The 2011-12season marks

coach Casey Converse's 27th year of coachingcollege swimming and his 24th at the Air ForceAcademy. With an overall dual meet record of258-181-2 at Air Force, Converse is the win-ningest swim coach in Academy history.

Air Force is coming off a successful 2010-11campaign, which saw seven school records set, including all four relay events. In addition, AirForce had 17 swims that cracked the school’sall-time top 10 list.

Converse recorded his 200th victory at theAcademy during the 2002-03 season to pass Lt.Col. Paul Arata in total wins at Air Force. Con-verse enters the 2009-10 season with a 266-197-2 career record, which includes athree-year stint at New Mexico State.

“I am grateful for the successes we haveachieved as a team here at the Academy,” saidConverse. “Anyone who knows anything aboutour program over the past 20 years knows thatthe credit for all the victories we have enjoyedgoes to the tremendously dedicated officer-coaches and cadet-athletes. On a personallevel, I am struck by what a privilege it is towork at the Academy and to be a part of thehistory of this great institution.”

Converse continued, “I am fortunate to havebeen acquainted with two of the ‘founding fa-thers’ of the swim program at the Academy.Bob Nugent and Paul Arata both wore many

hats during their time as officer-head coaches, but both expressed their passion and bestmemories in terms of their coaching opportu-nities. As the first full-time civilian head coach,I feel fortunate to be able to devote the largestpart of my energies to building the swimmingand diving programs. This is a luxury that for-mer officer-coaches did not have.”

After guiding the men's and women's swim-ming programs for 10 years, Converse is in his13th season coaching only the women and his24td season overall at the Academy. Conversehas built an outstanding program with bothteams over the last two decades. Over the pastfew seasons, Converse has more than met thechallenge of transforming the women's squadfrom a dominant Division II program to a re-spected member of the Mountain West Con-ference.

For eight seasons (1989-96), Converse directedthe women to an outstanding 73-21 record atthe Division II level. The Falcons were dominantin the Division II ranks, winning five conferencechampionships (Continental Divide and PacificCollegiate) and two national championships(1995 and 1996). Additionally, the women fin-ished in the top 10 nationally five times.

Individually, Converse has coached 32 differentathletes who have earned first-team All-Amer-ica honors a total of 178 times. He has alsoguided six athletes to 13 national titles, fourrelay teams to national titles (including the1996 400-medley relay team that established

an NCAA Division IIrecord), 10 swim-mers to WesternAthletic Conferencetitles and twoMountain WestConference champi-ons.

In 1998, ConnieCann became thesecond Falcon tocompete in theNCAA Division IWomen's Champi-onships. Under Con-verse's guidance,

Cann finished fifth in the WAC Championshipsin the 100 butterfly before going on to finish21st in that event at the NCAA Championships.

No stranger to national acclaim, Converse hasearned coach of the year honors a total of fivetimes at either the NCAA Division II level, theWAC or the Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Div-ing Conference.

As impressive as his record is in the pool ofcompetition, Converse has also coached ath-letes that have accomplished a great deal aca-demically. A total of 68 athletes have earnedacademic all-conference honors 119 timesunder coach Converse, leading all Academyteams in this category.

In 2009, 10 Falcon swimmers and divers earnedacademic all-conference honors. The Falconsalso had 10 academic all-conference honoreesin 2004, when the CSCAA named Air Force aScholar All-American team with a 2.990 cumu-lative grade-point average.

Prior to arriving at the Academy, Converseguided the swimming program at New MexicoState. His three-year tenure may have beenshort, but the Aggies benefited from Converse'sknowledge. The women achieved their firstwinning season in a decade as they went 6-5 in1988 while the men recorded their best finishever (fourth) at the Pacific Coast Athletic Asso-ciation (PCAA) Championships. A total of 10swimmers qualified for the U.S. Nationals, while 37 school records were established. Con-verse netted a dual meet record of 12-35 whilein Las Cruces.

Before his college coaching career began, Con-verse was the assistant coach of the CincinnatiPepsi Marlin Swim Team. In 1984, he guidedthe Mid-American swim team in Topeka, Kan.,and from 1981-84, he served as Mid-America'shead age group coach.

