“I remember a professor I once had incollege tell us about being a ‘professional’,and that in your 40 year career you can doone thing, 40 times over, or have 40 greatandnewexperiencesoverthatsametime”saysUConnheadswimminganddivingcoachBobGoldberg. “I have always tried to rememberthatphilosophyandhaveitguidemethroughmyyearsofcoaching. Ineachandeveryyear
atUConnastheheadcoachoftheHuskies,Ihaveremindedmyselfofthatapproachandrespectedit.WhilecertainlytherearemanythingsthatIknowwork,andoutofnecessitywe‘recycle’thosesuccessfulideasandthings,IhopeIcanalwaysaddanewwrinkletotheweekandtotheyear,andbydoingthatkeeptheteam,andmyself,freshandexcited!”
UniversityofConnecticutheadmen’sandwomen’sswimminganddiv-ingcoachBobGoldbergisenteringhis23rdseasonwiththeHuskies,andlastseasonsurpassedthe300winmarkinhistimeatUConnwitharecordof5-2forthemenand6-2forthewomen.
The team also had additional good showings at the Terrapin Cup inNovember and the Rutgers Diving Invitational in December and the BIGEASTConferencemeetinFebruary.
Inadditionboth themen’s andwomen’sprogramwere recognizedbytheCollegeSwimmingCoachesAssociationasAcademicAllAmericaTeamsbasedontheiroverallteamgradepointaverage.
In fact, thewomen’snearly3.4 teamGPAwasoneof thebest in thewomen’sprogramhistory.Goldbergisquicktopointoutthatcreditfortheteam’s successes comes from ahardworking staff of coaches in thepool, agreatacademicsupportprogramheadedbyswimming’s longtimeacademicadvisor John Miceli and quality training room and weight room personnelandsupport.
But, as coachGoldberg comments, “Finding success atUConn is nothard todobecauseweare fortunate tohave suchagreatgroupof student-athletesinourprogram!”
Goldberg’sphilosophyhasalwaysbeenonethatstressesconsistencyasamainingredienttowardsachievingpersonalandteamgoalsandfindingsuc-cessinthesport.
Asitissooftensaid,lifeisamarathonnotasprint…andthatisthephi-losophythattheUConnprogramisbuilton.Goldbergfeelsitissoimportanttotrainhardandtrainconsistentlyeveryday.
“Weseldomtakeextradaysoffandwemaintainavisionofseasonlonggoals,” saysGoldberg. “We trynot toget too emotionalover aparticularlygooddayorbadday.Itrytoimparttheideatotheteamthatitistheir‘totalbodyofwork’overaweek,amonth,a seasonandacareer that is farmoreimpactfulthananyonedayoranyonerace.Wewanttobegoodtoday,butwealsowanttobegoodforalongtimetocome…andbeinggoodoveralongperiodoftimeisthedefinitionofconsistency.”
ThatapproachhasallowedUConnswimminganddiving,boththemenand women, to post only one losing season under Goldberg, and that washisveryfirstoneinStorrswhenhetookovertheprograminOctober1988.
Since then, theHuskieshavebeen consistentwinners, swimmershavebeenupdating and improving the school recordboard every year, the teamhasbeenfindingsuccessintheconferencechampionshipsandhasbeensuc-cessfulinsendingswimmerstonationallevelmeetsincludingtheUSOpen,USSeniorNationalsandNCAA’saswellasvariousinternationalmeetswhereUConnswimmershaverepresentedtheHuskies.
Recently theHuskieshavebeen represented at theCanadianNationalChampionships(AlexDavidson,KarimZayed,KyungsooYoon,KimFleming,CourtneyGregorianandJonWong), IsraeliNationalChampionships (Ofri
Brenner), Irish National Championships (Barry Hoey), Polish NationalChampionships (Tomasz Sobek), Australian National Championships(TristanJones,BobbyFolan)andtheWorldSwimmingChampionships(JonWong)asasampleofthemeetsthathavehadUConnswimmersparticipate.
Goldberg’ssuccesswithcollegeathletesgoesbacktothe1970’s,buthisreflectionsonhissuccessesaredifferentthanmost.
“Ihavebeenblessedinmycareerbyworkingatgreatschoolsthatattractaveryhighqualitystudent-athlete,”saysGoldberg.“WhenIthinkofmymostsuccessfulathletes,Ithinkofswimmersanddiverswhohadallthequalitiesofsuccessinstilledinthemlongbeforetheycametocollegeanditwasclearlyobviousintherecruitingprocess.Iwasthefortunateonewhowasabletoben-efitasacoachfromtheirnaturaltalentandtheirgreatupbringing.TwotimeOlympicBronzeMedalistMaryEllenClark,forexample,hadallthetoolstobegreatandIwasthefortunateonewhogottowatchhergrow.Thesameistrueforsomanyhere,andattheriskof leavingoutafewthatshouldbementioned,theyincluderecentUConnswimmerslikeAdrianAstiz,HilliaryKrug,BarryHoey,RyanSmith,CourtneyHaney,TristanJones,KateLarsonandotherswhohadthosesametraits,thedriveanddesiretobegood.AgainthisyearatUConn,wehavesomanyswimmerslikeCaitlinGallagher,AlexDavidson,JordanBowen,MaryDeMarraisandKarimZayedwhounderstandthat it takeswork tobegoodandarewilling todo thatworkbecause theywanttobegood.”
Goldberg’s career began at Arlington (Mass) High School, continuedwithfifteenyearscoachingandteachingatPennState,threeyearsinadmin-istrationatNorthCarolinaStateand the last22years coachingatUConn.“GrowingupinNewEnglandandcomingbacktoUConnwhereIremembercompetingwhenIwasincollegehasfeltlikecominghome.”
Goldberg is a graduate of Springfield College where he was fortunatetobementoredbyoneofthemostrespectedcoachesinthecountryatthattimeinCharlesSilvia.“CoachSilviabasedhiscoachingonanunderstandingofsoundscientificprinciplesandpassedalongthosethoughtsandideastosomanyofuswhowantedtobecoaches.Heprepareduswellbybeingsureascoachesweunderstoodthedifferencebetweenfadandfancy,factandfiction.”
A native of Watertown, Mass., Goldberg and his wife Alyce live inMansfield,Conn.Theyhavethreechildren,DavidandhisfamilywholiveinAustin,Texas,ScottandhisfamilywholiveinCincinnati,andSarahandherfamilywholiveinSouthWindsor,Conn.

