WELCOME TO THE EIGHTH HAILSHAM FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND CULTURE 2014!Once again we are delighted to offer you a lively ten day programme of diverse and innovative events. Hailsham is an expanding town with an ever increasing population. As the festival organisers we have tried to ensure there is a variety of events which reflect the eclectic mix and ages within our community.

Apart from an extensive art trail, festival highlights include a jazz and rock community choir, film, competitions, poetry, art history, music, dance, live theatre, workshops, children’s sports show and a barn dance. Our multicultural theme this year is India. The festival art exhibition features a vibrant series of paintings based on Indian street life and the nationally acclaimed dance company ‘Bhangracise’ will perform both traditional Indian dance and highly energetic contemporary Bollywood and Bhangra.

We hope you will want to attend some of the exhibitions or performances, please take care to check times and locations.

If you are new to the area and would like to be involved in the festival, please make yourself known at one of the events or contact us through the festival website. If you are a regular visitor we look forward to welcoming you again!

Our thanks to all our many sponsors and supporters, in particular Paul Nunney from Hailsham Pavilion.

As the Conservative MP candidate for Hailsham, it is an honour for me to be opening the Hailsham Festival of Arts and Culture.

The festival showcases the wealth of artistic talent in our vibrant town and this year the programme includes music, literature, art, drama and dance through local and international acts. Not forgetting a host of family events and workshops to keep all ages entertained. We also have the added bonus and buzz of the Tour of Britain, recognising Hailsham as the riders cycle through on Saturday 13th September.

The festival highlights the power of the arts and culture and reminds us, what we each have to offer and what we all have in common. The festival brings us all together in celebration of the varied and wonderful arts and culture across Hailsham.

Festival ExhibitionSpecial OpeningGallery North2 – 4pmAn exhibition of paintings by artist and filmmaker Jeremy Bear entitled ‘My India is Great’

Artist Jeremy Bear was struck by the strangeness of this phrase which he spotted emblazoned across the back of buses in and around the city of Kolkata. It was ambiguous and full of contradictions like the city he was getting to know. In vibrant colour he assembles complex, interwoven layers of old and new, traditional and modern. In these works we see proud celebrations of ritual and religious life and poignant fragments of everyday life.

12 established resident artists will also be exhibiting in the town’s unique 6 room gallery. The display includes a wide variety of photography, painting, printmaking, jewellery and pottery.

This exhibition continues until Saturday October 25th

It is 1942. At the Falcon Hotel, on the Lincolnshire coast, Teddy a young RAF bomber pilot celebrates a reunion with his actress wife Patricia.

Flare Path is a story of love and loyalty, courage and fear. Based on Rattigan’s own experiences as a tail gunner in the RAF during the Second World War, he later reworked Flare Path into a screenplay and in 1954 the re-titled “The Way to the Stars”, starring Michael Redgrave, was released.