His coaching career began in 1980 in San Anto-nio, Texas, as he was the Metropolitan YMCA'shead master's coach.

Converse was a member of the coaching stafffor the U.S. Long Distance swimming team atthe Pan Pacific Championships.

2011-12 Season Outlook

2011-12 Air Force Women’s Swimming & Diving 6 GoAirForceFalcons.com

Air Force women’s swimming & diving entersthe 2011-12 season with much enthusiasm and loyambions. A new era of Falcon swimming also beginsas Air Force will host home compeon in the newlyrefurbished Cadet Natatorium.

The Falcons have steadily built up the talentlevel in the program, blending a solid returning corewith another standout freshman class. Head swimcoach Casey Converse enters his 24th season at AirForce with what he feels may be one of his most tal-ented teams since making the step up to the Div. Ilevel.

Air Force returns several standout performersfrom the 2011-12 season which saw several schoolrecords broken at the Mountain West ConferenceChampionships. The Falcons return 20 leerwinners, including a pair of divers from last season. The Fal-cons return their last two team MVP’s in junior HaleyHolcombe, the 2010-11 team MVP and seniorKatharine Ernst, the team’s 2009-10 team MVP. Inaddion, sophomore Erin Bleyl, owner of five schoolrecords, returns aer one of the most successfulfreshman campaigns in school history.

The Falcons are coming off a solid 2010-11 sea-son that saw three individual school records and fourschool relay records set. In addion, 17 swims at theconference championships cracked the school’s top10 list. The Falcons were strong in the classroom aswell, placing nine athletes on the Academic All-Con-ference list.

“We are extremely excited to get going with the2011-12 season,” Converse said. “With the ability totrain in our newly refurbished pool and with our in-tense land-training, our team much further along thanwe were at the same me last year.”

Aer having to train in mulple venues lastyear--including the water polo pool and the USAFAcommunity center pool--the Falcons return to a re-furbished state-of-the-art Cadet Natatorium. Thenew natatorium features an Olympic sized pool withthe ability to convert from long-course to short-course distances. The diving well has also been re-done, with all new 1m, 3m and plaorm well.

“With the newly refurbished Natatorium, wehave been able to train and work on some detailed

technique much earlier than last season,”Converse said. “We’ve been able to sharpenup some lile things a lot quicker and thathas been a significant advantage in our de-velopment so far this preseason.”

Air Force will have a strong group ofleaders with their six seniors, one of thelargest the Falcons have had in several years.Team captain and 2009-10 team MVPKatharine Ernst leads the way as a confer-ence finalist in the buerfly events as well ascompeng in the medley events.

Cassie Fletcher leads the sprint freegroup with Alison Ceranksi and Lauren Delaney pro-viding added depth. Julie Grabarek has connued toshow improvement and looks to break out in the dis-tance free events for AFA. Elvira Chiccarelli roundsout the seniors and will swim the fly and backstrokeevents for the Falcons.

“This is one of our biggest senior groups in re-cent memory,” Converse said. “They’ve all been con-sistent contributors since their freshman year. Wehave a bunch of great leaders with this group.”

The junior class is led by team MVP Haley Hol-combe. Holcombe was an All-Mountain West selec-on in the 100 and 200 buerfly events, seng aschool record in the 200 fly. Rosie Mayou posted aschool top 10 mark in the 100 breast a season ago andwill be called upon to contribute in the breaststrokeevents. Lauren McGuire and Alexandra Trobe willboth provide added depth in the freestyle events.Heather Ireland returns to the team aer taking ayear off and has swam the backstroke events verywell so far in preseason workouts.

“The junior class is coming along well and de-veloping into strong leaders for us. Haley has had astrong offseason, geng to swim this summer, andHeather has been swimming extremely well for us inpreseason workouts.”

