More than ten people per week were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during the police festival crackdown.

And more than 23 people were ticketed for speeding every seven days throughout the six week campaign.

During that period there were more than 140 crashes on the roads – three of them resulting in fatalities compared to just one last year. Police say the results are so bad that many of those driving on Cayman roads do not deserve to hold a licence.

In total 62 people were arrested for DUI between 28th November and 4th January and 140 people fined for speeding.

A further six people were locked up over the past weekend for DUI and police say that even though their campaign has ended, they will continue to target those who flout the law by drink driving.

Dr Devi Shetty’s Narayana “health city” in the Cayman Islands is the launch pad for the Indian physician’s wider ambitions to bring affordable medical care to the rest of the world.

“We intend to build medical health cities in India, Asia and Africa, and will build large numbers of hospitals in these areas,” he said yesterday in a British Broadcasting Corporation interview.

Cayman, he said, would prove that healthcare can de delivered at a fraction of the costs in the developed world, and “if all goes well,” he said, “we’ll start in Africa.”

The Cayman Islands Narayana Centre would be the first venture outside of his Bangalorer, India-based Narayana Hrudayalaya complex, the Indian physician said, and would serve as a model for the next steps.

The rising costs of healthcare, in the face of rising demand, would be controlled through his “health city” concept. This would achieve economies of scale, train medical personnel and make affordable services available to consumers everywhere.

Dr Shetty, on a four-day George Town visit last week, said groundbreaking would occur in eight months for the initial, 140-bed phase of East End’s Narayana centre, with the first patients admitted in August 2013.

Modelled on the Bangalore complex, Dr Shetty’s medical group plans a $2 billion, 15-year prgramme, ultimately creating a 2,000-bed

tertiary-care hospital, specialising in pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, gastroenterology and a range of other disciplines, as well as after-care facilities and a medical school.

Performing nearly 15,000 surgeries on patients from 25 countries, the Bangalore operation is known for efficiency, earning after-tax profit margins of 7.7%, more than most US private hospitals

“America,” with more than 40 million uninsured, “has the highest [medical] costs in the world.” Dr Shetty told the interviewer: “Across the world it’s the same problem of delivering healthcare, where 70% of revenues is for salaries alone. What other industry has that? It’s just not sustainable. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

“We would like to show America, just outside their waters, that you can build and provide healthcare for less than half of the costs in the US. The economy of the 21st century is going to be driven by this industry, which is already US$4.5 trillion worldwide, and while the state can provide healthcare with taxpayer’s money, the taxpayers themselves cannot pay. It just can’t work anymore. The costs are too high.

“We have partners from the US in the Cayman Islands, prestigious hospital chains that are not-for-profit, not even listed. We will prove this can be done,” he said.

He addressed fears about medical standards, saying staff were consistently working “operating from morning till night”, and that “as you get bigger, it is actually easier to

maintain standards.“If a patient is unhappy,” he said. “He

just presses the speed dial to connect to the patient complaint system.”

Doctors were also involved in financial decisions, meeting daily to review records and options: ”If a doctor does not understand the financial implications of providing health care, then you can forget about reducing costs. Doctors have to be at the centre of financial management or they won’t get any patients,” he said.

This campaign saw the amount arrested for DUI almost double compared to the same period in 2010 when 37 people were caught.

A spokeswoman for the RCIPS said: “The results of the latest RCIPS festive safety initiative, Operation Christmas Cracker, have confirmed that many of those driving on Cayman’s roads do not deserve to own a driving licence.

“The shocking figures released today, Monday 9 January, state that 62 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI in the six week period between 28 November and 4 January. In addition, 140 were ticketed for speeding.

“But the most disturbing figure is the fact that three people lost their lives on Cayman’s roads over that six week period. While the investigation into all three collisions is still ongoing, early indications are that alcohol and/or speed were contributing factors.”

