A MESSAGE FROM FR. MURRAY

In a wonderful book entitled “Touching the Holy,” author Robert Wicks, a well-known Catholic psychologist who worked for years with Catholic workers returning from areas of war and violence, wrote that everyone needs three important figures in their lives; a cheer-leader, a wisdom figure, and a prophet. He says that we all need someone who is in our corner and believes in us, even when we are less than our best selves. We need someone, too, to share with us the wisdom that has come from experience and age, a person who has seen many of the things we are seeing for the first time and is able to guide us with insight and patience. Finally, we need someone who can call us to the truth, to help us see that our behavior needs to change or to be more focused on the truth of things. These figures are on my mind as we come to this 4th Sunday in Ordinary time. The Gospel reading this Sunday calls us away from any pretense that everything is OK with the way the first hearers (and we) are going. The townspeople are angry at the prophetic words Jesus speaks. This is a continuation of an important theme from the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Scriptures, people grumble against the words of Moses and the prophets (including John the Baptist) or any leader who tries to upset the status quo. The vision of Jesus, who is God, is bigger than the vision of the people of Israel who are content to believe that that they are God’s only chosen people, despite the truth that many times in their history, God stepped outside of their exclusive relationship to include non-Jews in the message of salvation or to heal those alienated from the community, or even to use creation, animals and natural events to help the people move from a singular understanding of their relationship to God, to understand that everyone is invited into the love of God. It is not comfortable to think that this prophetic message applies to us too, but it does. The message of Jesus may cause us to want to throw Him off a metaphoric cliff too, but it does not allow us to escape the truth that we are a people who are called to listen to and put into action the words He has spoken. This is the difference between a believer and a disciple. Believers take in the word and carefully consider it, whereas disciples are those who put the words into action whether convenient or inconvenient. This applies to our parish too. We cannot be content with the status quo. We need to look at how we are welcoming new people, what programs and practices are life-giving and which ones are not working to serve those on the inside and outside. This is the work that we are about, preparing our parish to be a missional parish that actively goes out to invite people to know and have a direct relationship with Jesus. In the following weeks I will be writing more about this, sharing with you how we have begun to do this, and what the future could look like. Through this, I hope that we too will be seen as a parish that touches the holiness of God through faith and action in Jesus Christ. Peace, Father Murray

Paz, Padre Murray

GIVING ONLINE HELPS OUR PARISH When a winter storms comes on a weekend, it leads to a lower collection that can cause problems with parish budgeting. To help the parish avoid these problems, you can sign up for online giving through WeShare. Online giving allows you to automatically give to the parish on a schedule. If you’re not signed up to give online, please consider signing up for it. You can sign up here: www.tinyurl.com/MQOAchurchgiving. Thank you for your continued generosity!

SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul of Salem will be holding our monthly collection next weekend on February 9 and 10, and will be at the church doors after every Mass. During the last month, we were blessed to receive $10,980 from our collection boxes and many very generous benefactors. Through your gifts, our volunteers were able to bring God’s love and mercy to over 50 families, providing $2,632 in food vouchers, $942 for utilities, $3,548 in rent, and $1,826 for other bills. We also provided supplies for a Christmas meal

to 48 families, Christmas plants to 36 homebound people, and two meals at Lifebridge. In the Gospel next week, the disciples decide to leave everything to follow Jesus. We are also called to follow Jesus, who tells us that “whatever you do to the least of mine, you do for me.” Through your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, you can show your love for our Lord and your love of your neighbor who is hungry, hopeless, alone and frightened. We gratefully acknowledge your generous contributions, which help the needy of Salem.
