WELCOME to the Northwest Dental Expo 2019, Experience. This year’s NWDE chair, Dr. DominikaBereznicki-Szyling and the NWDE planning committee have been working tirelessly to bring you notonly exciting speakers, but a new component, or experience: two hands-on courses. Come find anymember of your EDDS executive, introduce yourself, and let us know what you think of the new addi-tion to our show!
Be sure to make time to stop by the trade floor to meet our sponsors and join us for our lunch breakand end-of-day raffle draws. We once again invite you to stick around after the show for the KingswayOral and Maxillofacial Surgery wind-up party. Enjoy some food, drinks, and catch up with colleagues.
Finally, I would like to thank our distinguished partners and sponsors, and congratulate Robyn Ross, our executive assistant, Dr. Dominika Bereznicki-Szyling, the NWDE 2019 chair, and the entire EDDS exec-utive for their hard work in planning another successful Northwest Dental Expo.
Dr. Rebecca AntelEDDS President
WELCOME to the 2019 Northwest Dental Exposition! The Northwest Dental Expo (NWDE) is organizedby dental professionals for dental professionals. I am proud to have been selected as the chair of theNWDE 2019.
This year the NWDE was planned by a committee, which was made up of two dentists besides myself:Dr. Brian Lam and Dr. Brian Wong. I would like to thank them for volunteering their time and for theirinnovative ideas. We could not have put this together without the invaluable help from Robyn Ross,EDDS central office.
For #NWDE2019, the committee thought we would try something new by offering two hands-on lectures. Please let us know how you like the changes we have made. We are always trying to improve and inno-vate, and are always open to suggestions.
We are forever thankful for our sponsors and exhibitors. Without their donations, this expo wouldnot be what it is today. We are pleased to announce that Kingsway Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery isonce again sponsoring the seventh-annual wind-up party which will be held at the exhibition hall from5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be music, food, and a prize draw. The coffee stations are sponsored bySouth Edmonton Oral Surgery and breakfast is sponsored by Sinclair. Thank you to all those whodonated the door prizes.
We hope you enjoy the day and experience all that the #NWDE2019 has to offer, be it cameraderie, expanding your knowledge, or enjoying the trade show floor.

SPEAKERS
2017 World Workshop of Periodontitis andPeri-Implant Diseases and ConditionsDr. Teresa Debevc
This workshop, which was supported by both the American Academy ofPeriodontology and the European Federation of Periodontology, provided acomprehensive update of the previous disease classification established in1999. The highlights from these proceedings include a recategorization of vari-ous forms of periodontitis, the development of a novel staging and grading ofperiodontitis and the inaugural classification for peri-implant diseases andconditions. This presentation will concentrate on the changes in the forms of periodontitis, as well as the staging and grad-ing system of periodontitis. This system provides a structure for treatment planning and monitoring a patient’s periodontaltherapy, as well as a new paradigm in periodontology as it makes way for a more personalized approach to patient care.