Nowenteringhis13thseasondirectingtheUConndivingprogramin2010-2011,JohnBransfieldiscomingoffyetanothersuccessfulseasonontheboards.Bransfieldcoached graduated senior Steven Ferreira, who won theNCAAZonethreemeterdivingchampionshipandtookplace in the NCAA National Championship. FerreirabecamethefirstmemberoftheUConnmen’sswimmingand diving program to compete at the national NCAAmeet. Along with Ferreira, UConn divers had a terrific
championshiprunlastseason. EverydiverscoredattheBIGEASTChampionship,and five made the finals. Ferreira and freshman Danielle Cecco made the All-BIGEASTteamfinishinginthirdplace.CeccowasalsointhetopsixonbothboardsattheNCAAZoneMeet.
In2008-09,Bransfield coachedLizaMarianni to an appearance inher fourthNCAAZoneDivingChampionshipandathirdAll-BIGEASTSelection.
Developingchampionsisnotsomethingnewtothe2006BIGEASTWomen’sDivingCoachoftheYear.Inhis34yearsofcoaching,Bransfieldhashadmanyconfer-encechampionsandatleastoneconferencechampionateachandeveryschoolthathehasworkedat, includingArmy,Maine,SpringfieldCollegeandNorthernMichigan.He has coached several national qualifiers including a four-time NCAA Division II
Champion.In2003,MelissaKullbecamethefirstConnecticutdivertocompeteattheNCAANationalChampionship.
Thisyear’sdiversareledonthemen’ssidebythreediverswhocompetedattheNCAAZoneRegionalslastyearwithBradSchott,GrantFecteauandAdamGenuario.ThewomendiverswillbeyoungandledbyNCAAZonefinalistDanielleCecco.
Bransfield’s background extends beyond the collegiate realm of diving. HeenjoyedmanyyearsofsuccesswithU.S.DivingasaJuniorOlympiccoach,andwastherecipientofastipendin1988toworkwithtwoU.SOlympicCoaches.In1992,Bransfieldwas appointed as aRegionalTechnicalDirectorofUnitedStatesDiving,andwhileatWestPoint,hostednumerousclinicsforU.SDivingCoaches.In1998heservedastheCompetitionManageroftheGoodwillGamesinNewYork.BransfieldhastaughtnumerouscoachingclinicsforGrassRootsfundamentals,SpottingTrainingandSafetyCertificationandhecurrentlyservesontheNCAADivingRulesSubcommittee.
In the summer of 2003, Bransfield spent close to three weeks in the People’sRepublicofChina.Theopportunityallowedhimtocloselyobservethetrainingpro-gramsattwoProvincialsitesandattendtheAsianJuniorChampionships.
BransfieldisanativeofBrooklyn,N.Y.,wherehereceivedhisbachelor’sdegreefromSt.FrancisCollege.Heearnedamaster’satNorthernMichiganUniversityandcontinuedtostudybiomechanicswhileatSpringfieldCollege.Bransfieldandhiswife,Ginny,havefoursons,andpresentlyresideinStorrs.

JanelleAtkinsonWignall is inherfirst year as anassistantcoachatUConnin2010-11afterspendingthepreviousfourseasonsatWrightState.
The1999-2000NationalHighSchoolSwimmeroftheYear,AtkinsonWignallearned10All-Americahon-orswhilecompetingattheUniversityofFlorida.Shealsoreceived three First Team All-Southeastern Conference
accoladesandhadthreetop-threefinishesinthreeyearsattheNCAAChampionships.AtkinsonWignallwaspartofthreeSECchampionshipsandwasontheSECAcademicHonorRollfourtimes.
A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Atkinson Wignall finished fourth in the 400freestyleatthe2000OlympicsinSydney,Australia,placingninthinthe800freestyleaswell, and competed in the2004games inAthens,Greece. In2002, the JamaicanativewonapairofbronzemedalsattheCommonwealthGamesheldinManchester,England.Shereachedthepodiuminboththe400and800freestyleevents.
In 2001, Atkinson Wignall claimed a silver medal in the 800 freestyle and abronzemedalinthe400freestyleeventattheGoodwillGamesinBrisbane,Australia.She was a triple silver medalist at the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg,Canada,andtookpartinthe2003gamesinSantoDomingo,DominicanRepublic.Shewasalsoaseven-timerecipientoftheJamaicanSwimmer-of-the-Yearawardandasix-timenomineefortheJamaicanSportswomanoftheYear.
BeforecomingtoWrightStateinAugust2006,AtkinsonWignallworkedayearasacommunityrelationsofficerfortheJamaicaInformationServicesinWashington,D.C.,andwasanassistantcoachatWesternKentuckyUniversitybeforethat.Ontheinternationalscene,AtkinsonWignallwasselectedastheheadcoachfortheJamaicanNationalTeamatthe2009SwimmingWorldChampionshipsinRome,Italy.
AtkinsonWignallearnedabachelor’sdegreeintourismandhospitalitymanage-mentfromFloridain2005.
tyson hurstAssistant Coach
TysonHurst,a2005graduateofOregonStatewhomostrecentlyservedasanassistantcoachatIndianaforthepastseason,isinhisfirstseasonasanassistantmen’sandwomen’sswimmingcoachatUConnin2010-11.
At Indiana, Hurst was involved in a number ofareas in the program, such as efficiency in technique,developingdailyworkoutsandimplementingprogressivepower-trainingregimens.
Hurst also worked in Member Services at theCampusRecreationalSportsOfficeatIndiana.
HurstwasacoachfortheCascadeAquaticSwimClubinRedmond,Ore.,from2007to2009andwastheswimmingcoachatRedmondHighSchoolfrom2006to2009.HegraduatedfromOregonStatewithadegreeinmusicin2005andearnedamaster’sinmusiceducationin2006.WhileatOregonState,hecoachedteamsonthenovice,agegroupandseniorlevel.
John hoganAssistant Coach
FormerUniversity ofConnecticut swimmer JohnHogan is in his first year as a member of the Huskycoachingstaff.Originally,awalk-onatUConn,Hogannowholdstheschoolrecordinthe500-yardfreestyleandalso holds the second-best school time in the 200-yardfreestyle. He qualified for the BIG EAST ConferenceChampionshipinallfourofhisyearsatUConnandwasalsoaU.S.Openqualifier.
A team captain in 2009-10, Hogan was a three-timeBIGEASTAcademicAll-Star.AnativeofWalkersville,Md.,Hogangraduatedwithadegreeinresourceeconomics.
Cynthia DumaineAssistant Diving Coach
A native of Southern California, 2010-2011 isCynthiaDumaine’ssecondseasonasanassistantdivingcoach at UConn. She was a nine-year member of thedivingteamatLosCoyotesCountryClubandwasahighschoolconferencechampionatBuenaParkHighSchool.
A graduate of California-Fullerton, she and herhusband Mike have four grown children and reside inEast Windsor, Conn. Her brother, Jeff Huber, is thelong-timeheaddivingcoachatIndiana.

