Bryant has enjoyed tremendous growth and success in athletics over the past few years withquite fruitful results, the apex of which came in

2008-09 with its move up to the Division I ranks.

On the field, bountiful Bulldog teams and individualshave qualified for a number of NCAA Championships. In its final four years of Division II competition, 55teams qualified for the postseason, including all 22sports in the Bulldogs’ unprecedented 2007-08 campaign. Six teams captured Northeast-10 Conference titles in Bryant’s final year of Division IIplay, three of them winning both the regular seasonand the league tournament.

In 2007-08, Bryant athletic teams made 16 NCAATournament appearances, featured seven All-America picks, 15 all-region selections, 60 all-conference accolades, two conference Coach of theYear honors, two tournament MVPs and one conference Player of the Year en route to its fourthNortheast-10 President’s Cup Trophy in the last fiveyears. That year alone, the Bulldogs boasted 24 academic all-conference selections.

The University saw the men’s lacrosse team earn anational No. 1 ranking in its final year of Division II,while women’s soccer enjoyed its highest nationalranking in program history, grabbing the No. 2 spot.Other nationally ranked teams in 2007-08 includedbaseball, field hockey and men’s tennis.

The Bulldogs opened up a new era of Bryant

Athletics in 2008-09, and to amazing results. Witheach of Bryant’s 22 programs earning its first Division I win, the Bulldogs knocked off teams fromthe Big East, Ivy League, America East, Patriot League,ACC, Atlantic 10 and CAA en route to a truly impressive year, both on the field and off. Four teamswould finish .500 or better, including football, baseball and men’s lacrosse, while golf took firstplace at the New England Championships. The men’slacrosse program received votes in both national pollswhile 124 student-athletes were named to the Northeast Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Bryant will continue DI competition during its four-year reclassification period before becoming a fullmember of the NEC in 2012-13.

Bryant offers 22 varsity sports, with its most recentaddition to the Bulldog community coming in 2005with the debut of men’s and women’s swimming.

In addition to its intercollegiate sports programs,Bryant also offers 11 club sports teams and a popular intramural program throughout the academicyear.

Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the

Tupperware Corpora-tion. Mr. Tupper donated his 220-

acre Smithfield farmestate to what was then

Bryant College on October24, 1967. Tupper, who had

originally planned to sell hisestate, was so impressed

with Bryant that he decided todonate the land instead, allowing

Bryant to move from its original locationon Providence’s East Side to its current

Smithfield, R.I. residence.

Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move,Tupper the Bulldog was born.

BRYANT TURF COMPLEX

Ahighlight of Bryant University’s stellar athletic facilities, the Bryant Turf Complex was completed in2006 to provide a new home for Bulldog field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s andwomen’s lacrosse.

Made from Sprinturf technology, the field provides a consistent G-max level that trumps even the mostprestine of natural grass fields. The playing surface is surrounded by a state-of-the-art track, rennovated in 2006 as part of the Turf Field project, which houses both the men’s and women’s track

and field programs, while the field also serves as a practice facility for a number of Bryant teams.

With the recent addition of stadium lights, the Complex also allows for athletic practice and competition throughout the seasons. A new scoreboard provides the Bulldogs with timing and scoringnot just for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, but also for track timing up to eight lanes. Meanwhile,Bryant’s recently installed bleachers accomodate its many fans — the Bulldogs drew a crowd of over 1,000for its men’s lacrosse contest against crosstown Brown University in 2009.

The Bryant Turf Complex is located adjacent to Bulldog Stadium, and the complex shares the stadium’sconcourse, training room, concession stand and restrooms. An upgrade to the stadium’s concourse, completed in 2009, also gives Turf Field teams new and improved locker rooms of their own inside the com-plex, offering cutting edge video technology, coaches lockers and comfortable and accomodating team rooms.