MORNING
The Silent Killer: Understanding and Address-ing the Missing Link in Today’s PeriodontalTherapy ProgramMs. Jo-Anne Jones, RDH
The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) redefined periodontal diseasefrom an infectious disease to an inflammatory disease impacting the currentguidelines. Is your practice compliant with the newly published JADA Guidelinesfor evidence–based clinical recommendations in the non-surgical treatment ofchronic periodontitis?
We have the ability to change lives through the power of our message andthe science of our treatment. If the knowledge shared is put into practice, it will change not only the way we treat periodon-tal disease, but also the outcomes we can expect to receive. It’s time to put our words into action, and recognize our role inreducing inflammation and sustaining overall health for our dental patients. Discover the missing link in your periodontalprogram, and take your practice and your patient’s health to the next level. Upon completion of the course, the participantwill be able to:• Elevate understanding and treatment of periodontal disease as an inflammatory disease capable of initiating disease states
within the body;• Understand and apply the most current JADA Guidelines and treatment modalities into clinical practice and treatment
delivery to improve clinical outcomes and ensure best practices;• Empower the patient through the provision of resources to understand the oral systemic connection and elevate treatment
acceptance.
AFTERNOON
Social Trends and Behaviours: The Impact on Oral HealthMs. Jo-Anne Jones, RDH
At the centre of today’s health promotion strategies is the improvement and maintenance of oral health. A number of currentsocial and sexual behaviours are placing our dental hygiene client at risk. E-cigarette use and vaping among youth is now asignificant public health concern. The obsession of escalating sugar in daily diets, the combination of alcohol and energydrinks, and the growing incidence of HPV-associated oral and oropharyngeal cancers are just a few of the trends that areimpacting the health of today’s dental hygiene client. Oil pulling, charcoal whitening, and other trends will be reviewed, sepa-rating myth from evidence-based science. The incorporation of risk assessment and evidence-based clinical guidelines intotoday’s dental practice is both exciting and rewarding, replacing routine dental care with client-centered risk management anddisease prevention. Learning outcomes:• Explore trends in lifestyle that are having an adverse effect on the health and well-being of today’s dental hygiene client;• Ensure your dental hygiene practice is following the most current clinical guidelines for treatment and disease management;• Incorporate effective chairside and self-care treatment protocols to pro-actively address the impact of current societal
trends;• Apply a developed risk assessment program complemented by evidence-based protocols immediately into your practice.

It’s human nature to be curious about disasters. If someone becomes sick, we want to know whatdisease they have. If there is an accident, we
want to know how it happened. We want to knowthese things because we are looking for ways toprevent these things from happening to us.
I once had a wedding planner tell me that thevery first question she is always asked is, “Whatare your worst wedding day horror stories?”Similarly, I am almost always asked “What is theworst transition, sale or foreclosure you have everdealt with?” Truthfully, I work very hard to makesure our transactions go as smoothly as possiblefor all parties, but there are times when I havebeen engaged a little late in the process and thingsare off the rails. I would like to share with you acautionary tale.
A dentist started out doing everything right. Heworked hard throughout his life to build a verynice, moderate-sized, practice. He engaged myservices to have an appraisal done approximatelyfive years before he planned to transition out of hispractice. This dentist had brought in an associ-ate that he liked and trusted, and his plan was tosell the practice to the associate. He felt they hada very good relationship, and did not feel that anassociate agreement was necessary. The dentistplanned to do a simple private sale betweenhimself and the associate. Unfortunately, whenthe dentist presented the associate with valua-tion, the associate did not want to pay the fullvalue of the clinic and would not negotiate onprice. Without an associate agreement in place, the associate walked out the door and took asmany patients as possible with him.
The dentist now was in the position of needingto find a new associate and try to rebuild the miss-
ing patients. At the same time, the dentist’s wifebecame ill with a long-term debilitating diseaseand the dentist found himself with less and lesstime to be in the clinic. Now he needed an asso-ciate and a locum. In an effort to get control ofthings, he hired a long-time family friend tomanage the front office. Also, during this time, thedentist himself fell ill.
At this point the dentist reached out to me toassist him with selling his clinic. We updated hisappraisal and, through this process, noticed anincrease in staff costs. Through further investi-gation we uncovered fraud in the staff wages andsupply costs. The trusted family friend that hadbeen hired to manage the front office had paidherself more than double what a normal wagewould be and was ordering personal items (suchas televisions) through sundries, supplies, andother categories buried throughout the financials.
In the beginning, this clinic was valued at $1.4million – it sold for $800,000.
Now many of you may say, “This couldn’thappen to me.” I assure you, situations like thishappen far more often than you realize. The keyto protecting yourself is good pre-planning andthe services of professional advisors. We are hereto help!