The sophomore class is coming off a strongfreshman season, featuring many of its top swimmersin several events. Erin Bleyl set school records in boththe 100 and 200 backstroke events and was part ofthree record-seng relay events. Fellow classmateSamantha Laughlin will also bolster an already strong

backstroke group and will look to moveup the Academy Top 10 list in both backevents. Gabby Aranda cracked theAcademy Top 10 in the 200 medley andboth buerfly events and looks poisedfor improvement. Hannah Cesare wasone of Air Force’s top sprint freestylersand looks to improve upon a solid fresh-man season. Michelle Kuyper was AirForce’s lone swimmer in the 1650 freeat conference and will swim the dis-tance free events for the Falcons. LizHarrison and Elizabeth Keenan will be

called upon to add depth to the freestyle and medleyevents.

“Our sophomore class is probably our strongestgroup of swimmers,” Converse said. “Erin is comingof a phenomenal freshman year and she connues toshow improvement. Samantha is coming into formaer struggling with some health issues late last yearand Gabby Connues to improve for us. Hannah hasa chance to climb up our freestyle charts and we ex-pect improvement out of Michelle, Liz and Elizabeth.”

Air Force features another strong freshmanclass, building upon the talented rookie class from lastyear. Kim Davis has been a standout in the medleyand breaststroke events so far in preseason workouts.Converse envisions Davis having the talent to chal-lenge several school records in the medley, breast andmedley relay events. Laura Haggerty and Noel Nic-cum, coupled with Davis, will provide the Falcons withdepth at the breaststroke events that hasn’t beenseen at the Academy in several years.

“We’ve been extremely thin at breaststroke forseveral years now, but this group of freshmen will im-mediately contribute and post strong swims for us,”Converse said.

Clara Heffernan has had some strong swims thispreseason for the Falcons in the mid-distance freeevents. Sara Brooks will provide depth in the back-stroke events and Janelle Galang will swim the flyevents.

“Our freshmen are a talented bunch,” Conversesaid. They will add some much needed depth in sev-eral events and contribute immediately. Assistantcoach Carrie Renter has done a fantasc job of bring-ing in solid recruing classes these last couple ofyears.”

Air Force features five divers this season, aerhaving just two divers last year. SophomoresMoranda Hern and Rachel Kennedy return aerstrong freshman campaigns. They will be joined byfreshmen Lainie Long, Jeanne Nolan and SamanthaWilson.

“Diving coach Stan Curnow has added somedepth to our diving squad and we expect them to bestronger for us this year,” Converse said.HALEY HOLCOMBEHALEY HOLCOMBE

PHILOSOPHYAir Force women swimmers train in specialty groups as the season progresses. A typical practice in the early season might range from6,000 to 8,000 yards. As the season progresses, volumes will remain constant or even decrease as intensity increases. Specialtygroups are arranged by distance and stroke specialty. Power work and dryland training are a large component of AFA swim train-ing.

COMPETITIONS

Dual meets are used as race opportunities and fine-tuning while the main focus of the season is the Mountain West ConferenceChampionship meet in February. Our mid-season focus-meet is the Cougar Classic, hosted by the University of Houston in Novem-ber.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

Each member of the swimming team follows a uniquely designed, periodized weight training and conditioning program tailoredspecifically to meet individual needs and ability.

Coaching Theory: Coach Spence designs team programs based on sport-specificity while enforcing andbuilding the all-around power athlete. In addition to sport specific skills, athletes are trained and taughtto maximize power, strength, balance and coordination, endurance and flexibility.

Capt. Overton Spence - Assistant Swim Coach for Strength & Conditioning

Spence is a 2006 graduate of the Air Force Academy. He was a three-year football letterwinner at theAcademy playing linebacker.

A day in the life of a Cadet-Athlete

2011-12 Air Force Women’s Swimming & Diving 26 GoAirForceFalcons.com

A TYPICAL DAY IN THE LIFE OF C1C ELVIRA CHICCARELLI:

M Day:0630: Beep! My alarm goes off and it’s time to start the day. I put on my uniform, grab my backpack, and head to the pool for morning practice.

0700: Make a splash. Jump in the water and get in some hard sprint work for an houror so. Once a week, we do a co-ed kicking set during this time.