In addition to serving as the home of Bryant field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, the Bryant Turf Complexhas played host to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, Relay for Life and several conference and NCAAchampionships.

of-the-art selectorized circuit machines, treadmills, ellipticalcross trainers, recumbent and virtual reality bikes, as well as

lifecycles, rowing machines and stairsteppers.

The Elizabeth and Malcolm Chace Wellness & Athletic Centerserves as the hub for the entire department of athletics. This 9,000-square

foot facility houses Bryant’s fully resurfaced basketball and volleyball courts, the fitness center, Jarvis Varsity Weight Room, pool, excercise studio and two

practice courts, and is also home to the athletic department staff.

Hon. Ronald K. MachtleyBryant University President U

nder the leadership of President Ronald K.Machtley, Bryant University has evolved intoone of the most progressive and leading in-

stitutions of higher learning in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind thescenes when it comes to intercollegiate athletics,Machtley — a former collegiate student-athlete inhis own right — has been an ardent supporter ofBulldog sports since becoming the University’sseventh president in 1996.

Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence”initiated the most significant enhancements to theBryant campus and community since the univer-sity’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no ex-ception. His New Century Plan saw the Bulldogs’varsity athletics program expand to 22 teams withthe addition of football, field hockey, men’s andwomen’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s andwomen’s swimming.

The addition of the new varsity programs broughtabout an overhaul of the university’s athletics fa-cilities as well. These renovations are highlightedby the construction of Bulldog Stadium, whichserves as the home of the Bryant football, soccerand lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-artfields for baseball, softball and field hockey.Changes to Bulldog athletics also inspired andsupported the introduction of the Wellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health and fitnesscenter that is second to none.

Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in Juneof 1996, Mr. Machtley was best known as one ofRhode Island’s leading public servants. He served

as a member of the United States House of Rep-resentatives from 1988 to 1995 and was a mem-ber of the House Armed Services Committee. Hewas also the ranking Republican on the Small Busi-ness Committee’s Minority Enterprise, Finance andUrban Development Subcommittee and co-founder of the first House Working Group on Men-tal Health. As a reflection of the esteem in whichhis congressional colleagues held him, Mr. Macht-ley was elected president of his congressional classduring each of his terms in the House.

Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr.Machtley served as a partner in the internationaltelecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker,Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is admit-ted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massachu-setts and Florida.

President Machtley is a 1970 graduate of theUnited States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Heearned a juris doctorate from Suffolk University in1978 and served on active duty in the UnitedStates Navy. For a program that has risen to successso quickly since its inception just 10years ago, the Bryant University field

hockey program will enter one of its mostcrucial and exciting seasons in 2009.

After nine standout years at the top of Di-vision II competition, the Bulldogs madethe jump to Division I in 2008 and weremet with intermittent success — some-thing the program wasn’t quite used to.

But now, in 2009, under the watchful eyeof first-year head coach ShaunessySaucier, the Bulldogs look to bounce backand take their highly competitive DivisionI schedule by storm.

To do that, Bryant will have to rely not juston the experience, skill and composure ofits returning veterans, but also on a cast ofseven young and promising freshmen whowill be asked to adjust quickly and con-tribute immediately to a faster paced, ph-syically charged collegiate game.

THE ATTACKAfter a 2008 season that saw the Bulldogsstruggle to muster quality scoring chances,Saucier will look to some of her youngerguns to carry the offensive burden in 2009.

Junior Elise Boissoneau (Ashburnham,Mass.) will lead that charge, utilizing notjust her great speed but also her fight towin to anchor the front line. One of themost dedicated competitors on the field,Boissoneau will be pushed daily by eightothers looking to join her on the attack.

Among them are seniors Tia Pydynkowski(Hampton Falls, N.H.) and Kelly Frantz(Southbury, Conn.). Sidelined by injury forthe 2009 spring season, Pydynkowski isexpected to return to the Bulldogs readyto go this fall and will bring an exciting di-mension of speed and skill. The quick andathletic Frantz brings her own unique assetto the front line as a solid defensive for-ward for the Bulldogs.