In addition to the three fatal collisions, another 146 crashes were dealt with by police during the safety campaign and while that figure is considerably down on last year’s number, according to the officer in charge of the RCIPS Traffic Dept., it’s still far too many. ”We commonly hear the term road accidents used,” said Chief Inspector Angelique Howell.

“A road crash is not an “accident” crashes are caused by driver error, speed, driving under the influence or driving dangerously or carelessly.

“Crashes can be avoided - all it takes is for drivers to be aware of their surroundings and be responsible. But unfortunately, once again, our latest safety drive has proved that many of Cayman’s drivers are far from that!

“It’s clear that we still have a long way to go to make our roads as safe as they should be. Three people lost their lives in six weeks, three families lost loved one’s over the festive season – all because people were not responsible.”

However, despite the fact that the 2011/2012 safety campaign has concluded, CI Howell is keen to stress that the end of the campaign does not mean the end of road traffic enforcement - as six drink drivers found out to their cost this weekend.

She added: “Driving under the influence is not acceptable, it destroys lives. Our priority is to

make Cayman’s roads as safe as they can be and our new year’s pledge is to continue to target those who drink and drive 24 hours a day seven days a week.

“Six more people who ignored our warnings were arrested this weekend for DUI. They will now join the 62 locked up during Operation Christmas Cracker in court.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Through a rap verse, Jay-Z has confirmed the birth of “the most beautiful girl in the world” — his newborn daughter.

The song “Glory” made its debut on his social website Life and Times on Monday — two days after he and Beyonce reportedly gave birth to a daughter, Blue Ivy.

Reps for the superstars repeatedly declined requests for comment from The Associated Press about whether the birth had occurred, as first reported by E! News. But Jay-Z’s sweet song gives fans the details, and more: “You’re my child of a child from Destiny’s Child.”

In the song, Jay-Z talks about where the child was conceived (in Paris) and even reveals that Beyonce had a miscarriage at one point.

“Last time the miscarriage was so tragic/We was afraid you’d disappear/But nah baby you magic.” The sound of a baby’s cries ends the song.

It’s the first child for the power couple, who wed in 2008 in a private ceremony after a years-long courtship. Beyonce announced her pregnancy to the world last August at the MTV Video Music Awards with a simple rub of her swollen belly.

Hurley’s Novartis medicine warningHurley’s Marketplace has received notice that Novartis Consumer Health has recalled certain bottles of four of its over-the-counter medications – Excedrin, Bufferin, Gas-X and NoDoz – because they may contain stray pills or capsules from other Novartis products, or contain broken tablets.

Novartis has halted operations at the Lincoln, Neb. plant that manufactured the drugs “to accelerate maintenance and other

improvement activities at the site,” according to a release from the company.

Novaritis is recalling all lots of NoDoz which expire on or before December 20, 2014 and all lots of Gas-X Prevention products which expire December 20, 2013 or earlier.

Additionally, 16 different Excedrin products that expire on or before Dec. 20, 2014 have been recalled, as well as three Bufferin products that expire on or before Dec. 20, 2013.

The Public Works Department this week will build a gate and post warning signs, blocking access to the chief cliff-jumping site near Pedro Castle in the wake of two recent drowning deaths.

“It’s in predominantly one particular area, about three-quarters of a mile past the last house on the road, where it becomes a dirt track,” said Bodden Town Chief Inspector Robert Scotland.

“The road is on private land and the owner, with the National Roads Authority and Public Works, will erect a gate and ‘no trespassing’ signs. It’s a sort of public-private partnership,” he said.

At a Friday meeting in the offices of the Tourism Attraction Board (TAB), Mr Scotland and his Bodden Town deputy; Marine Unit Inspector Clive Smith; Pedro St James‘s Carson Denny Ebanks; TAB CEO Gilbert Connolly; Port Authority security officer Joseph Woods and a representative of the property owner at the cliff-jumping site gained approval for the gate and signposts.

