Dr. Mary Jane GilbertDr. Mary Jane Gilbert, in the record books as Mary Jane Lavender, was a pioneer of women’s athletics at the University of Arkansas at Mon-ticello. In fact, she was the driving force in the creation of the UAM Cotton Blossom basketball team. She became the program’s first head coach in 1973 and wasted no time to create a winning tradition. After a year of getting used to competing at the collegiate level, Gil-bert’s teams won or shared five consecutive conference champion-ships from 1974-79 in the Arkansas Women’s Intercollegiate Sports Association. She still owns UAM’s record for the highest career win percentage after winning 73 percent of her team’s games with an overall record of 111-41. In 1994, she was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame for Outstanding Achievement and Meritorious Service. The UAM Sports Hall of Fame made Gilbert its second female inductee in 2001.