A natural runner with an impeccable touchin front of the net,Courtney Landi(Kingston, N.Y.)looks to continueimproving in hersophomore cam-paign while class-mate Aly Czerniak(Holyoke, Mass.)will be a viable op-tion to fill holes inthe offense with

her extreme coachability.

Saucier also looks to incoming freshmanElise Driscoll (Harwich, Mass.) to have an

immediate impact on the field. A naturalathlete who comes to Bryant already in-credibly fast and skilled, Driscoll has thepotential to be an exciting player right fromthe start.

Also looking to earn time will be juniors AlexGuisti (Walpole, Mass.) and Toby Maltz(Andover, Mass.), as well as incomingrookie Asia O’Han (Red Hook, N.Y.), all ofwhom have the ability to impress offensively.

THE MIDFIELDWith a solid core of returning midfieldersand a promising trio of newcomers, theBulldog midfield should anchor the team intransition. Senior captain Danielle Moody(Gorham, Maine) is a leader on the fieldand her fight and motivation will keep herin the game as much as possible in 2009.

She will be joined by returning standoutCaitlan Johnson (Walpole, Mass.), whoimproved her game tremendously in thespring season and will use her strength andhockey IQ to make an impact this season.

A fiesty player with a never-give-up atti-tude in sophomore Katherine Andrusin(North Andover, Mass.) will add anotherlevel of skill in the midfield. The Bulldogswill look to her to again be the difference-maker she was in 2008.

Another exciting player to join the midfieldis freshman Brittany Vasconcelos (Tiver-ton, R.I.), an offensive-minded player whopossesses sounds defensive skills. Class-mate Chiedza Mawema (Harare, Zim-babwe), the younger sister of standoutgoalkeeper Kundayi Mawema (Harare,Zimbabwe), is a smart, skilled player whoalso possesses smooth offensive prowess aswell as the ability to defend when necessary.

Senior Colleen Wilson (Windham,N.H.) and rookie Chelsea Theokas (Mer-rimack, N.H.) will also compete for timeat midfield.

THE DEFENSEDespite the graduation of starting de-fender Lauren Alexander, the Bulldogs arein solid shape on defense with a core ofveterans returning in 2009.

They will be led by sophomore EmilyCharpentier (Walpole, Mass.), who willanchor the defense this season. While op-ponents will struggle to beat her 1-on-1,Charpentier also plays stellar team de-fense. Combine that with her ability tostart the attack out of the backfield andshe is poised to spend considerable timeon the field in 2009.

An aggressive and passionate BrittanyGlenn (Easthampton, Mass.) and solidsophomore Karlie Tiscia (Stamford,Conn.) will also look to play a starting rolein the backfield. Glenn brings a substantialenergy that will help run the defensive linewhile Tiscia uses her unassuming defenseto get the job done from the left side.

Junior Julie Kuchyt(Hatfield, Mass.)will also contendfor time in theback, while a pairof newcomers inYeawoma John-son (Franklin,Mass.) and RachelBlitz (Riverwoods,Ill.) look to makean impression aswell.

Blitz, with her strong stick skills and po-tential to start the attack from deep in thedefensive third, will offer a new look to theBulldogs’ transition game and could seeimmediate playing time.

THE GOALKEEPERSOne of the most heated battles for playingtime will come between the pipes in 2009,as sophomore Jennifer Gullotti (Waltham,Mass.) will challenge senior captain Kun-dayi Mawema for the starting role.

The emotional leader of the team,Mawema has enjoyed one of the mostsuccessful careers in the history of theBryant field hockey program. Already theall-time leader in career saves with 428,she is extremely sound between the postsand is a smart decision-maker on the field.

But Mawema’s commanding presencewon’t scare off Gullotti’s competitive nature, and she is expected to enter preseason witha lot of fire. Gullotti will fight to start gamesand is a pusher not just during contests, butin practice and the weight room as well.
