“Meeting the needs of the present, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” – Burtland Commission (1987)

The challenges of rapid urbanization are mounting; many cities are currently searching for effective sustainable development solutions. It is estimated that by 2010, 50% of the population of developing countries will be living in cities and eight out of ten largest cities of the World will be in developing countries. Over three quarters of those cities are exposed to at least one natural hazard. Yet, cities are ill- prepared to effectively respond to such events, and the collective effort to reduce risk from disasters continues to be meagre compared to the constant increase in risk caused by urbanization and aging infrastructure. Not just the risk of disasters, energy security, housing, fuel efficient urban transport system and urban poor health has been issues which cities are grappling with. Energy security and sustainable development have quickly risen to the top of the global development agenda. Off late the safety and security of city residents from incidents of terrorism, crime in general and crime against women in particular have increased.

Developing Sustainable and Safer Cities is what every country in the world is looking forward to. Sustainable development is possible with social and structured economic transformation (i.e. development) which optimizes the economic and societal benefits available in the present, without jeopardizing the likely potential for similar benefits in future. An integrated and holistic approach to urban development encompassing social, environmental and economic dimensions is required to deal with the challenges.

Sustainable and Safer cities are possible only through urban good governance, appropriate urban management, and planning. Sustainable and integrated urban development brings in the crucial linkages between cities and their environment, at local, metropolitan, regional, national and global levels. Keeping this linkage in mind and sharing of best practices, All India Institute of Local self Government is organizing a two day International Conference on “Local Governments for Sustainable Development”.

Though the subject Sustainable Development of cities includes urban planning, infrastructure, transport, disaster management, environmental issues, poverty alleviation, basic services for urban poor, crime control etc. all these cannot be covered in one single seminar. Hence the main themes of discussion will be as follows:- • Urbanisation & Climate Change • Disaster Risk, Vulnerability Assessment & Mitigation • Urban Environment- Water, Sanitation & Waste Treatment • Clean Energy, Carbon Credits and Alternate Transport • Climate Resilient Cities • Urban Poor Housing and Health • Role of Communities and Stakeholders in Partnerships • Leadership Role – Policy and Governmental Responsibility