It is no secret that the world of dentistry mustevolve to address technological advancementsand the demands of modern consumers. A new
partnership model is emerging to face the challenge– Community Dentist Networks – in which manage-ment organizations invest in dental practices tocreate integrated high performing organizationsdedicated to serving their local communities.
What does a partnership model mean fordentists? Doing more of what they love. The Community Dentist Network PartnershipModel provides an opportunity for dentist ownersto embrace the clinical side of dentistry knowingthat a strong partner will drive business goals.Formulation and delivery of comprehensive treat-ment plans requires focus and ongoing attentionto clinical advancements. Individual patient carerequires the time to build relationships and trust.Having a partner that understands this and bringsan equivalent excellence in business is a must.Strategic partners like 123Dentist can provideoperational systems, human resources support, industry relationships, buying power, and market-ing communications that complement and extendthe clinical side of any practice.
What does a partnership model mean for dentalpractice management? Stronger teams. The support of a partner enables investment inrecurring training for the entire clinical team, lead-ing to fulfilling careers with ample growth oppor-tunities. But this is only one benefit of partneringwith an organization like 123Dentist. Communityis another. With direct access to leaders in thefield and education platforms like the 123DentistInstitute, dentists, specialists and hygienists canleverage combined influence, resources andconnections, share best practices and problem-solve in real time.
What does a partnership model mean forpatients? Better care.Patients are increasingly aware of the health andlifestyle benefits of dentistry. Innovations suchas Invisalign, dental implants, one-visit crowns, sedation, and laser dentistry are widely adver-tised. Practices that partner with managementorganizations like 123Dentist can readily accessthe latest equipment and training from industrypartners to deliver these advanced solutions. Thismeans one-stop delivery of the very best functionand aesthetics for all patients.
Tomorrow’s patients will require dental practicesto offer a broad scope of transformative procedureswith excellent customer service. In addition, theywill seek rapid access, convenience, and high qual-ity. Moving to a Community Dentist NetworkPartnership Model with organizations like123Dentist means better-equipped offices, morehighly trained teams, and streamlined professionaloperational systems - all critical to position prac-tices to meet the needs of patients for years to come.
In my vision the Future of Dentistry must involveinvestment in partnerships that achieve commongoals ... literally: “Dentists supporting dentists tosatisfy the ongoing needs of patients and theircommunities.” My daily commitment is to accel-erate this vision.
123Dentist is a made-in-Canada solution that offersdentists at all career stages asimple, highly-effective alter-native to practice ownership.123Dentist invests in the struc-ture, marketing, and manage-

Health care has entered a time when manyfactors are contributing to the emergence ofthe “perfect storm”. While we struggle with
health-care associated infections (HAIs) in vari-ous health-care facilities, we do so with an expand-ing population of the more vulnerable agingpatients and new emerging pathogens, all the whilefacing increasingly ineffective treatments due toantimicrobial resistance. The need for increasedinfection prevention capability is critical.
One of those capabilities that has been expand-ing is more effective decontamination of hands, surfaces, and items in health-care facilities.Multiple studies have revealed that surfaces andmulti-use devices in these facilities are readilycontaminated with pathogens and opportunisticmicroorganisms (Hota 2004; Boyce 2007; Weber2010; Weber 2013; Sexton 2015). These surfacesfunction as pathogen reservoirs; sources for thespread of HAIs. In fact, Weber, et. al. stated that, “Insome cases, the extent of patient-to-patient trans-mission has been found to be directly proportionalto the level of environmental contamination.Improved cleaning/disinfection of environmentalsurfaces and hand hygiene have been shown toreduce the spread of all of these pathogens.”(Weber 2010). It has also been shown thatpathogens form biofilms on surfaces enabling themto multiply, share antibiotic resistance encodedgenes with other bacteria, and survive for longperiods within their protective biofilm matrix(Vickery 2012; Yezli 2012; Otter 2015).
So, what can we do about this perfect storm? One such company is battling the storm head on,and answers questions that need to be asked whenresearching the best disinfectant to meet yourneeds.
1) What pathogens is the disinfectant effective infighting?
2) What is the active ingredients of thedisinfectant?
3) What is the wet contact time required?4) Is wiper sufficiently saturated to cover surface?5) Does the wiper have a sufficient course surface
to be effective on dried organic residue?6) Is the disinfectant an effective cleaner?7) Is it just for flat environmental surfaces?8) Is it safe for acrylic, brass, chrome, copper,
painted surfaces, and plastics?AMRAK Healthcare Canada Inc. is the sole master
