Dear Parents and Students
This coming holiday period is a popular me for families in the school to travel and many do so overseas. These holidays we have one group of students travelling to Japan, with Ms Hada‐Baxter and Mrs Waite, and another group “Trekking for Change” in Central Australia, with Mrs Diane Hanson and myself. I thus offer this prayer for all travellers hoping that each traveller, on each journey, might be enriched and blessed with the awakening of each new dawn along the way.

In all our travelling,
Lord, may it be your footsteps
in which we place our feet.
Yours, Lord is the Glory
in everything I see;
a country scene,
mountain stream,
sunrise, sunset, rain and
snow.
Yours, Lord is the Glory
wherever I might go.
Yours, Lord is the Glory
in everything I hear;
a roaring sea;
bumblebee,
laughter, loving, a tender
poem.
Yours, Lord is the Glory
wherever I might go.
Yours, Lord is the Glory
in everything I feel;
a special place,
warm embrace,
accepted, helped to become whole.

Wxutà|Çz axãá Last Thursday saw the end of the fourth round of QDU debates. It was a fantastic way for Loreto to finish, with ten wins and two losses. Well done to everyone! At the end of the rounds, it appears we may have seven out of twelve teams going through to the finals. That is fantastic! Of the five remaining teams, each team had two wins out of four. All the girls should feel very proud as these are the best results we have had for a number of years. Two teams had a perfect score of four wins and they are 10.1 (coached by Mrs Radvan) and 8.1 (coached by Mr McKinlay). The teams with three wins are 12.1 (Mr Elsworthy), 11.2 (Mrs Heathcote), 9.1( Mrs Carla Wood), 9.2 (Mrs Goldney) and 8.4 (Mrs Hedemann). We thank coaches and helpers: Mrs Megan Stannard, Sophia Markey-Towler, Mrs Cathy O’Donoghue, Mrs Sonia Hereth and Ms Kimberley Lennon. Your time, effort and expertise are truly valued. Thank you! News of rounds and topics for the finals will be advertised as soon as we hear from QDU. I wish all debaters a relaxing holiday. Mrs Rosemary O’Neill - Debating Coordinator
_tÇzâtzx WxÑtÜàÅxÇàaxãá Japanese Trip
We wish Hada Sensei, Mrs Waite and twelve of the students from the Year 10, 11 and 12 Japanese classes a safe trip as they make their way to Japan this Thursday. The girls will spend a week staying with families from our sister school, Kanagawa Gakuen, in Yokohama. Then the group will enjoy seven days travelling around the country and taking in the sights in Hiroshima, Kyoto, Takayama and Tokyo. We thank Hada Sensei and Mrs Waite for all their hard work in preparing the girls for the trip and we look forward to hearing all about your adventures next term.
French Trip It is not too long until the departure of the French Trip in November. Parents are reminded that a $1200 payment is due to be made at the end of this week. This amount will be deducted from your credit cards on Friday 22nd June. Louise Tilly, Languages Coordinator

With only four more sleeps until the Northern Territory Real Life Challenge, the girls are eagerly awaiting their early Saturday morning departure. A sausage sizzle was held on Saturday at Woolworths Coorparoo to contribute to the ongoing fundraising for the ACCF. A total of $400 was raised on the day, which is great. A huge thank you to the teachers and students who helped on the day as well as the number of people who came to support the girls, including staff, students and family. We would also like to thank Woolworths for supplying the cooking equipment and thank you to both State MP Ian Kaye and Local MP Ian Mckenzie, for dropping in to show their support for us. Don’t forget, if you would like to make a donation to our “EveryDay Heroes Page”; it’s not too late and every donation over $2.00 is tax deductible. c 9 Y axãá Denim and Lace Dinner Dance A wonderful evening of dining and dancing was had by all at the Dinner Dance. Obviously the evening took a lot of organisation and planning and the Dinner Dance Committee, capably led by Mary Favios, is to be congratulated for their achievements in making the evening such a success. We thank them for all their hard work and efforts! There were some lucky prize winners on the night and the list is printed below. To all those who donated prizes, thank you so much! We are grateful for your help. Thank you parents (and friends) for selling these raffle tickets, your support was much appreciated. Proceeds will go towards the installation of the Drop Down sports curtain in the Mary Ward Centre. Please see the attached list at the back of the newsletter for list of prize winners. We are also grateful to our sponsors for their generous donations and support. The evening could not have been as successful without their help. Please support them, in turn. Thank you very much to the following sponsors:

