Classic Heartbeat
Continued on Page 4
We searched for several years for a ‘56 Chevy Nomad to restore. After a few years we
found this one at Lawrence Marshall Antique Autos in Hempstead, Texas. It was orange with
a black interior. At that time it had a 327 4 speed with very rusty floors. We drove it for three
years and then the clutch went out. When we jacked it up to change the 4 speed to an
automatic we saw the gas tank was hanging down. That’s when we realized a restoration
was needed on this Nomad!
We had bought parts for 8 years. When we started we replaced the floors and took the
body off the frame. This is when we saw there was damage to the frame. We clipped the
front end and installed a new one from Fat Man Fabrications, along with installed spring
pockets on the rear end to accommodate larger tires. Over the years we have added a
350 engine, 350 Turbo transmission and a 9 inch Ford rear end along with disc brakes on all
4 corners. We painted the frame House of Colors silver and the body with House of Colors
tangelo orange. We added flames, louvered the hood, and put in a new interior. We have

DACC SHINES AT 52nd DALLAS AUTORAMA!
For the 52nd year the Autorama took place in
Dallas and DACC for the 35th year in a row presented a fine display of ’55-’57 Chevys!
It was at this show in 1976 that DACC was born,
and since 1977 our club has had a club display of Tri Five Chevys ever since!
The 2012 version of ‘DACC at the Autorama’ had a great lineup and mix of club cars that consisted of Michael Brown’s ’57 factory fuel injected original convertible, Jim Leinart’s great recreation of a 60’s gasser with his ’55 Bel Air Hardtop, John Rogers’ beautiful ’56 Nomad, James Carter’s
great ’57 Bel Air hardtop (that was on the cover of the Terrell Daily News just days before the show!),
Robert Black’s hot ’55 big block sedan, Phillip Zaragoza’s beautiful modified ’55 2nd series
Pickup, Don Mullin’s original restored ’57 150 crème puff sedan and Mike Jones’ beautiful ’55
Bel Air 4 dr Sedan. What a fantastic lineup of Tri Five Chevys! THANKS to all these guys for making
the effort to put their cars in our display, and special thanks to Marvin Cowden for his help with
setup and teardown of the club display, and James Carter, John Rogers, Joe Ortega, Mike Jones and Marvin Cowden for taking a shift working the table
during the show in the booth!
It was a great group effort – THANKS!!
Be sure and check out photos from the show at the club website at DallasClassicChevy.com!

WHO IS THAT PERSON? Take a good look, take your best guess, then check on the DACC website’s Chat Board link under the ‘MISC’ section – and
there you will find the answer of ‘WHO IS THAT PERSON’?
HINT – this is in 1955, and that is a current DACC Board member’s mom and sister!)

Our last ‘FROM THE PAST PHOTO’ below was -
Alan Strong in Peoria, Illinois where Alan grew up and he is standing next to Mr Snowman. The ’57 in the background is his Mom’s with a 283 4 barrel with the classis India Ivory/Canyon Coral paint, no power accessories, radio or AC! A cracked cylinder head resulted in his Dad selling the car against Alan’s plea
for $150 when he was 14 years old!
had it in several shops over the years, but
Texas House of Hot Rods in Mansfield
finished it off by installing AC, wipers,
power windows, a Pioneer stereo, power
seats and interior.
A friend asked me what her name was.
She's named Jasmine because our song
when we were dating was Summer Breeze
by Seals and Croft which has a line that
says "blowing through the Jasmine in my
mind." Our car was finished in August 2011.
We are back on the road meeting new
people and making friends!

Relive the 2011 Woodward Dream Cruise! Part 1 of 3 by Geoff Clark
This is Geoff Clark’s ‘Spot Report’ from the legendary Woodward Dream Cruise, an event that has taken on legend status in Detroit each August and continues to grow as a major event in the classic and collector car world. This is a teaser, and the rest of Geoff’s story will be published in the next two month’s issues of ‘Classic Heartbeat’. The lure of going to Detroit the third week in August was
appealing from many aspects. For starters, we sweltered in
McKinney given we where enduring one of the hottest and
driest summers ever – in case anyone has forgotten the
August average high temperature in North Texas was 104.3F
(contrast to the average high temperature of 82.3F in Detroit).
But the main reason to find an excuse to be in Detroit the
third week in August was to be part of the Woodward Dream
Cruise (WDC) and surrounded by an estimated 45,000 hot
rods, street machines, and cruisers of every possible make
and creation. It is without question the biggest, baddest, and
bodacious cruise on the planet Earth. This year would be
special given the WDC special sponsor would be Chevrolet
to coincide with their 100th Anniversary Celebration events
for 2011. So with all this overwhelming rationale and a clear
weekend forecast in SE Michigan we had to go.
A quick historical perspective on Woodward Avenue and the
WDC for us North Texans. Woodward Avenue, aka MI-1,
was the first paved road in America and served as an “early
test track” to Henry Ford given his Highland Park Model T
production facility bordered the road. Woodward Avenue
served as the cruise strip for West Side Detroit in the 1950s
and 1960s (Gratiot Avenue was the East Side cruise while
Fort Steet from Lincoln Park to Wyandotte served the “Down
River” area). The Woodward cruise strip bookends featured
the Pontiac “Wide Track” on the north and the city of
Ferndale sixteen miles to the south. In addition to guys
competing for the title of fastest car in town, The Big Three
(GM, Ford, Chrysler) was out in force with experimental
models using Woodward to test and evaluate future muscle
cars and engines. GM mule cars included a Pontiac Firebird,
GTO and a black 1948 Cadillac complete an L88 Big Block.
Ford ran a red Galaxie with a 428 and a stable of Mustangs.
But the fabled King of Woodward title belonged to the
Chrysler team with a 1967 Plymouth GTX, nicknamed the
Silver Bullet, that features an experimental 487 Hemi. This
car belongs to a collector today and was documented last
year in the quarter mile at 10.5 sec / 132 mph – not bad for a
60s era “street” car. The reunion with cruising Woodward
started seventeen years ago by a dad named Nelson House
and a group of volunteers looking to raise money for a soccer
team. That first event in 1995 completely broke all
expectations with 250,000 people showing up. The rest, they
say, is history as the event now draws over 1 million people
from all over the globe to witness the greatest show on the
street. All of the automakers stage huge displays along
Woodward Avenue and still roll out experimental models as
witnessed by the first showing in the past by the Mustang
GT, Corvette ZR-1, Camaro, and Challenger. This year
included first showing and racing down Woodward of the
Camaro ZL-1 and Corvette Z06 Carbon Fiber. The stage is
set...