Mr Scotland was unsure about costs, but said they were likely to be shared

between Public Works and the owner, who he declined to identify.

“Public Works has the materials, and the emails to initiate construction have been done, so it will be commenced by Public Works this week.”

He said the gate was likely to be between 12 feet and 15 feet wide, sufficient to block the road and extend into the foliage on either side, and high enough “to serve as a deterrent and a visible reminder that this is private property.”

The move comes in the wake of the 26 December drowning death of Justin Henry, 16, and the similar demise on New Year’s Day of Adam Rankine, 21.

“Education is the key,” Inspector Scotland said. “During an investigation, you find out just how popular this is. It is not, let’s say, a rare occurrence. People have been engaged in this in the past, and while it’s one thing to go into the water when it’s calm, when it is rough, you get a sort of toilet-bowl effect with the currents.

“We ask people to exercise common sense, to use good judgement.”

A second meeting among officials will design a public--education campaign in schools and through the media to discourage people from jumping into the water in the area, but legislation, he said, was another matter.

“Building a barrier and posting

warnings is a good idea, a good step, but if someone wants to bypass the barrier and signs,” Mr Scotland said, “police could do little.”

While legislation “might be an option, the problem is enforcement. We are usually notified of these things afterwards, and if you ban jumping in one place, it just moves to another one.”

Limited police resources would be “stretched” to provide a permanent police presence on the cliffs, he said.

“Education is the only effective way to reach people”, he said. “We are finding more people getting into difficulties there, so we will discuss that, but it has to be district wide. We will visit schools, general assembles, sitting down with young people, explaining the dangers of doing certain things. There is no one-size-fits- all approach.”

Muhammad Ali returning to KY. for 70th birthdayLOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Muhammad Ali is coming home to Louisville to celebrate another milestone — his 70th birthday.

The iconic heavyweight boxing champion will bask in the limelight once again at a private birthday bash on the evening of Jan. 14 at the Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville. Ali turns 70 on Jan. 17. The party will double as a fundraiser for the center — a cultural and education complex that also features a museum focusing on Ali’s long career as a boxer, social activist and humanitarian.

“Louisville was the first to support

Muhammad in his pursuit of gold,” Lonnie Ali, the boxer’s wife, said in a statement Saturday evening. “It is only fitting that Louisville and surrounding communities participate in this important celebration to mark his 70th birthday.”

Ali Center spokeswoman Jeanie Kahnke said Saturday that Ali will be surrounded by old friends and people who made a difference in his life, including his longtime trainer Angelo Dundee. The party will feature a dinner, entertainment and speeches.

She described it as a “retrospective look and celebration” of Ali’s life.

“It’s significant for anyone to turn 70 years old,” Kahnke said. “But for such a global icon, who has literally touched the lives of millions of people, it’s a momentous event to celebrate.”

Snapped bungee plunges tourist into African river CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — An Australian tourist bungee jumping in Africa plunged 365 feet (111 meters) into a river when her cord snapped, but she managed to swim to safety with a broken collarbone and her legs tied together.

Erin Langworthy told Nine Network television news Sunday that she blacked out briefly when she hit the Zambesi River on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe on Dec. 31.

“I felt like I’d been slapped all over,” the 22-year-old from Perth said.

smacking into the river before the current pulled her into rapids.

“You get sucked under and then you pop up so it’s very disorienting — I didn’t know which was up or down,” she said.

She said the trailing cord repeatedly snagged, so she “had to swim down and yank the bungee cord out of whatever it was caught on to make it to the surface.”

Langworthy swam through the rapids to reach the Zimbabwe bank.

Southern Province Police Commissioner Brenda Muntemba told the Post Zambia newspaper that

Langworthy was treated at a clinic in Zimbabwe before being evacuated to South Africa.

The jump from the Victoria Falls Bridge is operated by Safari Par Excellence, whose website describes the bungee experience as “111 meters (365 feet) of pure Adrenalin!”

