Dear friends at St. Louise: This Sunday, May 30, is Trinity Sunday, on which the Church celebrates the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the three Persons of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Trinity Sunday is an appropriate day also to consider the Catholic understanding of the human person. Catholic teaching affirms that our human bodies are in fact temples – dwelling places – of the Holy Spirit, among other things. What are those other things? We as human persons are on a life-long journey of discovery, in part to come to a deeper understanding of who we are. For the majority of people in the Western World, that discovery of “who we are” is largely, if not exclusively, focused on the individual. For believers and for Catholic Christians in particular, the discovery certainly includes the person and how the individual comes to truly understand himself or herself to be. And in the Catholic viewpoint, the individual comes to a full understanding of who they are in the context of relationship. It begins with our relationship with God, the source of all that is; out of that relationship comes the community: our families, our societies, and the Church. God calls each individual to a deep personal relationship with Him – a relationship that will lead each of us to a deeper desire to respect the dignity of every person, and a deeper commitment to the community of the Church and the human family. In Scripture the human person, in all the fullness of what it means to be a person – body and soul/spirit – begins to be defined in Genesis. Through the narrative of a creation story, people come to the awareness that God made us, male and female, in God’s own image and likeness (Genesis 1:27). From this teaching flows the sacredness and dignity of every human life from its natural beginning to its natural end. Being “made in God’s own image and likeness” places us in a special relationship with creation and the creator. Within that relationship, we hold that God created us to be “a priestly people.” What does this mean? The role of a priest (in any religious context) is to offer to and intercede with the divine on behalf of others. Bishop Robert Barron explains it this way: the intention of the author of Genesis is to demonstrate that creation was not made to be an object of worship, but a means by which to offer worship to God. In the time and place in which our creation story took shape, human cultures worshiped different gods: the god of water, sun, earth, etc. By placing creation in its proper context, God in the creation story is ordering things towards their correct relationship. Barron notes that creation comes from the hand of the creator in an orderly and harmonious way. “Sun, moon, planets, stars, the earth itself, animals . . . come into existence as a sort of liturgical procession... It is of crucial importance that the final element of the parade—like the last figure in a liturgical procession—is the human being.” Bishop Barron goes on to say that our true meaning as human persons – as “a priestly people” – is found in offering praise to God on behalf of all creation. Fr. Gary’s article continues on page 3...

Queridos Amigos de Sta. Luisa:

...Fr. Gary’s article continued

Genesis gives us another insight into the human person through the narra-tive of the Fall of Adam and Eve. That story shows the loss of our priestly identity; our relationship with God and creation easily becomes disordered through sin. Sin is when, in one form or another, we worship the ego in-stead of God or we fail to see the dignity of the human person. And the whole story of salvation is God preparing humanity to return to right rela-tionship with God and creation through a covenant. This covenant began with Abraham and his descendants, the people of Israel, the ones chosen to bring about this message. A new form of worship of God (not of any created thing) emerges out of this covenant, which comes into being on Mt. Zion, a temple that symbolized the whole world. However, Israel is not able to live up fully to God’s call – and so God promises through the prophets that a Messiah will come. Jesus is the one who comes to “cleanse the temple” by the perfect offering he makes – as the one true high priest – on the cross. Jesus is the one who restores us to who we are called to be: a priestly people of God. I invite you to go deeper. Read the article by Bishop Barron on Knowing Who We Are https://www.wordonfire.org/resources/article/knowing-who-we-are-knowing-what-we-are-supposed-to-do/5287/. There is also a good article on what it means to be a priestly people https://breakinginthehabit.org/2016/04/22/a-priestly-people/.

Next week: The Catholic understanding of conscience formation and “accompaniment” in a pluralist age. With my prayers, Fr. Gary Zender p.s. On June 1 our parish will welcome seminarian Chad Hill. · Non-Catholics who want to find out more about the Catholic faith; · Those who have not been baptized and want to become Catholic; · Those who were baptized in a Protestant church and want to become Catholic; · Those who were baptized Catholics as infants but did not complete formation and the sacraments of Confirmation or First