The 2010-11 version of the University of Connecticut men’s swimming anddivingteamisonethatheadcoachBobGoldberghasbeenwaitingforalongtime.
There have been some great individual swimmers and some really goodteamsthathavecomethroughtheWolff-ZackinNatatoriumdoorsatUConn,butGoldbergfeelsthiscouldbeoneofthebest.
“Thisteamisnotrelyingonanyonepersonandthatiswhatcouldmakethisteam so special,” says Goldberg. “We have talent from top to bottom, and whileperhaps we don’t have a potential record holder in every event, we can challengeourrecords in justaboutanyevent.WhenI lookatour lineupI seenoholes,noweaknessesandnoliabilities.Ofcourse,thatinfersthateveryonehastodotheirjobintheirevents,performuptoexpectationsandstayhealthy,butIthinkthisgroupwantstodojustthat!”
TherearelossestograduationthattheHuskiesmustmakeupfor.Atthediv-ingend,abiglosscomesfromthegraduationofNCAAqualifierSteveFerreira.AlsogoneisWorldSwimmingChampionshipcompetitorJonWongandUConnClubOutstandingSeniorAthleteJohnHogan.AlsomissingwillbeprovenrelaystarBillMaginandbreaststroker–IM’erSteveKustra.

“AlexhashissightssetontheNCAAqualifyingmarkof1:44forthe200-yardbackstroke, andwhile verydifficult to achieve, Ibelievehe cango that fast,” saysGoldberg.
Equally hard working is fellow co-captain Tim Krompinger (New Fairfield,Conn.). “There are times I have to hold Tim back in his training so he can restenoughformeets,”saysGoldberg.
The third member of this class is Tomasz Sobek (Siemianowice Slaskie,Poland), a gifted breaststroker who has yet to reach his potential despite owningUConnrecords.NCAAtimesarewithinSobek’sreach.

NickMajtenyi(St.Catherines,Ont.)hasevolvedintooneofthemostaccom-plished swimmerson the team in freestyle andflyandhas the added influenceof

The other studygroup leader isMattConnor (Venetia,Pa.),whosebestevent is the400IMwithstrongbreaststrokeevents.MitchDansky(Winchendon,Mass.)isthethirdmemberoftheclasswithskillinmid-distanceanddistancefreestylealongwithgoodbutterflyandbackstrokeskills.Thesethreeperformerscancovera lotofeventsandwillbecountedonthisyearandnextfortheirleadershipskills.
ThesophomoresareanintimidatinggroupofswimmerswithabigimpactontheHuskies.Theseeightperformerscancompriseateamoftheirownandastheygo,sowillthefortunesoftheHuskies.
JeremyRamshaw(Mississauga,Ont.)hasunlimitedpotentialforUConnashecanswimabouteverywhereandGoldbergisstillunsurewhathisbesteventmaybe.WithgreatbackstrokeandIM,healsohashadsomeimpressivefreestyletimes.JoeGlowacki(Erie,Pa.)isoneofthebestall-aroundathletesontheteamandisquicklybecomingaforce inthebutterflyandfreeevents.HecouldcertainlystepintotheholeleftbyMaginontherelays.
SeanCook(Doylestown,Pa.)isanotherversatileswimmerwhowillcontinuetoimproveinthebackstroke,butneedstogiveequaltimetohisfreestyle.KyungsooYoon (Toronto, Ont.) can do everything – sprint, swim mid-distance free and isstronginseveralstrokes–andhasstrongpotentialinallofthem.
“Kyungsoo can certainly qualify for the NCAAs with the right race,” saysGoldberg.
ThefinalthreemembersofthisclasshavenotyetswumfortheHuskiesdespitebeing sophomoresand thatmakesGoldbergveryexcited.NickCerra (NewHydePark,N.Y.)fracturedhiswristearlylastyearandhadtodorehabilitationallseason.HeisaqualitybutterflierandIMer.JensPeterTraffisatransferfromDenmark.Hisfreestyle,breaststrokeandbackstrokeareallgreat.ThecoachingstaffhaswaitedforKarimZayed(Montreal,Que.)toracefortheHuskiesforoverayearashedidnotcompetelastseason.
The freshmen are an unusually large group for the Huskies, but are full oftalentedswimmers.
AsherGarcia(Pinecrest,Fla.)willbeheardfrominseveraleventswhileKeithPiper (Naperville, Ill.) is only a few weight room workouts away from becomingan outstanding backstroker. Sean Battle (Allison Park, Pa.) has some great highschool times and will play a role, as will distance freestyler Zach Coleman (LakeRonkonkoma,N.Y.).BenYacano (GlenAllen,Va.)had a great Juniors last sum-mer and has an impressive butterfly. Adam McNally (Leominster, Mass.) is from
neighboring Massachusetts and has quality potential inthebreaststroke.
“With new coaches, a challenging and difficultschedule and a talented team, there is a lot of energyandoptimismaroundtheteamandpoolthisyear,”saysGoldberg.“IfeelthatTysonHurstandJanelleAtkinsonWignall are great assistant coaches and UConn recordholder JohnHoganwill be an invaluable coaching assetsince he ‘knows the ropes’ so well and has a very highswimmingIQ.

