5. For those who have fallen

away from the Church, and for

all who live apart from Christ,

1 Salvation unto us has come

By God's free grace and favor;

Good works cannot avert our doom,

They help and save us never.

Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone,

Who did for all the world atone;

He is our one Redeemer.

2 What God did in His Law demand

And none to Him could render

Caused wrath and woe on ev'ry hand

For man, the vile offender.

Our flesh has not those pure desires

The spirit of the Law requires,

And lost is our condition.

3 It was a false, misleading draem

That God His Law had given

That sinners could themselves

redeem

And by their works gain heaven.

The Law is but a mirror bright

To bring the inbred sin to light

That lurks within our nature.

4 From sin our flesh could not

abstain,

Sin held its sway unceasing;

The task was useless and in vain,

Our guilt was e'er increasing.

None can remove sin's poisoned dart

Or purify our guileful heart--

So deep is our corruption.

5 Yet as the law must be fulfilled

Or we must die despairing,

Christ came and has God's anger

stilled,

Our human nature sharing.

has for us the Law obeyed

And thus His Father's vengeance

stayed

Which over us impended.

6 Since Christ has full atonement

made

And brought to us salvation,

East Christian therefore may be glad

And build on this foundation.

Your grace alone, dear Lord, I plead,

Your death is now my life indeed,

For You have paid my ransom.

7 Let me not doubt, but truly see

Your Word cannot be broken:

Your call rings out, "Come unto Me!"

No falsehood have You spoken.

Baptized into Your precious name,

My faith cannot be put to shame,

And I shall never perish.

8 The Law reveals the guilt of sin

And makes us conscience-stricken;

But then the Gospel enters in

The sinful soul to quicken.

Come to the cross, trust Christ, and

live;

The Law no peace can ever give,

No comfort and no blessing.

9 Faith clings to Jesus' cross alone

And rests in Him unceasing;

And by its fruits true faith is known,

With love and hope increasing.

For faith alone can ustify;

Works serve our neighbor and supply

The proof that faith is living.

10 All blessing, honor, thanks, and

praise

To Father, Son, and Spirit,

The God who saved us by His grace,

All glory to His merit.

O triune God in heav'n above,

Your have revealed Your saving love;

Your blessed name we hallow.

Exodus 17:1-7

Water from the Rock

17 All the congregation of the people of

Israel moved on from the wilderness of

Sin by stages, according to the

commandment of the LORD, and

camped at Rephidim, but there was no

water for the people to drink. 2

Therefore the people quarreled with

Moses and said, ―Give us water to

drink.‖ And Moses said to them, ―Why

do you quarrel with me? Why do you

test the LORD?‖ 3 But the people

thirsted there for water, and the people

grumbled against Moses and said, ―Why

did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill

us and our children and our livestock

with thirst?‖ 4 So Moses cried to the

LORD, ―What shall I do with this

people? They are almost ready to stone

me.‖ 5 And the LORD said to Moses,

―Pass on before the people, taking with

you some of the elders of Israel, and take

in your hand the staff with which you

struck the Nile, and go.6 Behold, I will

stand before you there on the rock at

Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and

water shall come out of it, and the

people will drink.‖ And Moses did so, in

the sight of the elders of Israel. 7 And he

called the name of the place Massah and

Meribah, because of the quarreling of

the people of Israel, and because they

tested the LORD by saying, ―Is the

LORD among us or not?‖

4 Do you not know that in a race all the

runners run, but only one receives the

prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25

Every athlete exercises self-control in all

things. They do it to receive a perishable

wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I

do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one

beating the air. 27 But I discipline my

body and keep it under control, lest after

preaching to others I myself should be

disqualified.

Warning Against Idolatry

10 For I do not want you to be unaware,

brothers, that our fathers were all under

the cloud, and all passed through the sea,

2 and all were baptized into Moses in

the cloud and in the sea, 3 and all ate the

same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the

same spiritual drink. For they drank

from the spiritual Rock that followed

them, and the Rock was Christ. 5

Nevertheless, with most of them God

was not pleased, for they were

overthrown in the wilderness.

Matthew 20:1-16Laborers in the Vineyard20 ―For the kingdom of heaven is like a master of a house who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. 2 After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. 3 And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, 4 and to them he said, ‗You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.‘5 So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. 6 And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, ‗Why do you stand here idle all day?‘ 7 They said to him, ‗Because no one has hired us.‘ He said to them, ‗You go into the vineyard too.‘ 8 And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, ‗Call the laborers and pay them

their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.‘ 9 And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius.10 Now when those hired first came, they thought they would receive more, but each of them also received a denarius. 11 And on receiving it they grumbled at the master of the house, 12 saying, ‗These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.‘13 But he replied to one of them, ‗Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius?14 Take what belongs to you and go. I choose to give to this last worker as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?‘ 16 So the last will be first, and the first last.‖

Psalm 95:1-9Let Us Sing Songs of Praise95 Oh come, let us sing to the LORD;

let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!3 For the LORD is a great God,

and a great King above all gods.4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;

the heights of the mountains are his also.5 The sea is his, for he made it,

and his hands formed the dry land.6 Oh come, let us worship and

bow down;let us kneel before the LORD,

our Maker!7 For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture,

and the sheep of his hand.Today, if you hear his voice,8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,

as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,9 when your fathers put me to the test

and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.