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Dozens of National Guard troops have arrived to help an Alaska fishing town dig out from massive snows that have collapsed roofs, trapped some people in homes, and triggered avalanches.

Cordova is used to snow, but not like this season’s blanketing.

The Guard reported more than 18 feet of snow has fallen in the past weeks, although the National Weather Service did not immediately have a measurement.

“There’s nowhere to go with the snow because it’s piled up so high,” said Wendy Rainney, who owns the Orca Adventure Lodge. A storage

building for the lodge — which offers fishing trips, hiking, kayaking and glacier tours — partially collapsed under the weight of the snow, she said.

“This is more quantity than can be handled.”

Officials said at least three buildings have collapsed or partially collapsed and six homes are deemed severely stressed by heavy wet snow.

The city has set up a shelter at a local recreation center, but said people leaving homes in avalanche-risky areas have been staying with other residents. Cordova spokesman Allen Marquette said the town also was ready to set up a pet shelter

if necessary.“We had no alternative but to

declare an emergency,” Cordova Mayor Jim Kallander said. “It became a life-safety issue.”

Alaska town tries to dig out from huge snow dump

Bread makers are machines that only bake bread. They claim to make it so super-easy that you can eat freshly-baked bread every day for the rest of your life.

To use a bread maker, just add the ingredients of bread (flour, milk, yeast and so on) and turn it on. The machine will make dough from your ingredients

and then bake it into a loaf of bread. The bread, although tasting good won’t last very long because of the lack of preservatives.

However, you can experiment and be creative with bread makers. Because they make bread so quickly, they make it much more convenient to experiment with ‘strange’ ingredients. You can make bread with your favourite cheese in it, for example, or chocolate, or

some kind of herbs and spices that you like. There are many websites on the Internet devoted entirely to sharing interesting bread maker recipes.

Basically, if you just want bread, you’re probably better off buying it from a shop. If you want unusual, customised experiments in bread, however, then bread makers aren’t very expensive, and getting one could be a good choice for you.

With a General Election a long way off – 14 months to go before nomination day even –

it seems to me far to soon to write the United Democratic Party (UDP) and its leader, Hon. McKeeva Bush off. A week is like a year in politics! One good piece of news is all it takes and everything changes. The UDP is in the driving seat and they are in the best position to see it happens.

If the economy picks up in the USA and there are signs that it is happening (again!), we could feel the knock-on effect here. Tourists not only return but they spend money. Banks start to lend again and businesses start to spring up. Who gets the kudos even if it is undeserved? The government of the day. The UDP. And, at present, there is no effective opposition. Where is it? Does it even exist?

This doesn’t mean the opposition, the People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) is out of the picture. They have had to regroup under a new leader, Hon. Alden McLaughlin. A well educated man, an extremely nice man when you meet him in the street. Courteous. He has been around the political scene a long while. It was said he virtually ran the party under its former leader Kirk Tibbetts. Kirk was popular. He was one of US. By us I mean the people. We all liked Kirk. Even people who didn’t vote for him. He was and still is a nice person. Alden? He comes over as a bit ‘cold.’

Kirk was well as Joan would say – “Cuddly.” Like a “teddy bear”.

And Mr. Bush? Even with a similar physique one could never describe McKeeva as ‘cuddly.’ A bear? Yes. And very wily one. Mr. Bush has had his dark moments when he looked down and out but he has always rebounded back and become even stronger. He learns from his mistakes. He is also lucky and you do need luck to be a politician.

The majority opinion of the public at this moment is the present UDP Government is as popular as a root canal. They are not trusted and their proposals are looked at with

much suspicion.However, the PPM, are about as effective as a string of

cotton trying to pull a bus – even an empty one! They say “no”. They are there to side with every anti government proposal group and ready to call and support a march. They have not publically come up with any alternative proposals of their own to help the economy. Even the lone voice of independent member, Ezzard Miller, is heard louder than their collective voice and the party seems to unite behind him. They do not seem to lead. They did, however, organise a ‘no confidence vote’ on Mr. Bush in the Legislative Assembly, a move that was doomed from the start, but perhaps they weren’t good at arithmetic. All it did was to show the outside world that perhaps the Cayman Islands is not a good place to invest!

