built a following on the Chicago club scene by the time he audi-tioned for Idol, DeWyze displays his true nature as an artist on his major-label debut Live It Up. The title track captures the easy-going sprit of the album — a breezy blend of rootsy pop, rock, and folk, anchored by DeWyze’s soulful, husky voice and bright-sounding acoustic guitar.

DeWyze created his own musical memories growing up with three siblings in Mount Prospect, Illinois, where his mother worked at a local hospital and his father was a postal carrier. When DeWyze was 14, he hauled his dad’s old guitar out of the closet and begged him to get it restrung so he could learn how to play. Working with a book of Beatles chords his father gave him, DeWyze began to teach himself basic progressions.

As time went on, DeWyze’s musicianship improved and he began writing his own songs. In January 2010, DeWyze found himself, at the urging of his bandmates, standing in line at Chicago’s United Center along with 12,000 aspiring singers waiting to try out for American Idol.

In August 2010, DeWyze was back at Chicago’s United Center, this time to headline the “American Idol Live” tour — a far cry from that first cattle call audition that sealed his future: putting out Live It Up on 19 Recordings/RCA Records. “Releasing an album on a major label is why I did the show,” DeWyze says. “American Idol didn’t teach me who I was as an artist. I already knew who I was. The hard part was learn-ing how to be on the show, avoiding cameras flying around, and surviving the judging panel. But my attitude was to go out there, sing the songs, have fun, and whatever happens, happens. Every week I was still there, I felt grateful. Even though I hadn’t won, this is what I would be doing. I just want to make music that I love and that other people will love.”

IA ABOUT BIZBASH MEDIA

BizBash Media is committed to creating a community for corporate event and meeting planners. Through our magazines, Web sites, and trade shows, we enable event planners to share ideas, choose venues, save time, and peek over the fence to find inspiration. BizBash offers fresh ideas, creative people, and unique sources that connect buyers and sellers online, in print, and in person. BizBash covers the following markets: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Orlando, Boston, Las Vegas, Toronto, and Washington, D.C.

BizBash’s National Venue Guide lists venues nationwide in all major markets. The National Venue Guide, both in print and online, has quickly become the source for locating the best venues and learning about what has changed since last year.

BizBash magazine delivers quality editorial content covering the event industry, with a lively approach that gives readers creative solutions and ideas they can use. BizBash reports on the behind-the-scenes planners who are the celebrities of the special event world. Who threw it, who produced it, who designed it, who lit it, and where it all happened are what matters, along with how well it all went down.

The BizBash.com Web site complements BizBash magazine and is an essential online research tool. It provides users with event intelligence including: reports from the latest events and industry news; information about more than 7,000 vendors; access to archived pictures and coverage of past events; archived magazine issues; a job board dedicated to special-event-oriented employment opportunities; and the continuously updated BizBash Masterplanner Calendar, which enables users to list upcoming events for the current year and beyond.

BizBash eNewsletters are weekly emails featuring the latest news and freshest ideas available on BizBash.com, for those who need to know now.

Through five annual trade shows, BizBash brings our community together for face-to-face interaction and inspiration. BizBash Expo & Awards shows attract thousands of corporate and independent event and meeting planners, as well as sales, marketing, advertising, and public relations professionals constantly on the hunt for new ideas and resources. Planners attend professional development seminars that feature the industry’s top speakers.