TheUniversityofConnecticutwomen’sswimminganddivingteamfor2010-11lookstobearepeatofthesamehighqualityswimmersoftheteamsthattheHuskieshavebeenblessedwithinrecentyears.
Head coach Bob Goldberg has been able to maintain a consistent flow ofswimmerswhohavetheskillsandthegoalsofcompetingattheirhighestlevel.Theteam has had the work ethic and motivation to work towards constant personalimprovementandwomenhavethepridetorepresenttheHuskiesinthebestman-nerpossible.
WithsomanyswimmersatUConnonthesamepage,itisnowonderthatthewomenmaintainsuchahighlevelofperformance.GoldbergproudlyreinforcesthefactthattheyhaveproducedahighlevelofperformancebothinthepoolaswellasintheclassroomundertheguidanceofacademicadvisorJohnMiceli.
LeadingthegroupofHuskiesthisyeararethreemembersoftheseniorclass.Co-captainKateBaust(Reistertown,Md.)hasbeenatopperformerfortheHuskiesineachofherfirstthreeseasons.SheisagiftedbreaststrokerwhocanswimintheIMeventsandisalsoverygoodinthesprintfreestyle.Shehasclearlysteppedupasaswimmerandasaleaderbeingelectedasateamcaptain.
Herfellowco-captainisSophieStaskiewicz(Riverdale,N.Y.),whocanswiminsomanyeventsincludingallthefreestyleeventsandbothbutterflies.StaskiewiczisalsoarolemodelinallphasesoftrainingassheisaveryaccomplishedperformerintheHuskiesdrylandprogramaswell.EmilyLuchansky(Shelton,Conn.)isthethirdmemberofthisgroupandhasseengoodimprovementinherbackstrokeeventsandwillbecomeafactorthisseasonfortheHuskies.
“Thisseniorclasshasbeenhereforthreeyearsandhasseenalotofverygoodswimming,”saysGoldberg.“Theyknowwhatittakestoexcelandarewillingtoleadthisgroupinthatdirection.”
Thejuniorsareamajorpartofthisteamandcarryalargepartoftherespon-sibility forhowfar this teamwillgo.AliAserlind(CoralGables,Fla.) isaqualitybackstrokerandmid-distancefreestyler,whoshowsagreatdealofdedicationtotheprogrameveryday.Sheisatopstudent,alearninggroupleaderandtalentedswim-mer.Aserlindsetshighstandardsforherselfaswellasthosearoundher.SamanthaCisneros(GardenGrove,Calif.)isanothertopstudentwhoexcelsinallthingsthatshe does. Last year was a good year for Cisneros as her free and IM showed realimprovement.
ErinDeVinney(Avondale,Ariz.)hassethersightsonerasinghersisterKatie’snamefromtherecordboardatUConnisthe200-yardbutterfly--aswellasestab-lishinganewmarkontheDeVinney’ssistersrecordboard.Balancinghercommit-mentasanursingmajorwithacommitmenttoswimminghasbeensomethingthatDeVinneyhasdoneverywellandbeensuccessfulwithatUConn.
One of the emerging stars for the Huskies is Caitlin Gallagher (Lawrence,Kansas).Overthelasttwoyears,shehasshownimprovementinallareasandnowGallagherwillfocusmainlyonbreaststrokinanefforttoadvancetotheNCAAs.
HannahKelly (WestHartford,Conn.)has shownsteadyprogress inherIMevents and should continue to score for the Huskies. Ye Ling (Lake Worth, Fla.)emergedlastyeartosettheschoolrecordinthe50-yardfreestyleandcancontinuetolowerthatmarkashersprintsareneededfortherelays.Thefinalmemberofthisgroup isChelseaPeitz (Fenton,Mich.)whocontinues to improve in thebutterflyeventsandisateamleaderinmanyareasoutsideofthepool.
“These six athletes are great representatives of UConn swimming, UConnathleticsandcollegeswimmingingeneral,”saysGoldberg.“Iamproudofwhattheyhaveaccomplishedintheirtimehereandlookforwardtoseeingthemcontinuetoimproveforthenexttwoyears.”
ThesophomoreclassfortheHuskiesisanotherveryimpressivegroupandwillmakesomenoisethisyearwithoneyear’sexperienceundertheirbelts.
JordanBowen(LakeElmo,Mich.)isoneofthequalityathletesinthisgroupandalotisexpectedfromher.
“Swimminga careerbest4:49 inher500-yard freestylewasnoaccident fromJordanandshecangofasterinthateventandallofherfreestyleevents,”saysGoldberg.
Hardonherheelsareagroupofveryfastswimmersinseveralevents ledbyMaryDeMarrais(Bernardsville,N.J.).
“Mary’sbest swimming isaheadofher in somanywaysandIamhappytobeabletobeheretowatchherimprove.Wejusthavetodecidewhichofhermanyeventsisbestforher,”saysGoldberg.
Another emerging star is Katie Dobler (Pittsford, N.Y.). Coming out of‘nowhere’ontothecollegescene,Doblermadefabulousstrideslastyearandstayedoncampustogetstrongerthissummer.
KimFleming(Mississauga,Ont.)anchoredthebackstrokelastyearandhadaproductivesummerinCanadianswimming.“IexpectgreatthingsfromKiminthebackstrokethisyear,”saysGoldberg.
MaddieFroehlich(Hamden,Conn.)madeagreatcontributionintheIM’slastyearandlookstocontinuetodosothisyear.AnotherkeyswimmerisNicoleFrost(Norco,Calif.),whoswamwelllastyearandisneededinthesprintevents,buthastoreboundfromaninjurylastseason.
Savitri Horrigan (Westport, Conn.) is a quality breaststroker who can be afactorattheBIGEASTConferencemeet.AsurprisefortheHuskieslastyearwasMcGuireKelly(WestHartford,Conn.)inthefreestyleeventsandwithcontinuedimprovementsishopingtobeunder5:00thisyearinher500-yardfreestyle.
AbackstrokerwithsomepotentialisTanyaLama(Hamden,Conn.)whocanimprove toBIGEASTConference standards thisyear.Thefinal twomembersofthisyear’slargeclassareIsabelleNat(Barrie,Ont.),whohasqualitypotentialinthe100-yard and200-yard freestyle, andKate O’Leary (Brookfield,Conn.),who canswimanynumberofeventsincludingfreeandbreaststroke.