People don’t seem to learn from history. Three years ago we had many independents running in the election and small groups of people running under a ‘name’. The same thing is being shouted loud and clear as I write this. How many blogs do you read saying a two party system is not good for Cayman? And what happened in 2009? Only one independent candidate won and he is a well known politician. He has even been a minister. I can boldly make this New Year’s Prediction: If lots of independent run and/or new national teams emerge, there can be only one winner – the UDP.

If people want to rid themselves of the present government they have to vote for the PPM. And if the PPM want to get your vote they have to provide some cohesive opposition with alternative proposals. Alden must lead. He should actually watch McKeeva and dare I say this – COPY – him? Yes. Whatever one might think of Mr. Bush he LEADS!!

2012 Heralds in a new beginning. It’s a new start. Nothing is lost until it really is. And there is still nearly 60 years to go before the next election. A week really is a year in politics.

Decoupage (or découpage) is the technique of sticking to the surfaces of objects made of glass, wood, metal, plastic or ceramic, items of paper cut-outs to make the objects look like painting or inlay work after each layer of paper has been sealed with varnishes. Often multiple coats of varnish are used until the ‘stuck on’ appearance vanishes.

All that is needed is:Acrylic paint, PVA glue for

sticking to chosen material (standard white glue can work if it is diluted with water), objects, motives from different materials, paper material, acrylic lacquer (to solidify the final effect), smoother (popsicle sticks work well), brayer (a specialized tool like a miniature rolling pin designed to help remove wrinkles, remove excess glue and smooth pictures), glue spreader (many things can be use for this - cotton swabs, paint brushes, sponges), cutting utensil (scissors, craft knife or razor blades), and finally rags, sponges, tissue paper to help wipe up glue and other clean up.The most appropriate materials are:

Traditional paper - there are many different kinds of its thickness but it is generally the most difficult material and decorating with it requires a lot of work and good manual skills; soft paper - thin

paper reminding tissue paper or paper storage. Small ornaments can be glued without wetting. It is important not to stick it to dark surface - it will shine through; rice paper - very thin, but much stronger than tissue. It is easy in gluing and transparent. Rice paper is great for large surfaces because it does not rip up or crease. It does not have to be soaked; 3D paper- its weight is similar to traditional paper. Its advantage are ready motives and ornaments for space decoupage. Particular elements of the ornament lay on each other what gives the nub effect; lace.

Before you start with your decoupage project, you must choose your object. Any kind of surface is just fit for decoupage. Now decide if you will be using a picture, magazine or some wallpaper. Whatever you select, ensure that the quality is good, especially if it is a picture. You must scan it using good resolution.

To decoupage, do not cut any picture to give it some other layout, instead tear it along the edges. You can take art from magazines or books and can overlap other art to decoupage your picture. It’s advisable that before you actually paste the art, first put up the whole design and see if that suits your requirement. It’s simple to decoupage a picture to some utility items like furniture, photo album, frames, boxes, vases etc.

To get a smooth finish when pasting the art to any base and you

don’t possess a brayer, use an air spray. To accomplish this all you will require is an air container. Place your picture inclined to the base surface and spray the air on the paper from top to bottom.

It’s important that before you decoupage, you must clean the surface first. Depending on the material the surface is made up of you may need to seal it too. You can clean the dirt on the surface using a cotton brush. At times the surface may require a coat of paint too. A craft knife or a pair of small scissors should be used to cut the minute portions of the pattern.

You may cut a piece from some magazine that has some text written on it. If you do not want this text to be visible, just put a layer of half gesso and half sealer, something like polyurethane, acrylic spray, etc.