0800: Pump it up! Head to the weight room for a morning lift with our weight coach.

0900: Air Force, Get Some (Breakfast)! End the workout with a team cheer, hit theshowers, get dressed, and grab a quick breakfast in the locker room.

0930: Leave the gym and head up the Hill to my first class of the day.

0950: Physics class. We do several labs with electricity and magnetism in this toughrequired class. Don’t fall asleep, or my teacher will shock you with a generator!

1050: Extra Instruction (EI). There are lots of opportunities for an academic boosthere, so I make the most of my free time. Today, for example, I’m getting ahead byhoning my skills on the Biology Department’s microscopes.

1150-1320: Lunch! Head over to the swim team’s tables to eat together. Some days we march in to Mitch’s, showing off our mili-tary skills. Other times, we have meetings or briefings about honor, professional military affairs, or events at the Academy after thenoon meal. On the off chance we have some free time, it’s fun to hang out with friends, work in the library, or catch up on Face-book.

1330: Military Strategic Studies class. This is definitely one of my favorites. We study pastand present military theories and apply them in different contexts. There’s lots of discus-sion and war stories.

1423: School’s out! Go back to my room for a quick nap before afternoon practice.

1510: Head to the pool! It’s time for the second practice of the day.

1530: Dive into afternoon practice. We spend some time in specialty distance and strokegroups, and sometimes we’re all swimming the same tough set.

1550: Finish practice, warm down, and do some cords. Coaches and teammates are usu-ally willing to do quick technique work right about now.

1810: Dinnertime! We get dressed and head to the dining hall as a team. The best part? Frozen yogurt!

1910: Military call to quarters begins. I join my squadron for military train-ing, which can include freshman knowledge bowls, training sessions, orbriefings.

1940: The homework begins! This time is specifically set aside as academiccall to quarters. I work hard so I can get into bed, but there’s always time forstudy breaks. Facebook, phone time, socializing, music, Cadet clubs, and e-mail all compete for my attention!

2230: Put everything away, get my uniform ready for tomorrow, and getready for bed.

2245: Taps plays, telling me it’s the best part of the day- bedtime!

Air Force Careers

2011-12 Air Force Women’s Swimming & Diving 27 GoAirForceFalcons.com

“I think being an intercollegiate athlete prepared me a lot for being afighter pilot,” said May. “The first reason is discipline...No, I didn’t al-ways want to go [to all of the workouts], but I was disciplined to getup and just do it. That has a lot of relation to what we do in the mili-tary. It isn’t always fun, but it’s something you commit yourself todoing. Also, that competitive spirit is ingrained. I needed that to getinto pilot training, then to stay in pilot training and compete for afighter. Finally, you learn how to handle stress. That feeling that I hadon night one of the war with the adrenaline pumping was very simi-lar to the feeling you get prior to swimming a big race.”

A bachelor’s degree from the Air Force Academy can open up the doors to a variety of career fields. Featured here are afew of the many careers that former Air Force swimmers have embarked upon following their graduation:

FLYING

Maj. Melissa May (Hyland) [pictured with husband Maj. MichaelMay] was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for a mission flownin Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since graduating from the Academy,May has flown T-37s, T-38s, AT-38s and F-16s. May is currently anAOC (Air Officer Commanding) in cadet squadron 21 and serves asone of the swimming team’s officer representatives.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

1st Lt. Ginny Trimble (Miller) currently works in the Sensors Directorate of AFRL (Air Force Re-search Laboratory) at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. There she works with a team developing elec-tron devices for future generation electronics.

“We mostly fabricate, investigate and test transistors and switches inside our fantastic Class 100clean room,” said Trimble. “These devices are part of efforts to develop the technology of elec-tronic components so that 15-20 years down the road, we can have more efficient electronic sys-tems that operate at higher frequencies and/or with more power. It's like working on manydifferent science experiments that actually have a valuable result. I really enjoy it...there is a com-pletely different world under a microscope, and I am excited to be a part of it.”