fà i|ÇvxÇà wx ctâÄ axãá We are coming to the end of another term of St Vinnies work. Our members set up the soup drive for the St Vincent de Paul Family Support Centre at Inala. This is still ongoing. Another donation, following an earlier one, will go the Centre to keep families in their homes especially during Winter time. Many members from different year levels visited and assisted at the Nursery Road State Special School. I received wonderful praise of the girls’ efforts there. Thanks to the members who worked our stall on Mission Day. That was most successful as a fund raiser as were the Sweet Stalls members or-ganised with great success. Well done, Executive! Some of our Board members skyped to Timorese teachers of English in Dili. They asked our members if we would supply some reading books in English for a pre-school on Atauro Island off Dili. This is a very poor region. Thanks to the generosity of Rotary at their local book sale we have a shipment ready to go. It appears at this stage that San Sisto College may be able to assist us as they take a student contingent to Timor Leste after the June holidays. It has been a busy term and productive one for our members. Thanks to all those in the Loreto community who have assisted our efforts in this most fundamental of Christian outreaches to those who sometimes need a hand up in life. God bless and have a relaxing break for all members. Bill Kenny - Coordinator

Which year of the 1950s saw: the Hungarian Revolution begin, the Suez Crisis develop, Elvis Presley first enter the US Charts with Heartbreak Hotel, Grace Kelly become Princess consort of Monaco, and the Eurovision Song Contest held for the first time? If you know the answer to this question then you should be attending the Loreto Trivia Night on Saturday 4 August. Even if you don’t know the answer, come along anyway to what is always a great night for both students and parents. Simply book your ticket on www.trybooking.com/bmua. You can then organise a group of 8 - 10 friends to sit together OR simply turn up. Arrive at 7pm to organise and decorate your table. Netball Draw for Round 6: Wednesday 18 July
Netball Reports - Results Round 5:
Junior A – The Loreto girls looked strong on court and played well in the first quarter. Unfortunately the opposition, Mt St Michael’s, showed their true colours in the second half. The girls were only seven points behind in the 3rd quarter with Jessica Galpin shooting superbly. The game finished with Mt St Michael’s 24 and Loreto 13. The girls have demonstrated an improvement in their game play from the start of the competition. Coach: Clare Gill
Junior B - An unfortunate loss for the girls this week against St Rita's, 17 - 13. The game at times was tough yet the girls kept their heads held high and fought to the end with such sportsmanship. Everyone worked very hard this week to both get the ball down the court to the shooters and in defence to regain possession. Player of the match goes to Beth Kassulke for her determination and persistence when put in as a defense for the first time! I'm very proud of your great attitudes this week, girls. Coach: Josie Woolaston
Junior C – Loreto were defeated by St Rita’s College 18 - 2. The game was a tough one, with the ball only entering our goal circle less than a handful of times in the first half. Throughout the season thus far, Gabrielle Beiers has been consistent in her energetic leading for the ball, which helps the team, especially in heavy traffic! The girls are to be commended on their great attitude, despite the loss. Coach: Mrs Gold