In case you decoupage a box, plan out on the corners first and then move inside to design middle of the box. Also keep in mind that in case you use PVA glue on glass you must put in a droplet of glycerin into it. This would ensure that the glue does not dry up quickly.

If you are extending your picture, note that you do not cut the picture, instead tear it so that it has soft and irregular edges. To give gilding a dramatic look, you should dry the

gilt and then paint black Japan on and rag off. Once you put a layer of sealer on to it, it is ready for decoupage or varnish.

In case you decoupage a box with fabric, you must keep the joint at the face of the box; because, as you would open the box, the front won’t be visible, thus the joint would be hidden and only the backside of the box would be seen. If you are not using any cardboard beneath the fabric layers, you must first stick the fabric pieces to the sides of the box and then paste some decorative laces or ribbons onto the top edge so that the unfinished side is not visible.

If you are using pictures for decoupage then you can use a colour photocopier to get the desired deep black picture. You would then notice a remarkable difference between how blacks of colour photocopier look and how the ones from a black and white photocopier look like. However, you must remember that before rushing to the photocopy store, do your calculations, i.e. how much is the image to be resized? Do you need to enlarge or reduce it? You may also just need the image to have the same size. You can actually use this technique to create symmetrical designs.

New PM wants to break ties

Jamaica’s new prime minister has declared that “the time has come” for her country to break its ties to the monarchy.

In her inaugural address, Portia Simpson Miller, first paid tribute to the Queen: “I love the Queen. She is a beautiful lady, and apart from being a beautiful lady, a wise lady and a wonderful lady.”

Simpson Miller then stated, in her speech to a crowd of 10,000, that her administration would “initiate the process of detachment from the monarchy”, converting her country from a constitutional parliamentary democracy to a republic.

A member of the Commonwealth, Jamaica is on the royal itinerary this year marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with Prince Harry scheduled to visit the Caribbean nation later this year. It appears Miller’s plans for a republican form of government are aimed to coincide with this year’s 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence from Britain in 1962.

In the meantime, the Queen remains the head of state and is represented on the island by the governor general, Sir Patrick Allen.

Simpson Miller’s centre-left People’s National Party won a victory over the governing Labour Party in last week’s

parliamentary elections, on a platform that included ditching the monarchy.

Her other orders of business include grappling with the country’s anemic economy, massive debt and a 13 per cent unemployment rate.

A government spokesman said Simpson Miller’s party would first seek an agreement with the opposition before moving ahead with the constitutional changes, which could be made through parliament without a referendum.

He said Simpson Miller hopes to have that deal in place by August, when Jamaica’s independence celebrations will be in full swing.

Jamaican Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has held initial talks with China’s Ambassador to Jamaica on adjusting the structure and implementation of the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP) funded by the Asian country. The discussion with Ambassador Zhen Qingdian took place on Saturday, two days after Simpson Miller was sworn in as the new head of government.

The Prime Minister was accompanied to the meeting by Dr. Omar Davies, Minister of Transport,

Works & Housing, Dr. Peter Phillips, Minister of Finance & Planning and Mr. Robert Pickersgill, Minister of Water, Land & the Environment.

A government statement said the ambassador committed to act immediately to present the administration’s desires during his forthcoming visit to China.

The infrastructural programme is funded through a US$400 million (J$36 billion) loan from China’s Export Import (EXIM) Bank.

Last November, ex-Prime Minister Andrew Holness took control of the

initiative after serious management shortcomings, such as lack of transparency and inadequate capital project planning, were identified in a report by the Auditor General.

Holness said JDIP would be reviewed to improve its accounting, reporting and general management structures.

The controversy led to the resignations of Minister of Transport and Works, Mike Henry and Patrick Wong, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Works Agency, which had programme oversight.

LONDON (AP) — After attending a gala film premiere in a full-length lacy evening gown, Kate Middleton stepped out of the public gaze Monday to celebrate her milestone 30th birthday in private.