IMandbreaststroke,buthasacompetitivefreestyleaswell.KatiKyle(Lithia,Fla.)has a great backstroke and big-time potential in the event with good underwatertechniqueanda strongstroke.CourtneyGregorian(Burlington,Ont.)hasagreatbutterflystrokewithpotentialtogounder2:00inthe200-yardbutterfly.
“Thesearethreeswimmerswhocanmakeanimmediateimpactonourpro-gramattheBIGEASTConferencelevel.EverydayIwatchourwomentrainandIknowwhatourpotentialcanbe,”saysGoldberg“EverydayIalsohearthemtalkabouttheirpersonalandteamgoalsandIamexcitedforthem.Ifwecanputtogethertheirgoalsandtheirpotentialonthesameday,wecanandwillbeaverygoodteam.”
On the diving side, there are a number of talented performers. SophomoreDanielle Cecco (Hicksville, N.Y.) had an outstanding first season as she finishedin third place at the BIG EAST in thethree-meter event to earnAll-Conferencehonors, andmade the consolation roundin the one-meter. At the NCAA Zones,she was fourth in the three-meters andsixthontheone-meter.
Senior Jessica Hovancik (Valatie,N.Y.) was a consolation finalist at theBIG EAST meet as a sophomore, butmissed most of last year with an injury.Shewilllooktoreboundthisyear.JuniorKellyMcCauley (CortlandManor,N.Y.)madetheconsolationfinalsatBIGEASTslast year and will look for continuedimprovement, while sophomore NicoleBorriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) made theconsolationfinalsattheBIGEASTmeetasafreshmanandqualifiedfortheNCAAZonemeet.

The Wolff-Zackin Natatorium is home to the University of Connecticutmen’sandwomen’sswimminganddivingprograms.
The39,000-squarefootnatatoriumprovidesoneofthefinestfacilitiesontheEastCoast.Boththemen’sandwomen’sswimminganddivingteamsaretheonlyvarsityprogramshousedinthefacility.
TheNatatoriumwasbuilt inpartof theuniversity’s$28millionSportsCenterComplex,whichalsoincludesthe171,000-squarefootHarryA.GampelPavilion,hometotheUConnmen’sandwomen’sbasketballandwomen’svol-leyballprograms.
Itfeaturesseveralhigh-techinnovationsmakingthepooloneofthefastestintheregion.Thefacilityisa50-meter“stretchpool”thatincludestwomoveablebulkheads,allowingthepooltoassumeseveraldifferentconfigurations.
The standard collegiate length of 25 yards can be used in an all-deep-water course in theWolff-Zackinpool, featuring eight-footwide lanes and aflow-throughbulkhead.Asecondbulkheadprovidesanenclosedwarm-upandwarm-divingarea,whilealsoallowingforaseparatedivingarea.Thedivingareaincludestwoone-meterboardsandtwothree-meterboardsmountedoncon-crete.Adryboardandtrampolinewithspottingrigs,andoneandthree-meterboardswithrigsoverthetopmakesforexcellenttraining.