“While here at Wright-Patt, I have run into so many different swimmers! I enjoy volunteering asone of the coaches for our masters team here (headed by Cody Rasmussen) and have great funwith other Academy kids that have been this way, some swimmers before me, others into waterpolo, some folks who enjoy the sport, or others who are just starting out...Swimming has allowedme to make so many friends here on our team, and is going to be what I miss the most when Imove. I still talk to a few of my teammates on a semi-regular basis, and they tell me the cool stuffthey are up to these days. It is nice to have those bonds across the whole Air Force though, becauseyou know you are practically guaranteed a friend wherever you go.”

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

“I use everything that I learned as a cadet from the classroom, squadron and pool to lead repair teams,” said White. “Not only doesthe Academy prepare you for success, but also, you create lifetimefriends from the unique experiences we had together.“

1st Lt. Lauren White, a 2007 graduate, is currently stationed at HillAFB, Utah. A mechanical engineering major, White has worked onengineering projects for the A-10, F-16 and T-38 planes. Picturedabove is the wing of an F-16 in the Wing Shop at Hill AFB.

The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year pro-gram of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers ofcharacter, motivated to lead the United States Air Force inservice to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelorof science degree and a commission as a second lieutenantin the Air Force.

COURSE OF STUDYCadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that pro-

vides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential toa career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience isintegrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired out-comes in every graduate.

The core academic curriculum includes courses in basicsciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities.Cadets take additional elective courses to complete re-quirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadetscomplete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the socialsciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civilengineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering me-chanics.

FACULTY COMPOSITIONThe majority of the Academy's faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air

Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who haveestablished outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at leasta master's degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal de-grees in their field of study.

About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of discipli-nary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and continuity.

Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part oftheir officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in thenation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row.

To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has severaldistinguished visiting professors and endowed professors who serve one or moreyears. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are alsomembers of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also sharetheir expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

ATHLETIC PROGRAMThe Academy's athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach

athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academyoffers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and in-tercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three differentphysical education courses each year.

MILITARY EDUCATION AND TRAININGAn air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadettraining and continues throughout the four years. Seniorsare responsible for the organizational leadership of thecadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to developteam and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills.Cadets are projected into as many active leadership rolesas possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force offi-cers.Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- areemphasized the first summer during basic cadet training.Freshmen then study the military role in United States so-ciety as well as the mission and organization of the AirForce. Sophomores receive instruction in communicationskills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects

of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting,

building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraftwith the Cadet Flying Team.

Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to completetwo training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All newcadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer.

Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets' sec-ond summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options suchas working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborneparachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training.

During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as su-pervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above.

Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few ofthe programs available.

NOMINATIONSNominations to the Academy may be obtained through a congressional spon-

sor or by meeting eligibility criteria in other categories of competition establishedby law. For information on admission procedures, write to HQ USAFA/RRS; 2304Cadet Drive, Suite 200; USAF Academy, CO 80840-5025 or go to www.usafa.edu.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY

In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needsof the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service acade-mies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay.

In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, Pres-ident Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commis-sion narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs,Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property.

In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficientlycompleted for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million.

Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

Director of Athletics

2011-12 Air Force Women’s Swimming & Diving 38 GoAirForceFalcons.com

Dr. Hans J.Mueh is in hiseighth year asthe director ofathletics at theAir Force Acad-emy. A retiredAir Force

brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of facultyfor two years prior to his retirement from activeduty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavilyinvolved in Academy athletics before becomingdirector of athletics. He was the Academy's fac-ulty athletics representative from 1996-2004 andwas a long-time member of the board of direc-tors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Associa-tion.

Since becoming the director of athletics,Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkablefeats. In 2007, the Academy was one of onlythree schools (Michigan State and Boston Col-lege) to reach post-season play in football (2007),men’s basketball and ice hockey (2006-07). Itmarked the first time a service academy has everhad a team compete in the post-season in allthree sports.

In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’sbasketball team has played in another NCAAtournament and the National Invitational Tour-nament’s Final Four. The ice hockey team haswon the conference championship and advancedto the NCAA tournament four of the last fiveyears. Mueh was on the selection committee thathired current head coach Frank Serratore and ledthe Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey As-sociation.

