MY RACORWith thousands o readers, there has to be at least two people who

are interested in tractor articles. So I need just one person besidesmysel and we are good to go!!Te workhorse o my small tractor eet, is my second oldest, but

at 32 years old, it is still going strong and is my go-to tractor orthe heavy work. Its the one that ventures o o the woods road toblaze new trails and to haul out wood. It is also the only tractorthat has the space to carry the many items needed or the hard

jobs.My chainsaw sits in a case out on one rear ender, while an axe

sits inside the cabin beside my seat. Outside on the loader, I havea bracket to hold my peavey or moving logs or trees around ineeded. Until I nd a logging winch or wench, I have a 20 plusoot hunk o chain hanging o brackets on the other side o theloader. Also hanging o the loader are lopping shears or trimming

branches (instead o using chainsaw), a two-ton manual winch orhauling me (hopeully) out o places I shouldnt have been, and ashovel (or sel burial i nothing else works)!!

Inside the cab, I have a hard hat with ace shield, that I shoulduse but never do, two or three pairs o gloves, a small maul-likehammer (protection rom coyotes and angry wie), numerousbolts and pins, tools and a airly short eight oot chain, along withgas and chain oil or my chainsaw.

Te tractor started out lie weighing a little over 4,000 lbs butnow weighs somewhere in the vicinity o 120,000 lbs and canbarely move (just kidding)!!It is amazing, when I think about it. With all o the problems in the

world both near and ar, why would I write about a tractor?? Welor one thing, tractors arent depressing!! One o the great things

about our publications is that with possibly a rare exception, allo the news is positive. And believe me, that can be very hard tond today. While there is nothing wrong with getting the realnews on lie, a continuous barrage o bad news is depressing andso people begin to eel hopeless about the uture and that there isnothing that can be done.

Fortunately, our publications are just loaded with people andorganizations being very busy trying to solve at least some o theworlds problems and believe me, that is a good thing. Changealmost never occurs out o depression, but rather hope andinspiration. 800

BLOSSOMS ABOUND,YE MORE COULD BE FOUND.

We have enjoyed perect weather orgardening this spring with abundant rainthat has made transplanting an absolutebreeze, the plants changed locationswithout missing a beat, it was so perectthat I moved things that were actuallyblooming and they continued to thrive.

Along with all the masses o blooms, (asis the case with most o lies privileges),comes a measure o responsibility, i one ishoping to take advantage o these blessings

a little care can extend the blooming period. Most perennialshave a limited time or blooming but a ew tricks can keep them

going or their whole bloom expectancy.Iris, particularly the German Bearded type, will be ar moreproductive i the spent blossoms are careully removed allowingor the second bud that is joined to it to mature; i the spentbloom is le on the stem, particularly in the wet weather, it canrot the bud; by resting the index nger below the blossom andsliding the thumb between it and the bud, the old bloom canbe snapped o, taking the seed pod with it and the bud willblossom. Dead heading is really the most important job that wecan do rom now until summers end, peonies will have brokenorth in all their splendor and once the rst blossoms begin toshed their petals its time to cut them o just above the smallerbuds that have ormed and you will have a whole new owerproduction. Admittedly these will be slightly smaller than the

rst burst o colour, but it prolongs their blooming time byanother couple o weeks. Once all the buds have bloomed it iswise to trim the plants back, the oliage is quite attractive andas the season progresses will turn beautiul shades o crimson.

Annuals are quite another matter and this is where thedeadheading really pays dividends. Mother Natures wholepurpose or these stalwarts o the owerbeds is that theyproduce seed, which will insure the continuation o the species.By cutting o the spent blooms beore they can produce seed, the plant is orced into producing owers until the mission isaccomplished. Tis is great good news or us and in most casesthe yield just gets bigger and better with continuous bloominguntil the all rost have their unwelcome way with them.

Teres a great selection o hardy roses on the market and itis well to read the labels, some just bloom once, over a periodo a week or two whilst others are repeat bloomers and willbloom airly consistently until the rst heavy rost, towardthe end o their production its nice to allow the rose hips toorm, you might nd some seedlings emerging and they willcertainly provide welcome ood or the bids during the winter.Dead heading the re-bloomers is important or the very reasonsmentioned above regarding annuals. So, as you wander orth with your morning coee, appreciating

all the beauty that surrounds you, keep an eye out or those gemsthat need this type o attention and oer a song o praise or theblessings o each bloom. 805

CLOSE ENCOUNERS OF HE BUZZINg KIND!

One o the things I miss rom my old house is the lilac hedge thatran the width o the ront lawn. Te hedge was there or likely tenyears beore it nally had a single bloom, but once it got startedit was thereaer spectacular. I do have our lilacs planted at thenew house, one white, two purple and one French, but nonehave gotten big enough to bloom. We also have an immaturehedge along the parking lot at the ofce, which has now gottenestablished enough to have a ew blooms on it. One o the lovelywarm sunny days at the beginning o June I sauntered over tosmell the roses . . . err lilacs. Ahhhh . . . heavenly. I did not gettoo close as I was wearing dress sandals and a long sweepingskirt, but with lilacs you do not need your nose buried in theblooms to enjoy the scent!

It was the end o the work day, so I was heading or my car to gohome, but took time to chat or a ew minutes with a co-workerin the parking lot. Hopped into the car and tossed my bags onthe passenger seat, and suddenly elt an OUCH! And anotherOUCH. Something was stabbing me in the upper thigh! And itwas buzzing! Tis is not good!Out o the car! O comes the blazer, shake out the shirt in case

it is traveling upwards, still buzzing. Shake the lovely long oralskirt . . . louder buzzing. He (o course its a he) is under theskirt somewhere! Shaking it wasnt getting me anyway. Pleaserecall I am standing in the parking lot o our ofce property inHampton. Dropping my drawers . . . err skirt . . . is likely tonet me an arrest or indecent exposure. I boot it to the ofceto encounter a co-worker o the male persuasion just packing

up to go. He was unceremoniously pushed out the door witha Get out! I need to strip! and the door locked behind him.O with the skirt, o with the slip . . . the buzzing is now onthe oor, obviously in the olds o the skirt. Since I was down tomy skivvies by then, it is ortunate there was another co-workerpresent (emale) who careully bundled the skirt and hornetoutdoors and shook him loose. Whew . . .When you go in search of honey you must expect to be stung by

    bees.~ Joseph Joubert. 801
