Good Shepherd Sunday John 10:1-10
This theme is very rich in literal and figurative language. First and most obvious, Jesus is Good in contrast to evil. Therefore, there have been and are evil shepherds. Such dark or evil “shepherds” give the illusion that they care for the sheep but they are deceptive and self-serving. Witness Assad of Syria who gassed children of his own country. In sharp contrast, Jesus is Good because he has poured out his life for his sheep, not once but twice. The incarnation is the beginning of His self-emptying. Then this “kenosis”, a complete giving of self is complete at Calvary. Jesus is not only intelligent, but also wise. Jesus who is God is all wise, logical, yes, all-knowing. Jesus, I trust in You is the simple yet powerful teaching of Sister and Saint Faustina. Jesus
is worthy of our trust because his motive is not self-serving, his motive is sincere. There is no flaw in him. Therefore, when we encounter the Good Shepherd at prayer, we know that he will lead us to every good fruit of the Spirit: Peace, joy, kindness, goodness, (Galatians 5:22-23).
God bless you. Father Gerlach
54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations ~ May 7, 2017 Pope Francis reflects on the missionary dimension of our Christian calling.
The Holy Father says, “commitment to mission is not something added on to the Christian life as a kind of decoration, but is instead an essential element of faith itself. A relationship with the Lord, entails being sent out into the world as prophets of his word and witnesses of his love. Even if at times when
we are conscious of our weaknesses and tempted to discouragement.” Pope Francis underlines, “we need to turn to God with confidence, by virtue of baptism, every Christian is a ‘Christopher,’ a bearer of Christ, to his brothers and sisters." Pope Francis’s message is divided in three parts: “Jesus is anointed by the Spirit and sent to be a missionary disciple means to share actively in the mission of Christ.” “Jesus is at our side every step of the way, the questions lurking in human hearts and the real challenges of life can make us feel bewildered, inadequate and hopeless. If we contemplate the risen Jesus walking alongside the disciples of Emmaus we can be filled with new confidence." “Jesus makes the seed grow, it is important to let the Gospel teach us the way of proclamation. The seed of the Kingdom, however tiny, unseen and at times insignificant, silently continues to grow, thanks to God’s tireless activity.” The Holy Father concludes, “there can be no promotion of vocations or Christian mission apart from constant contemplative prayer and I encourage this kind of profound friendship with the Lord, above all for the sake of imploring from on high new vocations to the priesthood and the consecrated life.”