Junior D - Coming into the fifth game undefeated, the girls had an increased amount of energy and determination and this was proven as they won against Mt St Michael’s 19 - 14. The girls played another exceptional game, with all defenders never giving up as well as the attacking side going for every ball they could. Although the girls are playing on grass courts with small shooting hoops, no excuses are made and the girls keep on playing. Special mention must go to Maddy for her strong defence and to Nicole and Anna for their beautiful shooting in the circle. The girls continue to amaze me and I couldn't have asked to have coached a better or more determined team. Coach: Hannah Meecham
Intermediate A - The girls won 18 - 9 against Mt St Michael’s 2. Our team started strongly from the first whistle and had a comfortable lead heading into the second half of the game. Sarah Bryant played well for the team as centre for a full game creating many options down the court and feeding the ball well into our shooters. Coach: Courtney Milne
Intermediate B1 - Although the team lost 30 -16, a solid effort was put in by all of the girls. A bit of a slow start let Mary MacKillop put a few quick goals on us, but the team brought it back to even by the end of the second quarter. A special mention must go to Prue Hempel for her consistency in both attack and defence, and Maddy Knudsen for her work in attack. Looking to our next game! Coach: Kate Mullins
Intermediate B2 - Had their best week yet, defeating Brigidine, 18 - 10. This was the first week playing on a grass court and the team handled the different conditions extremely well. All girls played a fantastic game however the player of the match this week was Greta Carlson. Greta shot with great accuracy and moved around the circle with complete ease. I am really proud of the team as they are really listening to my advice and are improving with each game. I look forward to seeing them improving even further throughout the remainder of the competition. Coach: Emma Macleod
Intermediate D - Defeated Our Lady’s College 36 - 0. Another fantastic game from the team. All girls played well with multiple leads to many balls. The defense end were particularly impressive keeping the opposition scoreless. Coach: Briony Logan
Intermediate C and Intermediate E - BYE Open A - Unfortunately Mt St Michael’s did not have enough players to take the court so had to forfeit to us. We did have a scratch game sharing players and the girls took the opportunity to have some fun with students from another school. The MSM teacher commented on what friendly girls we were. This team always finds a way to make me proud. Coach: Meg Logan
Open B - Lost to Lourdes Hill in a hard fought game. We were level peg up till half time and then in the third quarter a few errors and bad passes crept back into our game to see us down by eight goals. In the last quarter we came back hard again but not enough to take the win. The final score was 24 - 15. Well played in defence Mary-Kate and Eloise. Great shooting by Brittany and Chiara. Keep up the training over the holidays so we can come back strong for our first game after the break. Coach: Karen Holahan Open C - Another rewarding effort by the girls this week to claim another victory. Despite not training for the past two weeks, Loreto demonstrated great skills and ball handling throughout the game showing the girls’ determination to develop as a team. Special mention to Maddy Blanchfield for her tight one on one defence and commitment to the ball. Coach: Larissa Hughes
ATHLETICS Loreto College Athletics Carnival A reminder that students will be attending the Interhouse carnival on Friday 22nd June at the University of Queensland track. This is the last interhouse sporting event for the year and attendance is expected as for a normal school day. As students are there to support their house and participate in events, magazines, I pod players, MP3 players and the like are NOT permitted. Students are to wear correct school sports uniform including normal sports runners and cap and can change into house colours once they arrive at school. Students will travel to and from the carnival by bus and will receive their reports when they return to school in the afternoon. If any student is not able to be here on Friday 22nd June, her report will be posted home. Students who are unable to participate for medical reasons are to see Ms Carty with a note prior to the carnival date and will be issued with a job on the day. There will be limited canteen facilities but it is strongly advised that each student brings her own lunch. Student should ensure they have a Loreto Sports hat, sunscreen and water bottle. Students are asked to ensure that they come prepared for potentially overcast and windy weather conditions. Students should have warm clothes (Loreto Jumper), spare shoes, socks and shirt, rain jacket and/or umbrella. The girls who are competing in the 1500m event will need to be at school by 8.00am to catch the bus to the UQ track. Helen Carty - Deputy Principal – Pastoral Care

