    Reflection

Those who celebrate the mighty resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, therefore, havean awesome responsibility. When we say, Alleluia! Christ is Risen, we are saying thatJesus is Lord of the world, and that the present would-be lords of the world are not. When we sing, in the old hymn, that Judahs Lion burst his chains, and crushed theserpents head, are we ready to put that victory into practice?

...Are we ready to speak up for the truth of the gospel over the dinner table, and in thecoffee bar, and in the council chamber? Lets make no bones about it: if Easter isntgood news, then there is no good news. But if it isif it is true that Jesus Christ is risenindeedthen Easter day, and the Easter message, is the true sun which, when it rises, puts all other suns to shame.

    Opening of Worship

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; All his steadfast love endures forever!

The Lord is my strength and my might;he has become my salvation. There are glad songs of victory in the tents of the righteous:The right hand of the Lord does valiantly;the right hand of the Lord is exalted;the right hand of the Lord does valiantly.I shall not die, but I shall live, and I shall recount the deeds of the Lord. The Lord has punished me severely, but he did not give me over to death.I thank you that you have answered me,and you have become my salvation.

The stone that the builders rejected,it has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lords doing;it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day that the Lord has made;let us rejoice and be glad in it! from Psalm 118

Grace, mercy, and peacefrom God our Fatherand the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

    All and also with you.

    Confession of Sin

All Jesus Christ, risen Master and triumphant Lord,we come to you confessing our sin and ruin.Like your followers who remained in Jerusalem,we find ourselves frightened and doubting.Even as you appear and draw near to us,we stand by in sorrow and confusion.Have mercy upon us and forgive us.

Words of Comfort and Assurance of Pardon

May the God of love and powerforgive you and free you from your sins,

heal and strengthen you by his Spirit, and raise you to new life in Christ our Lord.

    All Amen.

    The Word of God

    New Testament reading: Colossians 3:1-4

1 So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is,seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things that are above, not on thingsthat are on earth, 3for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4WhenChrist who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

    Gospel reading: John 20:1-18

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All Glory to you, O Lord.

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to thetomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. 2 So she ran and wentto Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them,They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid

    him.

    3

Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb.

    4

The twowere running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5Hebent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6ThenSimon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappingslying there, 7 and the cloth that had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linenwrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached thetomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9for as yet they did not understand thescripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10Then the disciples returned to their homes.

11But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into thetomb; 12and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13They said to her, Woman, why are youweeping? She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know wherethey have laid him. 14When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standingthere, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you

weeping? Whom are you looking for? Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take himaway. 16Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabbouni!(which means Teacher). 17Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have notyet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending tomy Father and your Father, to my God and your God. 18Mary Magdalene went andannounced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord; and she told them that he had saidthese things to her.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

    Offering and Presentation of Gifts

As the offering is collected, members of the congregation bring forward the gifts of

bread and wine, setting them upon the table.

    The Nicene Creed

All We believe in one God,the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all that is,

    seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Maryand was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose againin accordance with the Scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.Amen.

    Prayers

Members of the congregation lead us in prayer.

O Christ, you broke free from the prison of the tomb, and at your command the power of death was broken. You were once dead, but now you rule over all creation;may your mercy extend to people of every tribe and nation.Glory be to you, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer.

All Hear us, Lord of glory.

Almighty God, you raised your Son from the graveand broke the power of death, so that death itself shall die.As your baptized people, we now celebrate this triumph, having died to sin in Christ that we might live new lives.Glory be to you, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer.

All Hear us, Lord of glory.

Help us to uncover in our lives all that should rightly dieold habits, fruitless passions and desires, sinful patternsand raise us up to new life in faith, hope, and love,as surely as you raised Jesus Christ from the grave.Glory be to you, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer.

All Hear us, Lord of glory.

God of hope, grant comfort and restore all who suffer,

that they may know the power of your risen life.Make us willing agents of your compassionand strengthen us to minister your wholeness to others.Glory be to you, O Lord, our strength and our redeemer.

All Hear us, Lord of glory.

    The Lords Prayer

    Now let us pray boldly as our risen Savior has taught us:All Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory for ever and ever.

    Amen.

    Prayers for Reflection

    Prayer for those searching

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and lead me to the reality of who you are. Grant that I mightbe undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. Give mean understanding that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise.

    Prayer of belief

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weak and sinful, but through you, I am loved andaccepted. I thank you for taking my place in death in order to offer me forgiveness and

renewal. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins andreceive you as my Savior and my Lord.

Prayer for those struggling with sin

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn fromevery false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay asidethe sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life.
