Parents, I need your help, or perhaps rather, your support. When you enrolled your students at the school you entered into a partnership with us and part of that was an acknowledgement and acceptance of school protocols. Now, we would all agree, that the modern world is throwing us all sorts of challenges that we have to manage regarding social media and the use of devices. Parents, it's our job to say 'no'. I have raised three children, not perfectly, but saying 'no' frequently. If your child messages you please ignore them, and tell them not to do it. And please don't message them during the day and expect a response. The same applies to their use of social media. The boundaries are yours to set. Thank you in advance for your support in this matter

Year 11-12 Assessment Tasks

Students in Years 11 and 12 are, generally, engaging with their continued assessment program in a positive and committed fashion. The momentum created by the assessment program is powerful and it is important to maintain focus.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind students and parents that direct parental contact is required if a student is unable to submit or undertake an assessment task. The College understands that illness or misadventure can occur and we have a firm set of procedures to follow in such instances.

If you have any queries about any of the above, please do not hesitate to contact me at the College.

We know you have been patiently waiting for a Trinity Anglican College Facebook page – and now it is here. We want our page to be a positive reflection on the wonderful teaching and learning that goes on in our school and an avenue to share some great photos with you.

We will let you know if the bus from school camp is on time, if the cross country has been cancelled or when tickets for the College Production go on sale. But for general and curriculum information, please continue to contact your pastoral care tutor or the front office.

Happiness

“The good life consists in deriving happiness by using your signature strengths every day in the main realms of living. The meaningful life adds one more component: using these same

strengths to forward knowledge, power or goodness. “ Dr. Martin Seligman, Leading authority of Positive Psychology.

Happiness is an essential component of our Positive Education Model. This week, I spent time with Year 9 talking about the importance of Happiness and their mental well-being. When we feel Happy, we feel a sense of satisfaction, fulfilment and life is going as planned. There are many strategies that can help maintain our Happiness:

- Kindness - Gratitude - Optimism - Positive Action - Focusing on your Strengths - Goals: both short term and long term.

STUDY SKILLS - PROOFING YOUR ASSESSMENTS

1st Proof It’s a good idea to relocate from your work space for this. For example, take your assignment to a park or another room - somewhere you will sit with new focus for a set time. Go to this place with the sole purpose to proof. Ensure you take the criteria, what the question is asking with you. Your first proof needs to take into account the following factors.

From the Director of Pastoral and Academic Care

Page 4: 10 June 2016 - Trinity Anglican Collegetrinityac.nsw.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/2016-term2-week7.… · and now it is here. We want our page to be a positive reflection on

4 Newsletter 9, Week 7, Term 2 10 June 2016

• WORD COUNT: Is the word count of your assessment within the specified limit? If it is not, note how many words need to be cut or added.

• SPELLING / GRAMMAR: Spelling and grammar need to be correct. If you are using a computer, spell check will help - but don’t rely on it. For example, you might have typed 'from' when you meant 'form'. The spell check won’t pick that up.

• SOURCES: Are all sources listed for visuals, examples and quotes?

• CRITERIA / QUESTION ANSWERED? Check the criteria and tick where you have addressed the criteria. You will then ensure your assignment answers everything asked.

• REPETITION: It’s easy to repeat points; double check you haven’t done this.

• USEFUL INFORMATION: It’s not uncommon to write unnecessary information. Do you have points that don’t really answer the question? Have you written clearly? Is there any information you could leave out? Is there any information that you realise needs to be added?

• REINFORCE: This is where you need to finalise which words you will bold, highlight, underline etc. so your assignment clearly identifies the main points. Bolding can let the teacher see clearly that you have covered all the parts of the question, that there is a sequence of ideas and you have organised the information well.

• FIX: Make sure that when you are back at your desk you fix all of the errors you have found.

2nd Proof The next day repeat the above steps, but this time - READ YOUR ASSIGNMENT OUT LOUD! If you didn’t print your assignment to proof the first time, now could be the time. Reading and hearing the words spoken in different mediums can sometimes give a new perspective to your writing. Note down any changes you need to make, and make them.

3rd Proof It’s always a good idea to ask someone to proof your assignment after you have proofed it first. It is common for the writer not to pick up typos or silly mistakes because he/she knows what they meant and sees the words they intended to write, and not the errors. So recruit a proof reader (parent, relatives, older sibling or friend etc.).

Angela Lum Director of Pastoral Care

As we head toward the end of another busy term it is a good time to take stock. One of the great joys about working with children is the fact that every day brings change and new challenges. The individual needs of every learner can change at various times and it is a part of our charter to focus on all aspects of learning. One aspect that is often raised is the resilience of students. Their ability to bounce back. This is such an important aspect of learning as it allows every student to take up a challenge, even though success is not guaranteed, and to learn much from the journey. We often marvel at the success of individuals but should always be aware that it is often their persistence, their willingness to bounce back from failures that has ensured their success. I have been fortunate enough to listen to many speakers over a number of years who have spoken about their success and how this only occurred because of their persistence. This is probably why we tend, as teachers and parents, to recognise and reward effort and celebrate success. As A. Einstein stated “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” So we encourage students to try something new, to challenge the known and step into the unknown with patience and fortitude, as this will ensure greater understanding, deeper knowledge and a more fulfilling life.