Pre-carnival Field Events in Shot Put and High Jump The Shot put and High jump events will be held at school prior to the carnival. We do not have enough time or space for these events on the day. Students competing must be in correct PE uniform including cap and shoes. We encourage all girls to participate and earn points for their house. Year 12 Shot Put and High Jump will be on Thursday 21 June period 3 & 4. Meg Stevens - Director of Sport
Soccer There will be no soccer games this week. Round 6 will take place on Wednesday 18th July, the first week back. Chris Jones - Soccer Coordinator
Results from Round 5:
Junior B Soccer Played Our Lady’s College Junior B’s. It was a close game with the final result being 1 - 0 in favour of Our Lady’s College. The Loreto girls defended well as a team but were just as effective in attack. Good work to Caitlin O’Hanlon who played a great game in defence. Nick Laidlaw - Coach
Open B San Sisto defeated Loreto 3 -1 at Bayside. Brilliant effort from everyone on the field this week, holding San Sisto to a 2- 0 lead till half time. We came back strongly in the second half, bringing the score to 2 - 1. San Sisto scored a great goal from 30 yards to bring the score to 3 - 1. Girls dug in deep and the score remained at 3 - 1. Michael Kelly - Coach
Hockey Result Rd 5: Open One We were set a challenge this week, coming up against the Mt St Michael’s open A team while battling exam fatigue and illness. The match was fiercely fought at a high pace with some great displays of stick-work and positional play. Leah Carey kindly stepped in from our Open B team to make up our squad of eleven and her contribution to the game was certainly significant. She bagged a fantastic goal after rushing in from the left side of the circle and beating several players to get a shot away. Sandy “the Smiling Assassin” Vo was the thorn in the side of the MSM attack, constantly executing aggressive tackles and harassing them from one end of the pitch to the other. Amber “the Juggernaut” Schmidt made some almost unstoppable runs up the right flank and fed well off the sharp passes from Lauren Welch and Isabelle Mowen. Laura Felchow had a fantastic afternoon guarding the box and deflecting many a shot off into safety. She even launched one of her pads at the attacking players as a cunning distraction at one point. Emma Currey bolstered our defence well in the halves with some tenacious marking and great intuitive blocking of the opposition’s free hits. Ellen Carey, as always, was the rock at the back of our defensive line, marshalling the troops and clearing the ball well up to the eager sticks of Coco Beylot and Larissa Claridge on the prowl up high. Georgia McAuliffe supported Ellen to great effect with great chasing and tackling. In the end, we encountered our first defeat for the season, with a 6 -1 scoreline despite a valiant effort from all of the Loreto girls. I am confident that this is just a passing form slump due to the demands of end of term and we will be back to full strength in the next round. Matt Lourigan - Coach
Grass Hockey Everyone can have a break from Hockey as there is no more training or games until the first week of next term. Training starts on the first Monday afternoon for Open One and Tuesday morning for Open Two. Anyone who cannot make their respective training is to organize to go to the alternative time. There will be a game on the Wednesday for both teams in the first week.
Turf Hockey At this stage there is still no news of any future turf competition to replace the NAB competition. We will wait over the break before making any further decision.
Alan Lane-Richardson - Hockey Coordinator

A change of uniform and seasons has given 16 year old Ellen Dunphy a new lease on life at Loreto. Hailing from the Emerald Isle, Ellen is completing her secondary education at Loreto College Foxrock, Dublin, Ireland, and has been on exchange at Coorparoo since the beginning of Term 2.
She has embraced everything ‘Aussie’ from the beaches to Westfield during her Australian Loreto exchange. The idea originally sparked Ellen’s interest when a group from Loreto Ballarat visited Loreto Foxrock in April, 2011.
Ellen has adapted exceptionally well to her Australian life and has been a beautiful addition to the Year 10 cohort. Ellen has been involved with Mission Day 2012, the Careers Expo, Year 10 Retreat, countless social justice and fundraising events and much more.
Ellen said her experience has surpassed all expectations. “Everyone’s been very welcoming and kind. The people are lovely, always happy and smiling. This has been a life changing experience and I have made some great friends who I know I will have for life.”
Ellen will be greatly missed by the Loreto Coorparoo community, especially her Year 10 friends and teachers and her host families, the Dibley’s and Carlson’s.
Sophie (Dibley) and Greta (Carlson) said the exchange has been like having another sister in the family and they have loved getting to know Ellen and learning more about the Irish culture through Ellen’s colourful stories. The girls also have plans to meet up with Ellen in Europe later this year and in 2015.
The College wishes to thank both the Dibley and Carlson families for their generosity and hospitality, ensuring Ellen’s exchange dream became a reality.
The Loreto Coorparoo community wish Ellen all the best with her senior years in Dublin. We look forward to seeing her again next June when the Dunphy family will return to Brisbane for a family holiday, and, of course, to watch the Rugby Union. All the best, Ellen.
