2 Timothy 4:1-4 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

2 Timothy 4:1-4I charge you therefore before God and the Lord

Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word!

Theme VersePreach the word! Be ready in season and

out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. - 2 Timothy 4:2

We need people who speak the truth daily

Several biblical examples

Page 4: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

John the Baptist“Herod had arrested John and bound him,

and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. Because John had said to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.”

– Matthew 14:3-4

John’s truth speaking gets him killedThis was OUT OF SEASON preaching

Page 5: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

“Does anyone agree with those Christians?”

Jesus – The Bread of Life“Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not

give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” – John 6:32-33

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” – John 6:35

“The Jews then complained about Him, because He said, “I am the bread which came down from heaven.” - John 6:41

Page 7: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Jesus – The Bread of Life“ Therefore many of His disciples, when they

heard this, said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?” When Jesus knew in Himself that His disciples complained about this, He said to them, “Does this offend you?” – John 6:60-61

“From this time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life”

- John 6:66-68

Page 8: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

The HARD TruthThe truth may offend, but it is only the truth

that can save.

“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” - John 8:31-32

Do Not Be DiscouragedDon’t doubt the truthDon’t compromise the truthDon’t abandon the truth

“Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.” – 2 Timothy 3:12

Page 11: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

A Confrontational DiscipleWhen Jesus says he has to suffer this man

pulls Jesus aside and rebukes Him

When Jesus is being arrested he pulls out a sword and fights back

The Apostle Peter

Acts 2Day of Pentecost – 50 days after PassoverBirthday of the churchJesus prepared Peter for this day

“…you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church…I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven…” – Matthew 16:18-19

Acts 2Peter stands in front of a hostile crowdCorrects their misunderstanding of the

tonguesPeter confronts their sin from the scriptures

“Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified both Lord and Christ.” – Acts 2:36

Out of Season - Only 50 days removed

Page 14: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Acts 2:37-38John 8:32 – the truth will set you free

“Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Does This Style Work? Some doubt the style, too direct, too harsh. It worked for 3,000 people – Acts 2:41

This style can have amazing results, but also amazing consequences.

Page 16: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Stephen in Acts 7“Now when they heard this, they were cut

to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” – Acts 2:37

“When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth…ran at him…cast him out of the city…stoned him.” – Acts 7:51-58

Page 17: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Caution # 1Can be easily abused and used for hatredEvery example showed the speaker LOVED the

crowd and that’s why they spoke the truthDoctors don’t tell family members that their

loved ones have died because they want to see them cry, but because they have to speak the truth.

“speaking the truth in love” – Ephesians 4:15

“Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt…” – Colossians 4:6

Page 18: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Caution # 2This is not the only evangelism style

Those with this style tend to think all people should have this style

Page 19: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Caution # 3If this is not your style, remember, it is the

style of some Christians.

Do not discourage confrontational evangelists through your own fear and discomfort

Page 20: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

Let us all speak the truthWithout the fear of the

consequences

Page 21: 2 Timothy 4:1-4

“Men and brethren, what shall we do?”

Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission

of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