Matthew 20:1–16

Grace Alone

The people of Israel contended with the Lord in the wilderness (Ex. 17:1–7). They were

dissatisfied with His provision. In the same way, the first laborers in the vineyard

complained against the landowner for the wage he provided them (Matt. 20:1–16). They

charged him with being unfair, but in reality he was being generous. For the Lord does not

wish to deal with us on the basis of what we deserve but on the basis of His abounding

grace in Christ. The first—those who rely on their own merits—will be last. ―For they

were overthrown in the wilderness‖ (1 Cor. 10:5). But the last, those who rely on Christ,

will be first. For Christ is the Rock (1 Cor. 9:24–10:5). He is the One who was struck and

from whose side blood and water flowed that we may be cleansed of our sin.

1 Amazing grace--how sweet the sound--That saved a wretch like me!I once was lost but now am found,Was blind, but now I see!

2 The Lord has promised good to me,His Word my hope secures;He will my shield and portion beAs long as life endures.

3 Through many dangers, toils and snares,I have already come;

His grace has brought me safe thus far,His grace will lead me home.

4 Yes, when this flesh and heart shall failAnd mortal life shall cease,Amazing grace shall then prevailIn heaven's joy and peace.

5 When we‘ve been there ten thousand years,Bright shining as the sun,We‘ve no less days to sing God‘s praiseThan when we‘d first begun.

10 ―For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven

and do not return there but water the earth,

making it bring forth and sprout,

giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;

it shall not return to me empty,

instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;

and it shall make a name for the LORD,

an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.‖

2 Corinthians 11:19-12:9

19 For you gladly bear with fools, being wise

yourselves! 20 For you bear it if someone makes slaves of

you, or devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on

airs, or strikes you in the face. 21 To my shame, I must

say, we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking

as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22 Are they

Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they

offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23 Are they servants of

Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—

with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with

countless beatings, andoften near death. 24 Five times I

received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less

one.25 Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was

stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I

was adrift at sea; 26 on frequent journeys, in danger from

rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own

people,danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in

the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false

brothers; 27 in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless

night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and

exposure. 28 And, apart from other things, there is the daily

pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. 29 Who is

weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not

indignant?

30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my

weakness. 31 The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who

is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. 32 At

Damascus, the governor under King Aretas was guarding the

city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33 but I was let down

in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his

hands.

Paul's Visions and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be

gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the

Lord. 2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago

was caught up tothe third heaven—whether in the body or

out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3 And I know that

this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body

or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4 and he

heard things that cannot be told, which man may not

utter. 5 On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own

behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses— 6 though

if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would

be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one

may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from

me. 7 Soto keep me from becoming conceited because of the

surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me

in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me

from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the

Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to

me, ―My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made

perfect in weakness.‖ Therefore I will boast all the more

gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may

rest upon me.

Hebrews 4:9-13

9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of

God, 10 for whoever has entered God's rest has also rested

from his works as God did from his.

11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, sothat no one may

fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God

is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword,

piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of

marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the

heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all

arenaked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must

give account.

Luke 8:4-15

The Parable of the Sower

4 And when a great crowd was gathering and people from

town after town came to him, he said in a parable, 5 ―A sower

went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along

the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air

devoured it. 6 And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it

withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 And some fell

among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked

it. 8 And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a

hundredfold.‖ As he said these things, he called out, ―He

who has ears to hear, let him hear.‖

The Purpose of the Parables

9 And when his disciples asked him what this parable

meant, 10 he said, ―To you it has been given to know the

secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in

parables, so that ‗seeing they may not see, and hearing they

may not understand.‘ 11 Now the parable is this: The seed

is the word of God. 12 The ones along the path are those who

have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word

from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be

saved. 13 And the ones on the rock are those who, when they

hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root;

they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall

away. 14 And as for what fell among the thorns, they are

those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked

by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit

does not mature. 15 As for that in the good soil, they are those

who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good

heart, and bear fruit with patience.

Psalm 84

My Soul Longs for the Courts of the LORD

To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm

of the Sons of Korah.

84 How lovely is your dwelling place,

O LORD of hosts!2 My soul longs, yes, faints

for the courts of the LORD;

my heart and flesh sing for joy

to the living God.

3 Even the sparrow finds a home,

and the swallow a nest for herself,

where she may lay her young,

at your altars, O LORD of hosts,

my King and my God.4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house,

ever singing your praise! Selah

5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,

in whose heart are the highways to Zion.6 As they go through the Valley of Baca

they make it a place of springs;

the early rain also covers it with pools.7 They go from strength to strength;

each one appears before God in Zion.

8 O LORD God of hosts, hear my prayer;

give ear, O God of Jacob! Selah9 Behold our shield, O God;

look on the face of your anointed!

10 For a day in your courts is better

than a thousand elsewhere.

I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God

than dwell in the tents of wickedness.11 For the LORD God is a sun and shield;

the LORD bestows favor and honor.

No good thing does he withhold

from those who walk uprightly.12 O LORD of hosts,

blessed is the one who trusts in you!