SHINE A wonderful enriching experience for all students. The program organised and structured by Mr Thurling was rich in all levels of experiential learning. From gaining a deeper understanding of human impact on our local environment through to understanding the anatomy of various reptiles all students were involved and aware. We all look forward to this day being a catalyst for more discussion and creative thinking about our legacy when it comes to sustaining our environment into the future.

Cold and Flu Season It’s that time of the year, with Term 2 marking the beginning of the cooler months and the start of the cold/flu season. Please help us ‘fight the good fight’ against the spread of germs and bacteria that cause colds and flu by encouraging good hygiene habits (tissues for runny noses and for sneezing into) and good hand washing techniques

After School Activities In Term 3 we will again offer After School activities, between 3.15 and 4.15pm. This will include Sport (Hockey) on a Monday afternoon, Cooking & Gardening Group on Tuesday afternoon and the Art & Craft Club on Wednesday afternoon. Notes will go out about these at the beginning of Term 3. Netball is also offered as an extra-curricular activity, with a Trinity Wodonga team competing in the Saturday morning Wodonga Netball competitions. Lost Uniforms Please be sure to name the property of students, particularly uniform items. These items are expensive but, if they aren’t named, there is little chance of them getting back to their rightful owner. Presently there are several jackets in the office so, if someone is missing clothing items, please check the lost property. Also at the office is an assortment of lunch boxes and small plastic containers. There is also a silver bracelet with a carved animal design. It looks too large for a child’s bracelet, so please contact the office if it is yours.

CIS Primary AFL – State Champions Trinity College had three boys represent NSWCIS at the Primary AFL State Championships in Nelson Bay; Seb Sproule, Conor Willis and George Flanagan.

The CIS Primary AFL Team won the first NSWPSSA AFL Premiership for NSWCIS since their inception into the competition in 2006. The boys opened their campaign with a strong victory over one of the competition favourites Mackillop: CIS -7 goals, 3 behinds (45 points) defeating Mackillop 2 goals, 6 behinds (18 points).

Their following match against Riverina proved to be a tough physical encounter and the boys went down 4 goals, 2 behinds (26 points) to 9 goals, 3 behinds (57 points).

Conor Willis captained the team to a victory, 47 to 13 over Polding on the second day.

This led to a quarter final match up against Sydney South West. The CIS boys played an exciting brand of unselfish football dominating from the outset and winning the game 10 goals,12 behinds (72 points) to 1 goal, 0 behinds (6 points).

Having secured a spot in the semi-final, CIS faced another tough contest against a Mackillop team hungry for revenge. George Flanagan led from the front as captain in this game which proved to be a nail-biter, with the lead changing throughout the match. A late goal by CIS enabled them to take hold of a 1-point win, the final score being CIS 6 goals, 7 behinds (43 points) defeating Mackillop 6 goals, 6 behinds (42 points). This victory secured CIS a place in the Grand Final for the first time in 10 years.

CIS faced Riverina who had defeated them in the pool matches. The boys knew they had to keep improving if they hoped to achieve their goal of winning the State Title. It was a superb team effort with CIS scoring 8 goals, 3 behinds (51 points) to defeat Riverina 3 goals, 7 behinds (25 points). CIS were crowned the Bob Bevan Champions and were NSWPSSA AFL Champions!

Big congratulations all three Trinity boys who represented themselves, their families and the College with great distinction. Additionally, well done to George Flanagan on his award for Sportsmanship and Fair Play.

Year 3/4 Basketball at Aussie Hoops Carnival On 7 June I coached a team of 8 players selected from Years 3 and 4 to represent Trinity College at an Aussie Hoops Basketball Carnival at Wodonga Stadium.

Sam Vaccaro, Harry Maddock, Luke Sampson, Tim Brndusic, Jeremy Roberts, Harrison Wilson, Josh Gould and Harry Harrington played 5 games, winning 3 and losing 2 to end up in the Grand Final, playing off against a very strong St Monica’s team. With each successive game, the team became better and better and gave the winning team from St Monica’s a run for their money. We went down in the Grand Final by 7 points! The team acquitted themselves admirably and deserve to be very proud of their efforts.

Many thanks to Huon Howard coming along and helping us with his expert assistance and support throughout the day.

On Wednesday 1 June, Year 9 took part in a camembert cheese making day for our STEM project.

eight weeks, after the cheese has matured, students will be able to take their cheese home and enjoy eating it.

The day had a lot of work and effort put into it by students, Year 9 science teachers, staff helpers, and the Association of Independent Schools. Before the actual cheese making day, the staff involved had to attend a training day to learn how to make the cheese. The Science rooms, which were our cheese making laboratories, were scrubbed clean and all cheese related appliances were sterilised. Students had a strict set of guidelines of how to make the cheese, and certain procedures to properly create camembert cheese.