Strength anD ConDitioning
The strength and conditioning program for the University ofConnecticut Division of Athletics is under the supervision of UConnStrengthandConditioningCoordinator JerryMartin.TheStrengthandConditioningstaffservicesall24ofConnecticut’sintercollegiateteams. UConn athletes have the use of two different weight rooms in theHarryA.GampelPavilionandthenewlyremodeledHughS.GreerFieldHouse.Inall,thereareover8,000squarefeetofweighttrainingfacilitiesavailableforallUConnswimminganddivingathletes. Theweight roomin theHarryA.GampelPavilion is a freeweightfacility and supplies the Husky athletes areas in which to perform theirpower andOlympic lifts.The facility in the GreerFieldHouse is fittedwithmorefreeweightsinwhichtheUConnathletescanincorporatecir-cuit training,speedtrainingandheavynegativeworkouts intotheir totalstrengthtrainingprogram. Eachprogramismanipulatedinordertofulfillthespecificneedsofthe individual. Specific programs are developed to monitor progress instrength,power, anaerobic conditioningandflexibility.This formatpro-videsthecoachesandmedicalstaffwithanaccurateathleticprofileoneachswimminganddivingathlete.
CoUnSeling Program for interCollegiate athleteS
Establishedin1986,theCounselingProgramfor Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) providescomprehensiveacademicsupporttoallUConnstudent-athletes. Since 1989, John Miceli has served as thecounselorforthemen’sandwomen’sswimming& diving teams. A nationally certified sportscounselorandConnecticut-licensedprofessionalcounselor, John monitors student-athlete aca-demicperformance,counselsindividualsregard-ingmajor/careeroptions, facilitates registrationin courses that accommodate practice timeswhile ensuringprogress toward adegree, coor-dinates tutor support (readily available to allstudent-athletesupontheirrequest),andassists
student-athletes in the development of learning and time managementskills. TheUniversityofConnecticutswimminganddivingteamtakesgreatpride in theacademicand leadershipaccomplishmentsof its teammem-bers. The women’s team consistently has been recognized for academicexcellence by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America(CSCAA). Individually, Lindsay Hansen (2004), and Kydani Dover(2005), were honored with the Kinsman Award (CPIA’s highest awardrecognizingacademicandathleticachievementandimprovement,service,leadership,perseverance,andcharacter). Similarly, the men have captured three of the last seven KinsmanAwards,withCraigOrskiwinningin2003andBobbyFolanin2005andTristanJonesin2007. FolanwasalsoselectedbytheNCAAasthesoleUConnrepresentativetoits2005LeadershipConference.
DePartment of SPortS meDiCine TheDepartmentofSportsMedicineintheUniversityofConnecticutDivisionofAthleticsworksasanintegratedmultidisciplinaryteamwhosepurposeistoprovidetheoptimal,safeenvironmentforallstudent-athletestotrainandparticipateintheirsport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to eachstudent-athlete.Theyaredevotedtopreventinginjury,rapidlydiagnosingandtreatinginjuryandmaximizingathleticperformance.Thedisciplinesofathletictraining,strengthandconditioning,sportsmedicine,orthopedicsportsmedicine,optometry,nutrition,exercisephysiologyandpsychologyworkinconcerttoprovidecomprehensivecare. TheteamisspearheadedbyRobertHoward,MA,ATC,theheadath-letictrainer.CatieDann,ATChandlestheday-to-dayneedsofthemen’sandwomen’sswimminganddivingteamsforthethirdyear. Physician coverage is led by Dr. Jeffrey Anderson, the Directorof Sports Medicine, and Team Physician, Dr. Thomas Trojian. TheOrthopedicSportsMedicineSpecialistsfortheteaminclude:Dr.MichaelJoyce of the Orthopedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Dr. BarryMessinger; and Dr. Robert Arciero and Dr. Augustus Mazzocca of theUniversityofConnecticutHealthCenterDepartmentofOrthopedics inFarmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works closely with theDepartments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the UniversityofConnecticutcampus.Thisaffordsthestudent-athleteswiththeinputofseveralnationallyrecognizedexercisescientists.Thiscooperationalsokeepsthesportsmedicinestaffatthecuttingedgeofdevelopmentsinthefieldsofhumanperformanceandsportsnutrition.Membersofthesportsmedicinestaffareactivelyengaged inresearchthatdirectlybenefits thecareof thefootballstudent-athletes. TheDepartmentofSportsMedicineattheUniversityofConnecticutplaysacriticalroleinassuringthatallUConnstudent-athleteshaveaccesstothebestmedicalsupportandhealthcarepossible.Throughpatientcareandongoingresearchandeducation,thedepartmentcontinuestoprovideHuskyteamsacompetitiveedgefromthemedicalperspective.

TheUniversity ofConnecticutDivisionofAthletics believes thattheresponsibilitiesofstudent-athletesreachbeyondclassrooms,libraries,fieldsandcourts.
CommunityserviceisanintegralpartoftheUConnexperienceasHuskystudent-athletescontributecountlesshourseachyeartoanumberofworthycauses.
Much of this community service is coordinated through theStudent-Athlete Advisory Committee. The men’s and women’s swim-minganddivingprogramsarehighly-involvedintheSAAC.The2003-04SAACpresidentwasKateJelusfromthewomen’steam.The2006-07vice-presidentwasfree-stylerEmilyKarel.
The Committee consists of representatives from each one ofUConn’s intercollegiate athletic teams and in addition to communityservice,itpromotesfellowshipandcamaraderiebetweenstudent-athletesfromdifferentsports.

University of Connecticut President Philip E. Austin led theUniversity of Connecticut through a period of unprecedentedacademic and physical growth. Dr. Austin became the thirteenthPresidentof theUniversityofConnecticut at thebeginningof theacademicyear in the fallof1996andretired fromthatposition inthefallof2007.
HeiscurrentlyservingastheinterimpresidentoftheUniversityofConnecticut.
As the University’s chief executive, Dr. Austin oversaw theimplementationofa$2.8billioninfrastructurerenewalandimprove-ment program, including the $1 billion UCONN 2000 programapprovedbytheStateofConnecticutin1995,the$1.3billion21stCentury UConn program signed into law in 2002 and extendingthrough2015,andadditionalconstructionsupportedbyotherpublicandprivatesources.
Dr. Austin’s commitment to academic excellence led to anincrease in student quality and diversity as UConn has become aschoolofchoiceforhighachievingstudents.

