Worship Gathering October 15, 2017

Whether you are a first-time guest or have been gathering with us for some time, we are glad you are with us today. We are a family of Jesus-followers who gather each week to worship God and scatter each week to reflect God. Thanks so much for worshipping with us. Please join us in reflecting God throughout the week.

Please complete a blue guest card from the back of the worship center seats and place it in the offering tray as it passes you. We would love to be able to contact you to say hello. If you would like to know more about being a Jesus-follower, being baptized, or becoming a part of Lafayette, you are invited to meet with those in the prayer room just after the sermon. Turn left as you exit the back of the worship center; the prayer room is on the right just past the kitchen.

1 Wedding shower Jesus followers love to share joy with those celebrating and love to share our possessions with one another. This afternoon from 1:00-2:30pm in the fellowship hall we will have a wedding shower honoring Jordan Noyes and Kendra Stevenson. They are registered at Bed Bath & Beyond, Macy's, and Target. You’re invited to come and share generously with them, and to celebrate this joyful time in their lives. 2 Disaster relief special contribution God is a cheerful giver and God loves a cheerful giver! Today is a day we have designated to share with people in the Caribbean who are suffering from recent hurricanes. Today and every Sunday we worship with our first fruits, giving God an offering off the top of our income. Today, we have an opportunity to share from our leftovers with people who are in need. What a blessing to be able to reach out in love, with no expectations, and give. To God be the glory. 3 Lamenting With God How do believers live out faith in a prolonged season of pain and loss? We are seeking to recover a lost ancient resource — the language of lament. This adult study is in the worship center, 15 minutes after the worship gathering concludes. Be listening for the “call to lament,” today featuring the musical stylings of Joe Cocker. 4 SERVE Groups The second wave of our fall SERVE Groups is coming to an end next week. If you have not yet signed up but want to get in as son as possible, see Kyle Johnson today. Next Sunday we will have our sign-up for the third wave of SERVE Groups. Be prayerful over your involvement, and serve! We have had great participation.

Process is the third of our Four Words on discipleship. As we discover new ways of thinking, doing and living from Jesus, it is important to take time to process them. Often we are so busy that we don’t slow down long enough to think, to ponder, to process how we can translate our new discovery into a new way of life. How sad it is when we discover all kinds of new ideas and ways but never experience transformation. Pause to reflect. Take time to think. How are you being challenged? How are you being changed? — Bob Clark

Why a special contribution? As followers of Jesus, we want to be generous. As Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” We give our first-fruits each Sunday to worship God, declaring thanksgiving and trust. Lafayette has a stewardship plan based on this faithful, weekly giving. Disaster relief is not a budgeted item in our plan due to the nature of disasters, but many want to give an amount above and beyond their first-fruit giving.

How did we decide who to partner with? We had conversations with churches, large and small, in Texas and Florida. We also had conversations with para-church organizations regarding relief efforts in Texas, Florida, and the Caribbean. After all these conversations, we discerned the wisdom of partnering with Healing Hands International.

Who is Healing Hands International? Healing Hands International is a relief organization that grew out of a class at Lipscomb University in 1991. Their vision is a world that is full of hope where physical needs are met and hearts are surrendered to Jesus Christ. Their mission is to aid, equip, and empower those in need around the world in the name of Jesus Christ so they might experience God’s healing grace (see more at hhi.org).

Why the Caribbean rather than Texas or Florida? Healing Hands International advised us the relief effort for the Caribbean was underfunded compared to that in Texas and Florida, so we discerned that our contribution on October 15 might best be used there.