Students who created the cheese have hopefully understood how much work goes into making sure that the food we buy is safe to eat. Students were required to always wash their hands thoroughly before entering a classroom, sterilising all utensils before using them. Hairnets and lab coats also had to be worn to keep everything clean. To see if students were successful in making camembert cheese, the pH tests need to be successful.

The next day, each block of cheese had to undergo a pH test. Each day or two, the cheese needed to be turned to allow an even distribution of white mould.

Overall, the camembert cheese making day was a successful event. The day was challenging with keeping things sterilised, but it will be rewarding when the cheese is ready to be enjoyed. Year 9 would like to give a big thanks to everyone who was involved with the day.

Two major competitions have been held recently: the BMLTA Poster Competition, open to students of French from around the district will be judged this week. The standard of entries from our Trinity students has been very high indeed. We await the results with bated breath! Thank you to all the students who participated so very well.

The Language Perfect World Championships was open to all students in Senior school who use the Education Perfect as part of their French course. The Championships were badly timed for us, being held during the run-up to exams. I can announce our three Gold Winners, though: Ryan Wandell, Palk Bath and Simer Kaur of Year 8 all did us proud, with Shannyn Leskie and Pearl McMillan also contributing very well.

Year 5 have been studying the novel ‘Northern Lights’ by Philip Pullman. This is a great novel filled with excitement, action and adventure. Here is what Mineli Madawala, from 5RV, thought about it.

My favourite part in the Northern Lights is the scene where Iofur Raknison and Iorek Byrnison fight. This scene for me is where the story gets interesting. Iofur wants a daemon and Lyra tricks him into fighting the exiled Iorek by pretending to be Iorek’s daemon, and promising that when Iofur wins the fight she will become his daemon. You want to know if this will be the end of Iorek or the end of Iofur. Maybe even the end of both of them. You also want to know if Lyra will have to be Iofur’s daemon.

I recommend this book to children aged 10-12 years.

Star Rating:

I give The Northern Lights by Philip Pullman a rating of 4 and 1\2 stars!!

Year 5 got creative on a soul level and spent time thinking about what animal would be their daemon and then took a great deal of time and care to create a self-portrait of themselves and their daemon.

What is a Daemon?

A dæmon /ˈdiːmən/ is a type of fictional being in the Philip Pullman fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials. Dæmons are the external physical manifestation of a person's 'inner-self' that takes the form of an animal. Dæmons have human intelligence, are capable of human speech—regardless of the form they take—and usually behave as though they are independent of their humans. Children’s dæmons can change form voluntarily, almost instantaneously, to become any creature, real or imaginary. During their adolescence a person's dæmon undergoes "settling", an event in which that person's dæmon permanently and involuntarily assumes the form of the animal which the person most resembles in character. Dæmons and their humans are almost always of different genders.

Uniform shop update

Stock levels As many of you would be aware, Midford now run the Uniform Shop for us at Trinity. We are a new school to Midford and have had some initial supply problems. We have been assured this will improve. At present we are waiting on long sleeve blue shirts, sport polos and tracksuits in sizes 6/8/10 along with some taupe trousers for Years 10, 11 and 12. These are not due until early July however we are attempting to get them earlier. Thank you for your patience. If Junior School students (especially new families to the school) are feeling the cold, I am happy to lend some second-hand tracksuits until the new

ones arrive. As some small orders have arrived we have been despatching older orders first.

Uniform changes The new tracksuit top is a jacket style with the word TRINITY across the back and a new track pant with a zipper on the legs. These replace the fleecy trackpants and round neck fleecy top.

There has been some concern from parents about the warmth of the new tracksuit. We have addressed this with Midford and they are looking at solutions for us. We will make the co-curricular ‘Hoodie’ TAC fleecy top an approved sports uniform item until an alternative is available.

The spray jacket (with the horizontal red & white stripe) will be superseded as we are currently looking at a newer style. This jacket is only showerproof, so we are addressing a waterproof option. The spray jacket will remain current for the next few years as this has not been replaced yet. Spray jackets can be worn over the formal uniform as an additional item. We do have some spray jackets for sale through our second-hand shop.

We also have large Trinity umbrellas for sale at $35.

With introduction of uniform pieces, families have 18 months to two years to swap to the new uniform. Eg. The new tie (thinner stripe one) has been now available for two years, so therefore is now current uniform. Those wearing the thicker stripe will need to replace theirs.

The TAC Uniform Shop with be closed for the school holidays from Thursday 23 June 2016 at 5pm and will reopen for Term 3 on Monday 18 July at 8:30 – 4:30pm.

Normal Trading Hours will commence in Term 3

Monday 8:30am - 4:30pm Wednesday 8:30am – 4:30pm Thursday 12:00pm - 5.00pm
