First Baptist Church to presentspecial Easter Program Keeping it real

5 ways to focus on the real reason for the Easter season

Easter is on the way, and practicing Christians across the globe have spent the Lenten season preparing for the day when they celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent is a season best spent in the company of close friends and family, and the following are a few ways for Chris-tians to celebrate their faith in the weeks leading up to Easter Sunday.

• Give Easter eggs a different mean-ing. Easter eggs are popular among youngsters, and that popularity can be used to teach kids about their faith. Eggs are frequently viewed as a symbol of new life, so parents can use them to show their children how Christ died and was born anew. Eggs can be fi lled with small items that symbolize something related to Christ's story. Or they can be left empty to represent the empty tomb after His res-urrection.

• Eat food that conveys Biblical sto-ries. For Easter dinner, enjoy foods that are mentioned in the Bible. A fi sh dinner can convey the story of how Jesus multi-plied fi sh to feed the crowds, or dine on lamb and share the story of Passover.

• Participate in church services. Throughout Lent, many parishes offer Easter vigils or specialized services that relate the account of Jesus' life and subse-quent death on the cross. Some churches

may recreate realistic stations of the Cross. Employing pageantry to bring biblical sto-ries to life can help young children visual-ize and better understand the meaning of Easter.

• Create a Christ-centered Easter basket. Parents can still fi ll kids' Easter baskets with some of the familiar confec-tionary treats, but those parents who im-part lessons about their faith to their kids also can include books about the story of Easter, rosary beads, a crucifi x for a child's room, and maybe a children's Bible.

• Make time for volunteer work. Many families reserve volunteerism for the Christmas season, but Easter also marks a great time to volunteer. In a sea-son that focuses on the ultimate sacrifi ce, families can open their hearts to others. In-vite someone over for Easter dinner who has nowhere to go. Share your holiday celebrations with a person of another faith so that he or she may be able to see what makes this time of year special. Create a service jar fi lled with small, loving tasks everyone in the family can do each day.

The Lenten season, including Easter, is the most celebrated time of the year for Christians. Families can enjoy the festivi-ties by blending many different traditions together and by focusing on the spirituality of the season.

Page 2: 2 7 ˜ e Easter Lily Harmony Primitive Baptist Get to know ... · Easter, rosary beads, a crucifi x for a child's room, and maybe a children's Bible. • Make time for volunteer

Each holiday is marked by cherished traditions that bring joy, comfort, and warmth, and provide continuity from one generation to the next. Easter has its share of traditions: egg decorations and hunts; gift baskets and chocolate bunnies, sunrise church services, parades, and, of course, the Easter Lily. For many, the beautiful trum-pet-shaped white flowers symbol-ize purity, virtue, innocence, hope and life - the spiritual essence of Easter.

History, mythology, literature, poetry and the world of art are rife with stories and images that speak of the beauty and majesty of the el-egant white flowers. Dating back to Biblical lore, the lily is mentioned numerous times in the Bible. One of the most famous Biblical refer-

ences is in the

Sermon on the Mount, when

Christ told his listeners: "Consid-er the lilies of the field, how they grow: they toil not, neither do they spin; and yet..... Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these."

Often called the "white-robed apostles of hope," lilies were found growing in the Garden of Gethsemane after Christ's agony. Tradition has it that the beautiful white lilies sprung up where drops of Christ's sweat fell to the ground in his final hours of sorrow and deep distress. Churches contin-ue this tradition at Easter time by banking their alters and surround-ing their crosses with masses of Easter Lilies, to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and hope of life everlasting.

Since the beginning of time, lil-ies have played significant roles in allegorical tales concerning the sacrament of motherhood. Ancient fables tell us the lily sprang from the milk of Hera, the mythological Queen of Heaven.

The pure white lily has long been closely associated with the Virgin Mary. In early paintings, the Angel Gabriel is pictured extending to the Virgin Mary a branch of pure white lilies, announcing that she is to be the mother of the Christ Child. In other paintings, saints

are pictured bringing vases full of white lilies to Mary and the infant Jesus.

The legend is told that when the Virgin Mary’s tomb was visited three days after her burial, it was found empty save for bunches of majestic white lilies. Early writers and artists made the lily the em-blem of the Annunciation, the Res-urrection of the Virgin: the pure white petals signifying her spot-less body and the golden anthers her soul glowing with heavenly light.

THIS WE BELIEVE:

1. We Believe in a successful Savior.

We believe that Jesus Christ ac-complished what He came to do. Jesus didn’t die on the cross and rise from the grave only to make people savable. He didn’t do all of that to qualify people to be saved. Jesus came to save His people from their sins. (Matthew 1:21). We believe that He did it!

2. We Believe in Security.Since we believe that Jesus was

successful, we also believe His people are secure. This means that

none that Christ died for will suf-fer in hell. His people, the elect, are secure in a Savior’s love.

3. We believe in Grace. We believe that salvation is by

grace. Since grace is void of any human merit we believe that our sins were paid for by God’s free gift, Jesus Christ. That is grace! We believe that God’s people are born again by the immediate work of the Holy Spirit without the use of church ordinances, reciting words or any human means. That, too, is by grace. And when we fail, we believe that God’s grace is sufficient.

4. We Worship As Families. Our worship service is very

simple. Families worship togeth-

er. Children sit with their parents and sing together. They hear the same message. As a pastor, I have been blessed by the response of children from some of our mes-sages. This promotes family di-alog about the worship service. This was the method of worship of the infant church.

5. We Observe the Bible as God’s revelation of Himself to His people.

We believe the Bible is given to God’s people to know more about Him. It informs His people about His creation, His Holiness, His righteousness, His immutability,

His sovereignty, His eternal love for His people, His Son, and the Holy Spirit. It teaches His people how to live and walk with Him.

This is the time of the year that Christians look to the cross and rejoice in a risen Savior. When we survey the wondrous cross of Jesus Christ and see an emp-ty tomb we are confident that Je-sus Christ accomplished what He came to do: He saved His people. We are also confident that we will one day be with Him and all the redeemed saints! May God bless you and yours.

Easter

ServicesThe Lord's Prayer for Children

Our Father who art in heaven;Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come;Thy will be done on earth as it

is in heaven;Give us this day our daily

bread;And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us;And lead us not into

temptation;But deliver us from evil;

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,

forever and ever.Amen.

The cross was empty and so was the tomb as the day began to break.Everywhere rumors did abound:The body of the Man called Jesus who had just been crucifi ed could not

be found. The neatly wrapped grave cloth was lying there for all to look upon. The tomb was open for someone had rolled away the stone. They came looking for a friend who was dead. The angel told them, “He is not here for He is risen just as He said.”The empty tomb speaks volumes concerning God’s plan. The ultimate sacrifi ce was paid to redeem back to God fallen man.The cross is a symbol of God’s love and grace for He who knew no sin

willingly took our place.Jesus lived, died, and rose

again, and now sits by the Father’s side.

Soon we will be with Him as the portals of Heaven open wide:

Will you join me there? As all of Heaven’s

beauty we can share.

Our Father who art in heaven;Hallowed be Thy Name;

Thy kingdom come;Thy will be done on earth as it

is in heaven;Give us this day our daily

bread;And forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us;And lead us not into

temptation;But deliver us from evil;

For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory,