She turned heads — and dominated Britain’s Monday morning front pages — by attending the London opening of Steven Spielberg’s “War Horse” wearing a striking design by Alice Temperley. Her husband, Prince William, used an umbrella to keep her glossy brown hair drizzle-free.

It was another star turn for Middleton, who has appeared ever more comfortable in public since joining the royal family in April.

Palace officials said the Duchess of Cambridge’s birthday celebration will be a “low-key and private” affair. The choice of a muted event seems appropriate: After all, the duchess is not just starting the fourth decade of her life — she is also embarking on her career as a future queen, charged with renovating a monarchy that has become somewhat creaky with age.

“She’s done very well, playing a very good supporting role to Prince William and complementing him as part of a team,” said Robert Jobson, author of “William and Kate: The Love Story.” ‘’We’ve not seen much of her, but when she’s in public she has performed with aplomb.”

The past year has seen momentous changes for Kate, with a fairytale wedding to Prince William, travels around the world and glamorous appearances that marked her transition from commoner to the world’s most talked-about princess and style icon. She has won rave reviews for her sparkle, her elegant sense of style, and her common touch with the public.

But now that the excitement around her grand wedding has subsided, she is expected to quietly settle down into her royal duties — and for much of this year, that means helping Queen Elizabeth II celebrate her Diamond Jubilee, without upstaging the monarch in her moment of glory, and also playing a supporting role at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Until recently, palace officials have been quiet about what exactly her role will be, keen to protect her transition

into a fully fledged royal from the glare of the media limelight. The newlyweds, who live in a remote corner of north Wales, were said to favor a “quieter life” after the massive global media coverage of their April wedding.

The former Middleton ventured out on her first solo engagement in October

— a private charity dinner for about 30 guests — but is yet to make a public speech on her own.

That is set to change. This week, royal officials finally gave the first insight into her new role when they announced which charities she’s supporting, including the Scouts and a group that helps drug addicts. More organizations will follow later, officials said.

She has already taken on an unofficial role as a champion of the British fashion industry, wearing the creations of British designers at home and abroad, showcasing their work in the best possible light.

On top of such duties, the duchess also has a busy year ahead with the queen’s jubilee, a major celebration of the monarch’s 60 years on the throne that will see numerous celebrations

throughout Britain and the Commonwealth, peaking in a major celebration in London in early June.

The royals are expected to play a supporting role by traveling overseas to represent the queen. William and Kate are due to journey to Malaysia, Singapore, the Solomon Islands and the tiny Pacific island of Tuvalu as part of the festivities.

Inevitably, much of the speculation about the duchess’ future has centered on royal lineage — Is she going to start a family soon? That, however, is anyone’s guess, and despite incessant tabloid baby chatter, there doesn’t yet appear to be great pressure on the newlyweds to produce an heir.

“It’s early days yet, and they’re both getting used to their roles,” said Jobson, adding that the presence of other young members of the royal household, such as Prince Harry, helps to ease the pressure on William and Kate.

Many of the more senior women in the royal family were mothers in their 20s, but times and expectations have changed — both inside and outside the royal household.

A delicious solution to combat lionfish - an invasive fish species threatening the marine ecosystem off Grand Cayman’s shores is to eat them!

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink in Camana Bay and Ambassador Divers have exclusively partnered on a new Lionfish Safari package offering parties of up to six guests at a time the opportunity to join professional Divemasters and instructors in the hunt to spear lionfish on the open water. Divers will “spot” lionfish over the course of two dives, while staff members spear and collect them. Upon returning from the outing, the freshly caught lionfish will be cleaned and delivered to executive chef Thomas Tennant at the restaurant, where the group will meet later that evening to feast on the morning’s catch – all the while stemming the proliferation of this voracious predator.

