The Toolkit includes five summer program catalog samples from three different school districts. These

samples are comprehensive guides of the district-sponsored and co-sponsored programs provided for

students during the summer. Each sample catalog includes an overview of the district’s summer learning

approach, program descriptions, schedules, administration contacts, eligibility requirements, and

Dear Dallas Families, Summer is an exciting time — one filled with fun and exploration! It can also be a time for your children to learn a new skill, improve their reading ability or explore the arts.

Dallas ISD and the City of Dallas have partnered under the umbrella Dallas City of Learning to bring Dallas families dozens of FREE and FUN summer activities for children of all ages. This partnership is managed by the nonprofit organization Big Thought.

Whether your child is interested in robotics, dance, sports or literature, we have an activity to keep him or her engaged and excited about learning all summer long! This “Discover Summer” catalog is a one-stop-shop for parents to learn about activities and programs right in their own backyard.

How to Discover SummerLocate Your Geographic Area.Start by locating summer activities and programs in your geographic area. The Discover Summer catalog is divided into four geographic quadrants: Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest.

Scan the list of Summer Activities and Programs. After locating your geographic area, scan the list of summer activities and programs, which are listed in alphabetical order. Activities and camps include athletics and sports activities, college and career programs, culinary arts and fine arts experiences, leadership activities, literacy programs and STEM camps.

Highlight Activities and Programs of Interest. Highlight the activities and programs that interest you and your child. Be sure to note the camp dates, locations, hours of operation and the websites where you can find more information!

CAMP METALHEAD CREATIVE ARTS CENTER OF DALLASCamp MetalHead is a free summer program providing relevant job skills training and quality arts instruction in welding and jewelry making. Students gain impressive job skills while learning welding, belt sanding, sand blasting and grinding in metal arts and small metals. Students will use tools such as oxyacetylene torches, arc welders, pneumatic hammers, jewelry torches, grinders, polishers, and more. Field trips will feature visits to artists’ studios and local job sites to show how these tools are used in both environments. Camp MetalHead couples arts instruction with job skills training, while expanding students’ abilities in a fun and active way. Over the course of the six-week summer program, students will develop artistic skills, enhance their creativity and thirst for learning and gain knowledge about future careers. FREE JUNIOR PLAYERS DISCOVER THEATER CAMPDiscover Summer Theater Camps are a free resource to North Texas children that focuses on teaching basic skills of theater performance in a safe, fun and structured environment. Professional teaching artists lead warm-up exercises, theater games and facilitate an original ten-minute performance piece to debut at the Festival of Plays. Each camp site will participate in a Festival of Plays session either the night of, or the day following, the last day of class. The festival location will be announced later in the spring. BASICALLY BEETHOVEN FESTIVAL (FINE ARTS CHAMBER PLAYERS)Join us on Sundays in July for this exciting festival featuring professional musicians from local ensembles performing a diverse range of music. The first concert of the festival will feature a string quartet: two violins, a viola, and a cello. The program will include the piece String Quartet, No. 5 by Quinn Mason, an accomplished young composer who grew up in Dallas and graduated from Dallas ISD. Every program includes a Rising Star Recital at 2:30 p.m. and a Feature Performance at 3 p.m. Rising Star Recitals present local gifted student musicians, many of whom are winners of area music and concerto competitions. Feature Performances showcase professional musicians from across the Metroplex. SUMMER ROCKS 5 (DALLAS COMMUNITY FELLOWSHIP, INC.)Summer Rocks 5 is a seven-week (M-F, 7-hours per day) experiential program. Students are exposed to IXL, a computerized learning system designed to help improve math and language skills; the ABC Mouse computerized reading program, computer coding, robotics, critical thinking skills, and social-emotional learning. Choir, dance, drumming, guitar and keyboard are provided for those with musical interests. Culturally enhancing activities include field trips to the Dallas Museum of Art, African-American Museum, Dallas Aquarium, Dallas Zoo, and Texas Horse Park. Summer SSI (Accelerated Instruction)The Summer SSI Accelerated Instruction Program is designed as a continuation of services for students in grades five and eight who did not meet the state passing requirement on the second administration of the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness).
