SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

“I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate.”

John 14:15-21 Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings

In next Sunday’s Gospel, (May 24) The Ascension of the Lord, we are told that the eleven disciples go the mountaintop in Galilee, as Jesus had instructed through Mary Magdalene and the other Mary. They see Jesus, and both worship and doubt at the same time. Jesus ap-proaches them and commissions them to baptize and teach, "to make disciples of all nations." It is a task which Jesus had previously prepared his disciples for; recall that Jesus had sent the twelve apostles to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal. However, earlier the Twelve were sent only to the House of Israel; in this Fi-nal Commission, the eleven are told to go to "all na-tions." The mission of Jesus is now to be taken to all people; the task now is to baptize and to teach.

Jesus commissions his disciples to baptize in the name of the Trinity, one of the clearest attestations found in Scripture for baptism in the name of the Trinity. In the Acts of the Apostles and in the Letters of Paul, baptism is more frequently offered "in the name of Jesus."

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Acts 1:1-11: Jesus is taken up to heaven in the pres-ence of the apostles.

Ephesians 1:17-23: God raised Jesus from the dead and seated him at this right hand. Matthew 28:16-20: Jesus charges his disciples to make disciples of all nations and promises to be with them forever.

A Pilgrim’s Progress…. As noted elsewhere in this bulletin, as part of our continued anticipation of the day when restrictions will be lifted and we can again participate in the public celebration of the Holy Eucharist we will be offering expanded opportunities to share in the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the weeks to come. This first Easter gift of the Risen Lord to the Church is a great experience of Grace and Mercy. With gratitude those who have spent the last many months preparing for the Easter Sacraments through our RCIA process, Beth Long, Renia Holley, Dane Church, Shawn Evans, and Steve Conlon will now be able to share in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, be Confirmed, and receive Holy Eucharist. Destiny Garza will be Baptized, Confirmed, and receive the Holy Eucharist. I thank Deacon Gene and Roy Blanchette for leading our RCIA process this year. During your Eucharistic visits you have noticed that our churches have been prepared for anticipated social distancing requirements. Every other pew has been marked off so that while families may sit together others can be at least six feet apart. Our IC Reconciliation Room allows for adequate spacing for face-to-face confessions and the St C church hall kitchen is being used as a temporary Reconciliation Room. Please use the entrance across from the restrooms. Again I express my great gratitude for the continuing generous response of our parishes to the needs of the Church during these times. Your prayerful presence at church before the Blessed Sacrament, your daily rosaries at home, and your material offerings have been amazing. Both of our parishes continue to have material needs during this time (i.e. repairs and maintenance) of course and your generosity helps us to keep reaching out to those who are hurting and will continue to do so in the months to come. In prior times this Thursday was kept as the Ascension. The nine days from “Ascension Thursday’ to Pentecost were the first novena of the Church. Mary and the Apostles prayerfully waited for the promised gift of the Holy Spirit to begin the great

mission of the Church. Let us pray during these days for the coming of God’s Spirit anew among his Church that we may soon return to the full living of our Faith and the Sacramental life. Prayer to the Holy Spirit Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful. And kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you will renew the face of the earth. Lord, By the light of the Holy Spirit You have taught the hearts of your faithful. In the same Spirit Help us to relish what is right. And always rejoice in your consolation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Deo Vindice, fr john

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ “PEACE BE WITH YOU”

Five weeks ago, on the 2nd Sunday of Easter, in John’s Gospel Jesus appeared to his frightened disciples who were “sheltering in place” in the upper room. He breathed on them, they received the Holy Spirit, and Christ gave them the responsibility to forgive our sins. As we continue to anticipate the day when we are al-lowed to return to the public celebration of the Holy Eucharist area parishes are inviting us all to receive the gift of Christ’s peace in the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion. As we prepare our youth for Reconciliation before they receive First Eucharist; as our R.C.I.A. candidates will be sharing in Reconciliation as they complete their initiation; we invite all our parishioners to prepare for the end of our Eucharistic fast by sharing in the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation. To make this more readily possible we will be offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation in our parishes each day usually from 4 PM – 6 PM at least until the end of May. For priests covering more than one parish check the parish bulletin for their daily schedule. We en-courage you to embrace this great gift of God’s Grace and God’s Mercy. Fr. Cumberland, Douglas, and Coles.

EUCHARISTIC EXPOSTION RETURNS JUNE 5TH & 6TH! Our Eucharistic Exposition (the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the monstrance) in anticipation of First Saturday, June 6th will return Friday June 5th at Immaculate Conception. Exposition will begin Friday at 8 A.M. and continue till 4 P.M. It will resume at 8 P.M. and continue till 8 A.M. Saturday A.M. The four hour “gap” is due to a Friday evening wedding. Whether we will be able to conclude with mass on Saturday morning will depend on restrictions in place at that time. Exposition will take place in the nave (the main body of church) which will allow for mandated social distancing. As always, for Exposition to take place at least one person must be signed up to cover every available hour. If restrictions remain as they are now no more than ten people may be in church at any one time. The sign-up sheet for registration is as always next to the Reconciliation Room. I believe our parish (and the world) have received great Graces through our faithful participation in Eucharistic Exposition. I believe we will continue to do so in the days to come.-fr john

The Baby Bottle Blessings fundraiser is the “lifeblood” of our Choices Pregnancy and Health Centers. It attracts more individual donors than any of our other efforts including mail appeals and the fall ban-quet. The Baby Bottles are a tangible sign of a household’s commitment to provide prayerful and mate-rial support to moms and dads trying to make life-giving choices. Each month our four centers (Mattoon, Charleston, Paris, and Casey) offer many client services. Preg-nancy testing, ultrasound, parenting classes, abstinence formation, baby clothes and supplies, and com-passionate counsel to name a few. Immaculate Conception and St. Columcille make these Baby Bottles available throughout the year. In these weeks between Mother’s Day and Father’s Day we invite those who do not have a baby bottle to pick one up in the vestibule and return it to church when full. Change, folding money, and checks made out to the parish all “work.” Unlike the abortion industry our Choices Pregnancy and Health Centers re-ceive no government funding. Nor do we seek it. We want to be able to offer information and services to those we assist with consistent Christian principles and medical ethics. If you would like to help our young people make choices everyone can live with please pick up a bottle in the vestibule or return a gift to the parish indicating it is for Choices. Thank you for your prayers and generosity!
