“When I first came to this area from Cuba, it was clear to me that
not many people knew how to restore brick facades. So I started this
business in which we restore all types of masonry. Damage to brick and
masonry wall happens for any number of reasons. Sometimes there’s an
accident, maybe a storm. Or it might just be the passage of time—after
about 30 years, it is normal to see wear-and-tear with brick.
“The mortar used in the repair work is very important. Most mortar is
made of sand and cement, but we mix our own acrylic-based mortar that
withstands the weather by expanding with rising temperatures and also
moves as the house settles.
“With brick restoration, it is essential to address structural issues
first, but sometimes the repair work is simply cosmetic. Either way, Brick

treated to a site tour of two parade costume providers, leg-
ends since the 1930s. “There were masks, boas, bolts of
fabric — from theatrical cloth to Italian wool. Everything was
lovingly preserved,” she says. “And I did it all with an eye
towards bringing it to Houston.”

� Identify the room or area for your home theater.
� Use a custom home theater company forplanning, equipment and advice.
� Decide on the room’s purpose. Will itinclude a pool table or other items?
� Determine the budget. Theater rooms cancost from $10,000 to $20,000 for themost basic equipment and furnishings.

The choices may seem overwhelming, but you can focus on rugs with real
potential by determining your size, color, design and budget requirements.
“Beginning with the rug can simplify the design process for your room.
The rug should be an anchor piece. With the rug as the starting point,
selecting colors and patterns for the walls and upholstery becomes much
easier. If you don’t have the luxury of building up from the rug, take a
swatch of fabric, a pillow or a paint chip along with your measurements
when you look for rugs.”