From 1974 to 1977, Dr. Austin served as Deputy AssistantSecretaryforEducationintheU.S.DepartmentofHealth,Educationand Welfare. During the latter part of this assignment, he alsoservedasActingAssistantSecretary forEducation.He servedas anEconomistintheDirector’sOfficeoftheU.S.OfficeofManagementandBudgetfrom1971to1974.
Dr.Austin’s service in theUnitedStatesArmy extended from1969-1971. He wasanEconomistwiththerankofArmyCaptainin the Office of theDeputy Chief of Stafffor Economic Affairsat U. S. MilitaryHeadquarters in

Main Street is the heart and the soul of a community, a place tomeet friends for dinner before the game, to run daily errands, to enjoythe local music scene, or to buy a newspaper to read while sipping yourmorningcoffee. MainStreetisthemagicthatcantransformastreet intoa neighborhood, buildings into a village, or a small town into a regionaldestination.
In 2001, the Town of Mansfield teamed with UConn to form theMansfield Downtown Partnership and set about creating its own “MainStreet”area,StorrsCenter.StorrsCenterwillbeamixed-usetowncenterandmainstreetcorridoratthecrossroadsoftheTownandtheUniversity.LocatedalongStorrsRoad/Route195adjacenttotheUniversity,theTownHall, E.O. Smith High School, and the Mansfield Community Center,StorrsCenterwillincludeatownsquare,pedestrian-orientedstreets,smalllanes,andpublicspaces.Therewillbeavarietyofshops,restaurants,cafés,andresidentialoptions,whichwillattractallagesandinterestsandprovidespacesforthecommunitytogather.
The Mansfield Downtown Partnership and master developerLeylandAlliancehaveworkeddiligentlytomakethevisionofStorrsCentera reality. Some of their recent progress includes the signing of letters ofintentfromseverallocal,regional,andnationalbusinesses;thepreparationoffinalconstructiondocumentsforimprovementstoStorrsRoadandDogLane;andinitiationoftheselectionofadesignerfortheparkinggarageandintermodalcenter.

Diver Steve Ferriera became UConn’s first qualifier at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship.
Toni Stahl helped lead the UConn men’s soccer team to a BIG EAST regular season championship and a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Robert McClain and the Husky football team played in its third-consecutive bowl game and won its second-straight.
Brittany Taylor and the women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of