The football program, the Academy’s flagshipsport, has gone through a major overhaul underMueh. He led the transition from the retirementof the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years atthe helm to hiring current head coach Troy Cal-houn, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s im-pact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4overall mark and a second-place finish in theMountain West Conference in 2007. The Falconsqualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. Theprogram then posted back-to-back eight-win sea-sons and was 9-4 last year while qualifying forbowl games every year. The school has averaged9,000 bowl tickets sold during the four-year run.

Mueh has been just as successful behind thescenes with the administration of the depart-ment. Mueh restructured the department withan internal/external model that has streamlinedresources and made the department more effec-tive from top to bottom. In addition, he has thedepartment on course to become a federallychartered non-profit organization which will leadto more fund-raising opportunities.

Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endow-

ment and the announcement of the Holaday Ath-letic Center, an indoor training facility. The $15million facility was completed in July 2011.

Mueh has also been active within the confer-ence and the NCAA. He was recently selected tobe part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabi-net and has been active on the NCAA’s academ-ics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golfcommittee and the region 7 postgraduate schol-arship committee. Mueh has been equally activewithin the conference on various leadership com-mittees. He is currently on the awards and recog-nition committee and has previously served onthe joint council executive committee, and com-mittees on championships, television and sports-manship.

Before assuming his duties as vice dean at theAcademy, Mueh was permanent professor andhead of the department of chemistry at the Acad-emy, a position he held since October 1987where he oversaw the annual design and in-struction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500cadets annually.

Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Ger-many, and emigrated to the United States in1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as amember of the Academy's eighth graduatingclass, and graduated with a bachelor of sciencedegree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Acad-emy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soc-cer as a goalie. He still holds the Academyrecord for saves in a game with 30, accomplishingit twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Bene-dictine. In his junior and senior years, Muehhelped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Inter-collegiate Soccer League championship and quar-terfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He wasa first-team all-league selection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed twoassignments in intelligence before attending theUniversity of Wisconsin where he earned his mas-ter's degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned

a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsinin 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has alsocompleted Squadron Officer School, Air Com-mand and Staff College and Air War College.

Between earning the two degrees, Mueh re-turned to the Academy as an instructor in the de-partment of chemistry from 1970-72. He alsoserved as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Den-ver during those two years, leading theInternationals to the Colorado state title in 1971.He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and servedas an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic ofVietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand,in 1972 and 1973.

After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh re-turned to the Academy in 1976 as an associateprofessor of chemistry. He remained at the Acad-emy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the specialassistant for technical matters at the Defense In-telligence Agency at the Pentagon.

In 1986, he assumed the position of actinghead, department of chemistry, before being se-lected for his position of permanent professorand head of the department of chemistry in 1987.As faculty athletics representative, he was activein both the Western Athletic Conference andMountain West Conference, and was the Acad-emy's representative on the transition team toform the new MWC, the only faculty athleticsrepresentative on the team. He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has pro-moted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sportsthroughout his tenure, beginning with work aschairman of the hockey eligibility committee, of-ficer representative to the men's golf team andfive years as the officer representative to thefootball team.

Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax ofCincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kris-tine, Kurt and Deborah.

Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the AirForce Academy's.

The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning ofall cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach lead-ership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three sub-divisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals andphysical education.

The intercollegiate program has 17 men's and 10 women's NCAA-sanctionedteams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are foot-ball, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, in-door and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, waterpolo and wrestling. The Academy fields women's teams in basketball, cross-coun-try, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAAprograms; boxing and cheerleading.

The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at theNCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete inthis conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, SanDiego State, TCU, UNLV and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-con-ference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams.

The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons havewon the trophy 17 times, which is more than any other academy. The winner ofthe annual rivalry visits the White House to have the trophy presented by thePresident of the United States.

The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in thecountry. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three foot-ball fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketballarena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a com-bined seating capacity of more than 9,000.

Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470,while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions.

The department’s newest facility, the Holaday Athletic Center (pictured left),was completed in July 2011.
