Learn how to succeed as an entrepreneur and/or improve an existing business.

One Simple Wish

NEED: Increase partnerships and support for emerging social entrepreneur

One Simple Wish grants wishes in the form of goods, services, and money to impoverished foster children and at-risk youth in New Jersey. Founded by two foster parents, One Simple Wish highlights specific children on their website for donors to “adopt” and grant wishes with partnering non-profit organizations. PBU-SIFE helped implement Dandelion Dollars at banks to increase donations and assisted in developing a support database.

Results: 146% increase in partnerships from15to37•333%increaseinwishes grantedfrom150to650•160donors

Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission Thrift Store

NEED: Design and implement sustainable marketing initiatives for new social entrepreneur

PBU-SIFE assisted Sunday Breakfast Rescue Mission Thrift Store in creating sustainable marketing initiatives. Fifteen team members distributed 1,500 promotional fliers on the first annual Marketing Day. PBU-SIFE members designed an eBay account and a customer database to maximize profits. Thrift Store profits support an inner-city shelter and employment program.

Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow

NEED: Educate students as future entrepreneurs

PBU-SIFE taught entrepreneurial skills, targeting children and economically challenged youth. Students created their own businesses while learning about marketing, ethics, and organizational sustainability at The People’s Emergency Center, a homeless shelter in Philadelphia, and the Norris Square Neighborhood Project.

NEED: Assist college students to prevent debt

PBU-SIFE, supported by the AIG Credit Counseling Challenge Grant, hosted the fourth annual From Red to Black seminar to highlight the dangers of debt. Financial specialists taught interactive workshops on how to use credit, manage college debt, and invest.

Financial Fitness Boot Camp

NEED: Teach money management to children

Partnering with the Bucks First Federal Credit Union, PBU-SIFE participated in the first annual community Financial Fitness Boot Camp. Money Savvy Generation piggy banks demonstrated the importance of saving, spending, donating, and investing. Participants also learned ethical money management.

Green Campus

NEED: Sustain University-wide environmental initiative

PBU’s Green Campus initiative expanded into its second year. Partnership with SIFE sponsor, Waste Management, continued as recycling tonnage increased. After instituting a single-stream recycling system and placing recycling receptacles throughout campus, students received weekly multi-media reminders to encourage energy conservation.

PBU-SIFE incorporated ethics education into core projects, and taught children to honestly manage money. High school students learned about ethics in marketing and business competition. College students learned the consequences of inflating resumes and being dishonest during interviews. Ex-prisoners were encouraged to live a life of integrity and pursue truth in employment.

Enabling Entrepreneurs

NEED: Provide financial resources for entrepreneurs in developing countries

Entrepreneurs from impoverished communities around the world received financial assistance from PBU-SIFE. Through Kiva, a non-profit organization that works with microfinance institutions worldwide, PBU-SIFE provided money to new business owners. The team’s initial $1,000 has been multiplied through reinvestment to provide 94 loans, totaling $4,500. Loans have been given to 571 entrepreneurs in 16 countries. Of the 94 loans, 58 have been fully repaid with a 0% default rate. PBU-SIFE maximized the impact of the microloan program by inviting others to join the team’s lending group, creating 5 additional loans.

NEED: Equip job-seekers with the essentials for employment

PBU-SIFE’s two-day seminar, R.I.D.E. (Resume, Interview, Dress, Etiquette), taught college stu-dents and community members the fundamentals of resume preparation, interviewing, dress, and professional etiquette. B.A.B. members presented the core skills required for success in today’s competitive job market. The program included a dress showcase featuring business attire from SIFE sponsor, JCPenney. After equipping participants with the necessary tools, PBU-SIFE organized a series of practice interviews conducted by B.A.B. members and community professionals.

Career Fair

NEED: Provide networking and job opportunities during a challenging economy

Sixty-two compa-nies and non-profit organizations, including five SIFE sponsors, exhibited at the sixth annual

Career Fair. PBU-SIFE’s Career Fair is the Univer-sity’s primary event that provides networking opportunities for students and community members. Over 350 students and community job-seekers at-tended as a result of PBU-SIFE’s marketing efforts, including door-to-door Storm the Dorm publicity, promotional class presentations, and publication in nine media outlets. The second annual Resume Doctor assisted attendees in resume development prior to the event and on site during the Fair.

The Liberty Project

NEED: Train ex-prisoners with job-seeking skills to re-enter the job market

Partnering with Liberty Ministries, an intensive residential rehabilitation program, PBU-SIFE offered three training seminars for 10 ex-felons seeking to re-enter the job market. Through interactive group sessions and one-on-one assistance, PBU-SIFE taught job preparation skills and motivated the men to pursue work with integrity. A B.A.B. member from SIFE-sponsoring company, Walgreens, joined the seminar to present from the employers’ perspective. The participants learned about resume development, networking, interviewing techniques, and professional etiquette and attire. PBU-SIFE also taught fundamentals specific to the ex-prisoners, including honestly acknowledging the past and sharing present success stories demonstrating their changed lives.
