Join Charles Ferguson (IH ‘73-’76), I-House Alumnus of the Year 2011, as he discusses his new book, Predator Nation that explores the fierce truth about the roots of the financial crisis, rising economic inequality and how we might reclaim the American Dream. His other books include, High Stakes, No Prisoners: A Winner’s Tale of Greed and Glory in the Internet Wars and Computer Wars: The Post-IBM World (co-authored with Charles Morris).

Charles Ferguson is the founder and president of Representational Pictures, Inc. He is director and

producer of Inside Job, winning the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2011, and No End In Sight: The American Occupation of Iraq, nominated in the same category in 2008. A book signing will follow the presentation.

Chade-Meng Tan (Meng) is a Google pioneer, an award-winning engineer, a bestselling author, a thought leader, and a philanthropist. He is also quite funny. Meng is Google’s Jolly Good Fellow (which nobody can deny) a title that began as a joke, but soon became a reality. He was one of Google’s earliest engineers for eight years, Head of Personal Growth for two, and now serves on Google’s Talent Team. His current role is to “enlighten minds, open hearts, create world peace.”

One of Meng’s major projects at Google is a groundbreaking mindfulness-based emotional intelligence course called Search Inside Yourself. The course, intended to transform the work and lives of the best and brightest behind one of the most innovative and successful businesses in the world, is also the title of Meng’s New York Times bestselling book. A veteran environmental leader, Mr. Pope worked for the Sierra Club for more than thirty years. In that time he has served as Political Director, Conservation Director, Executive Director, and Chairman. He stepped down as Chairman in 2012 to become a Senior Strategic Advisor and established Inside Straight Strategies, a consulting firm focused on the intersection between climate, sustainability and economic development.

Mr. Pope also was a key catalytic leader in the effort to build a “Big Tent” progressive movement, taking the lead in creating partnerships between environmentalists and workers, which culminated in the 2011 merger of

two organizations which he had founded, The Blue Green Alliance and the Apollo Alliance, which now constitute the largest progressive membership coalition in the U.S.

The New Abolitionism: Challenging U.S. Deportation Practices

JaCquelIne sTevens MarCh 14, 2013, 7:30 PM The Department of Homeland Security’s kidnapping of U.S. residents is at record and heart-breaking levels. Often portrayed as efforts to thwart illegal migration, Professor Stevens’ talk will reveal the secretive and unlawful procedure government employees and private jails use to deport U.S. residents and the resistance organized by activists, attorneys, and law professors.

Dr. Stevens is a UC Berkeley alumna and a political theorist at Northwestern University. Her scholarship explores political theories of membership, with a focus on laws interpellating national, ethnic, and racial groups through family or kinship laws. Her most recent book is

States Without Nations: Citizenship for Mortals. Professor Stevens currently directs the Deportation Research Clinic at the Buffett Center for International and Comparative Studies. This project engages a network of U.S. residents in deportation jails, attorneys, journalists, activists, scholars and students to study and challenge unlawful state violence.
