CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Gracious and loving God, as we reflect on the wonder and glory of your being, we are conscious of our failure to learn from the sacrificial love of Jesus. So often our understanding of glory is linked with prestige and power and position. Forgive us when selfish pursuit of glory takes precedence over Jesus’ command to love one another as he has loved us. Renew and rekindle our love for you and for one another. Fill our hearts and minds with the selfless love of Christ so that we will glorify you in all we do and say. This we pray in Jesus’ name.

PRAYERS OF SILENT AND INDIVIDUAL CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

Leader: Friends, believe and proclaim the Good News: in Jesus Christ, love breaks through hatred, hope breaks

through despair, life breaks through death.

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, loved, and set free. Thanks be to God! Amen.

* CONGREGATIONAL RESPONSE Hymnal No. 579 Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, Amen.

* EXCHANGE OF PEACE

Leader: Let us open our hearts to one another as Christ has opened his heart to us, and God will be glorified.

People: The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

(Exchange Signs of Reconciliation and the Peace of Christ with your neighbor - e.g., “The Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.”

Response - “And also with you.”)

THE WORD

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

FIRST LESSON Psalm 148

ANTHEM I Believe That My Redeemer Lives Peloquin

I believe that my Redeemer lives, and that on the last day I shall rise from the earth. And in my flesh I shall see God, my Savior. It will not be some other being, but I myself who see him, my own eyes shall look upon him. JOB 19: 25-27

SECOND LESSON John 13:31-38

SERMON “Boundlessly” Rev. Richard S. Hong

THE OFFERING

OFFERTORY Creating God David Hurd

Creating God, your fingers trace the bold designs of farthest space; let sun and moon and stars and light and what lies hidden praise your might.

Sustaining God, your hands uphold earth's mysteries known or yet untold; let water's fragile blend with air, enabling life, proclaim your care.

Redeeming God, your arms embrace all now despised for creed or race; let peace, descending like a dove, make known on earth your healing love.

Indwelling God, your gospel claims one family with a billion names; let every life be touched by grace until we praise you face to face.

* THE DOXOLOGY WITH ALLELUIAS Lasst uns erfreuen

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below, Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host. Creator, Son and Holy Ghost, Alleluia, Alleluia Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

PASTORAL PRAYER & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

TODAYS MUSIC

Felix Mendelssohn’s (1809-1847) six organ sonatas were published in 1845 and are the first significant organ works by a German composer since Bach. Mendelssohn’s playing of Bach and his brilliant improvisations during a recital tour of England lead to a London publisher commissioning a set of organ Voluntaries from him. These were reworked into the six sonatas, which are each a collection of varying pieces rather than the classical sonata form. Alexander Peloquin (1918-1997) was a leading composer of music for the Catholic Church during the liturgical changes of Vatican II. He served for 41 years as musician at the Catholic cathedral in Providence, Rhode Island. David Hurd (born 1950) is a composer, concert organist, choral director and educator. He is a Professor of Sacred Music and Director of Chapel Music at the General Theological Seminary, Chelsea, New York City. He was also the Music Director at the Church of the Holy Apostles, also in Chelsea, until May 2013.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Psalm 148 (NRSV) 1Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD from the heavens; praise him in the heights! 2Praise him, all his angels; praise him, all his host! 3Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars! 4Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens! 5Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. 6He established them forever and ever; he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed. 7Praise the LORD from the earth, you sea monsters and all deeps, 8fire and hail, snow and frost, stormy wind fulfilling his command! 9Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! 10Wild animals and all cattle, creeping things and flying birds! 11Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! 12Young men and women alike, old and young together! 13Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his glory is above earth and heaven. 14He has raised up a horn for his people, praise for all his faithful, for the people of Israel who are close to him. Praise the LORD! John 13:31-38 (NRSV) When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself and will glorify him at once. 33Little children, I am with you only a little longer. You will look for me; and as I said to the Jews so now I say to you, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’ 34I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. 35By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” 36Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow me now; but you will follow afterward.” 37Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Very truly, I tell you, before the cock crows, you will have denied me three times.