JeffreyA.HathawayhasprovidedeffectiveleadershipfortheUniversityofConnecticutDivisionofAthleticsasheentershiseighthyearinthatposition.Atthesametime,hehasalsobecomealeaderforcollegeathleticsonboththenationalandconferencelevel.
HehasplayedavitalroleinthesuccessstoryofUConnathleticsfor19ofthepast21yearsashewastheExecutiveAssociateDirectorofAthleticsat the school from1990-2001.Inhisonly twoyears away fromtheStorrscampus,HathawayenjoyedasuccessfultenureastheDirectorofAthleticsatColoradoStateUniversityfrom2001-03.
His first seven years as UConn’s Director of Athletics have arguablybeenthemostsuccessfulinschoolhistory.
The 2009-10 academic year was another successful campaign. Thefootball team played in its third-straight bowl game and won its secondconsecutivewhilethewomen’sbasketballteamwonthenationalchampion-shipwithaperfectrecordforthesecond-straightyear.Inaddition,themen’ssoccer,women’ssoccer,fieldhockey,men’sbasketballandbaseballteamsallqualified forpostseason tournamentplay.UConnwasalso selectedasoneof16regionalhostsfortheNCAAbaseballtournament.Thewomen’s icehockeyteamalsospentmostoftheyearrankedinthetop10ofthecountry.
Hathaway also directed UConn to reach an agreement with IMGCollege,adivisionofIMGWorldwide,duringthe2009-10academicyear.This10-yearathleticsmulti-mediarightspartnershipisworthmorethan$80millioninguaranteedpaymentstotheUniversity.
In 2007-08, UConn successfully completed the NCAA certificationprocess.Theinstitutionwaspreviouslycertified,onceevery10yearsassetforthbytheNCAA,in1998.Hathawayprovidedleadershipforacompre-hensive,year-longselfstudyoftheoperationsintheDivisionofAthletics,asitevisitbyapeerreviewteam,aNCAAcertificationcommittee’sreviewoftheself-studyandareportbythepeerreviewteam.
TheDivisionalso reachednew long-termagreementswith twoof itsmediapartnersinrecentyears–ConnecticutPublicTelevisionforwomen’sbasketballandWTICradioforfootballandmen’sandwomen’sbasketball.
UConnalsocompletedalandmarkten-year,$46millioncorporatepartner-shipagreementwithNike,Inc.toexclusivelyprovidefootwear,apparelandequipmentforHuskyathletics.
In addition to his leadership role at UConn, Hathaway is enteringhis fourth-year of a five-year term on the prestigious NCAA Division IMen’sBasketballCommitteerepresentingtheBIGEASTConference.Asamemberoftheten-personcommittee,HathawaytakespartintheselectionandadministrationoftheNCAAMen’sBasketballChampionshipandtheadministrationoftheCBStelevisioncontract.Hathawaywillserveaschair-manofthatcommitteein2011-12.Heisonlythefourthindividualinthehistory of the BIG EAST Conference to serve on the committee, joiningDaveGavitt,JakeCrouthamelandMikeTranghese.
Hathaway is a member of the Division I-A Athletic DirectorsAssociation Board of Trustees and on the Executive Committee of theNationalAssociationofCollegiateDirectorsofAthletics(NACDA).
Some significantly historic achievements have occurred duringHathaway’s time as Director of Athletics. UConn became the first schooltowintheNCAADivisionImen’sandwomen’sbasketballchampionshipsinthesameyear(2004)andthefootballteamwasvictoriousinitsfirsteverbowlgame-the2004MotorCityBowl.
Private fundraising for UConn athletics continues to provide excep-tionalacademicandathleticopportunitiesforstudent-athletes.
UConnsecuredagiftof$2.5millionfromalumnusMarkShenkmanin 2004 for the building of the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center, anintercollegiateandrecreationalservicesfacilitythatservestheentireuniversitycommunity.
Under Hathaway’s guidance, the Division of Athletics received theUniversity’sEnvironmentalLeadershipAward for theconstructionofTheBurton Family Football Complex and the Mark R. DuringHathaway’scareer,hehasalwaysmadethestudent-athletethetoppriority.
In the spring and fall semesters of the 2009 calendar year, UConn’sstudent-athletesexcelledintheclassroomasnearly50%ofthe650student-athletesachieveda3.0“B-orbetter”semestergradepointaverage.Inaddi-tion, the Division of Athletics has consistently maintained a 99 percentretentionrateamongitsstudent-athletes.
“Myfocusisonthestudent-athlete,”saysHathaway.“That’sthemostimportantpartofourprogram.Ourprimarymissionisthecontinuedaca-demic success of our student-athletes. The challenge is to identify peopleearly in theprocess andassist them inchartinga careerpath. Inaddition,wewant toprovide a quality experience in intercollegiate athletics for ourstudent-athletes.”
TheUniversityofConnecticutwas saluted for its community serviceeffortsbytheNationalConsortiumforAcademicsandSports(NCAS)threetimesunderHathaway’swatchforitscommunityserviceefforts.UConnwasalsohonoredby theNCAS in2006and ’07 for itsefforts toassist formerstudent-athletesinearningtheircollegedegree.
In the 2006-07 academic year, Hathaway served on the Universitysearch committee to hire Vice President/Chief Operating Officer BarryFeldman and Executive Director of the Alumni Association Lisa Lewis.HeiscurrentlyamemberofthesearchcommitteefortheUniversity’snewpresident.
Hathaway’sleadershiphasearnedhimrespectandrecognitionbothonthenationalandlocallevels.
Hewasoneoffourfinalistsforthe“AthleticDirectoroftheYear”inthespringof2008attheinauguralSportsBusinessAwardsbyStreetandSmith’sSportsBusinessJournal.
Inthesummersof2007and‘10,HathawaywashonoredbyNACDAastheAstroTurfAthleticDirectoroftheYearforDivisionI-AintheNortheastregion(whichincludestheNewEnglandstatesandNewYork,Pennsylvania,OhioandNewJersey).
In2004,TheSportingNewsnamedHathawaytoits“Power100List”-comprisedofthe100mostpowerfulpeopleinsports.HereceivedtheJosephJ.FontanaDistinguishedServiceAwardfromtheConnecticutHighSchoolCoachesAssociationinthespringof2005.Inthewinterof2006,Hathawayreceived the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic DirectorAwardfromtheAll-AmericanFootballFoundation.
DuringhistenureatbothColoradoStateandUConn,hewasamember
of the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, as well asthe Postseason Football Licensing Subcommittee, which is responsible forissuesinvolvingpostseasonfootballcompetitionandthecertificationofbowlgames.
On the conference level, Hathaway was the chair of the BIG EASTAthletic Directors Executive Committee through November of 2009. Heis also past chairman of the BIG EAST Championship and CompetitionCommitteeaswellastheleague’sFinanceCommittee.
Hathaway has served as a guest presenter at both the NACDA andNACMA (National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators)conventionsinthepast.Inaddition,hehasalsoservedasalecturerattheIAInstitutesponsoredbytheDivisionI-AAthleticDirectors’Association,heldannuallyinDallas.
Hathaway originally came to Connecticut in November of 1990 asSeniorAssociateAthleticDirector. In that role,heoversaw theday-to-dayoperationsoftheDivisionofAthletics.
He served internally as a program administrator for several sports,includingmen’sandwomen’sbasketballandmen’sandwomen’ssocceratUConnastheHuskieswonfournationalchampionshipsinthosesportsdur-inghistenure-twoinwomen’sbasketball(1995and2000)andoneeachinmen’sbasketball(1999)andmen’ssoccer(2000).
Hathawaywasalsotheprogramadministratorforfootball.HeplayedacriticalroleintheupgradeofthefootballprogramtoDivisionI-AstatusasUConnbecamethefirsteverschooltotransitionfromtheI-AAleveltoaBCSfootballconference.
During Hathaway’s tenure at Colorado State, he oversaw a 15-sportprogram-ninewomen’steamsandsixmen’s.TheRamfootballteammadeapairofbowlappearanceswhileHathawaywasatCSU.Themen’sbasket-ballteamwontheMountainWestConferencetournamentinMarchof‘03andadvancedtotheNCAAtournamentforthefirsttimein13years.Thewomen’sbasketballteamadvancedtopostseasonplaytwice,includingatriptothesecondroundoftheNCAAtournamentin2002andthesemifinalsofthe2003Women’sNIT.
HathawaywasanextremelysuccessfulfundraiserduringhistimeinFortCollins.Theschooldrewnationalattentionfora$15.2milliongiftfromtheBohemianFoundationandpresidentPatStrykerforfootballstadiumrenova-tionsandexpansion.
Prior to his first stint at UConn, Hathaway served in a number ofcapacitiesathisalmamater - theUniversityofMaryland- from1982-90,includingAssistantAthleticsDirectorforMarketingandPromotions,ActingAssistantAthleticsDirectorforBusinessAffairs,AthleticsBusinessManagerandmen’sbasketballtrainer.
Hathaway earned his Bachelor of Science degree in AthleticAdministrationfromtheUniversityofMarylandin1981.Helaterreceiveda Master’s Degree in General Administration (1991) from the Universityof Maryland and is currently continuing work on a PhD in EducationalLeadershipfromtheUniversityofConnecticut.
He attended The Sports Management Institute at the Universitiesof Notre Dame and Southern California. Hathaway also completed theManagementDevelopmentProgramatHarvardUniversity.
