    you know it." It follows that knowledge can be called wisdom when we startusing it and benefiting from it. Intelligent action, in other words, is required totransform valuable knowledge into wisdom.

    You will notice that much of the content in this book is just plain commonsense. Oliver WendeIl Holmes Sr. once said, "We all need an education in theobvious." In the same vein, a Latin proverb states that common sense is not allthat common. What's more, philosophers tell us common sense in an unusualamount leads to wisdom.

    I hope that this book will also give you an insight or two instead of justreminding you of what you already know. There may indeed be a few lifelessons that you previously haven't leamed. Martin Vanbee wamed us, "Leamfrom the mistakes of others - you can't live long enough to make them allyourself."

    After reading this book you may finally get the message about some oflife's important principles so that you don't have to releam them the hard way.Perish the thought of never violating all the lessons in this book, however.There will always be moments of weakness in your life during which yourepeat some mistake you have made several times before.

    Your goal should be to minimize the number ofimportant lessons you keepforgetting and the number of times you forget them. Try to read this book withan open heart and an open mind. Apply the principles that resonate with youand discard those that don't.

    Whenever working on a new project, I always keep in mind the words ofThomas Carlyle: "The best efIect of any book is that it excites the reader toself-activity." My wish is that the life lessons in this book infect you with theinspiration, motivation, and commitment needed to attain your dream ofhaving a full, relaxed, satisfying, and happy life.

At the extreme,people frantically searching for the meaning of life have been known tocommit suicide.

    Even if you discover the absolute meaning of life, you may realize that itdoesn't really make any difference to the quality of your existence anyway.Your answer may be that ultimately life is pretty meaningless, that we are allinsignificant grains of dust in the grand cosmic scheme of things, that we areallleading random lives, that our existence doesn't affect anything or anyone.

    George Carlin may have actually found a far better answer to the meaningof life. Now don't get too excited, because his answer isn 't as profound as youmay anticipate. Carlin once said that the ultimate meaning of life is "to find aplace to put all your stuff." This, indeed, is as good of an answer as any other.

    In short, if you want to reduce the existential angst in your life, give upyour self-adopted role as chief investigator of what makes this universe rock.No amount of brooding about the meaning of life can take the place of goingout there and enjoying all it has to offer. The mistake most people make aboutpursuing the meaning of life is searching for the answer instead of living it. Onthe contrary, there is much scholarly evidence to support these statements.Research by psychologists indicates that the things that most people assurnewould make life better - money, farne, status, beauty, or social prominence -over the long run don't seem to matter all that much, if at all.

    For example, one research paper reported that physical attractiveness hasafmost a very marginal effect on how content people are in life. Another studyconcluded individuals may be pleased for a month or two after a big lotterywin, but there is no relationship between the money and ultimate happiness ayear later. Still other research has shown that social standing, age, intelligence,and education have no effect on true happiness. ,

    How happy you are depends on whether you~wilhng to be happy.Happiness will elude you as long as you are thinking and doing \yhat's wrongfor you.