“Lionfish Safari is a great opportunity for diners to help save the reefs and enjoy a delicious, spontaneous meal,” says executive chef Thomas Tennant. “At the same time, they get to see – and be – the very source of the main ingredient.”

In the Caribbean, Indo Pacific Red Lionfish have no natural predators; they are skilled at out-competing the native species like the Nassau grouper and are eating an unsustainable amount of juvenile reef fish. A single adult female can lay as many as 30,000 eggs every four days. Native to the tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean, the fish is said to have been accidentally released in the Carolinas and for the past several years has been invading the waters off the Florida Keys and Cayman Islands. Since 2008, the Cayman Islands have been fighting these glutinous eaters as they prey on the fish that maintain the health of the Islands’ reefs.

“Stings from the spines of the red lionfish’s dorsal fin are rarely fatal, but can be uncomfortable and cause nausea so they must be handled by licensed fishermen,” explains Jason Washington of Ambassador Divers. “The good news is that it is completely safe to consume once the venomous spines are carefully removed. The Lionfish Safari will help keep the population under control to preserve the health and beauty of the reefs, all the while providing fun and adventure.”

For two days before the much anticipated Taste of Cayman culinary event this past January, more than 100 divers assembled by Washington, in partnership with the Department of the Environment, to remove what amounted to 300 pounds of lionfish meat. Using the catch the main ingredient for his event tasting station, chef Tennant prepared Lionfish Escabeche, Cayman-style, with roasted tomato, Worcestershire, pickled vegetables, avocado, extra virgin olive oil, scallion, and cilantro.

Grandmother Medsadie “Meddie” Connor is the latest victim of gun crime that’s spiraling out of control.

And as the 57 year old mom of two recovers in hospital after she was shot twice during yet another senseless armed robbery, Police Commissioner David Baines has blasted: “This has to stop now before people are killed.”

Ms Connor was finishing work at Lorna’s Gas Station in Bodden Town late on Wednesday night.

As she walked to her car a gunman leapt from bushes and demanded cash. Despite handing over the contents of her handbag the

cowardly thief still shot her twice.Ms Connor, who also has six

grandchildren, is recovering in hospital. Miraculously her injuries are not life threatening.

She is the second innocent victim to suffer gunshot wounds during botched stick-ups in just two weeks.

Brewery worker Kemar Golding was helping a pal close up the jerk chicken stand in Red Bay when thieves struck.

He was shot in the face and has lost the sight in one eye.

Now Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Commissioner Baines has spoken out and revealed

they are investigating the possibility the two crimes are linked.

“We’ve now had two people seriously injured in the last two weeks as a result of robbery related shootings,” said Mr. Baines. “The violence used is completely disproportionate to the potential gain.

“In the jerk stand shooting nothing was taken. On Wednesday night a woman was shot in the shoulder and leg for her handbag which contained a small sum of cash. We could potentially have been dealing with two murders.”

Profiles of those to be honoured by the QueenAdeniyi Collins OremuleColonial Police MedalAdeniyi Collins Oremule has a passion for justice, for making a difference in the lives of others and for protecting his community. As a Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Detective Inspector he lives by his employer’s motto: “We care, we listen, we act.”

“This is the very essence of delivering justice,” he explains. And it is this enthusiasm to do the right thing which is forever driving Mr. Oremule -- a serving officer for the past 16 years – to stand up for victims and witnesses of crime.

While it is clear that he has found his calling, Mr. Oremule never set out to become a police officer, certainly not a detective in the Cayman Islands. Growing up in Nigeria’s Ogun state, Mr. Oremule was raised in a family of business people and travellers which gave him an appetite for adventure. As a young man, he journeyed to Europe, then the United States and eventually found his way to Cayman purely by chance.

Immediately charmed by the

people’s friendliness and community spirit, he subsequently returned as a visitor several times. Ultimately deciding to make the Islands his permanent home, he swapped his world travels for a uniform, signing up as a police recruit in 1996.

Soft-spoken yet resolute Mr. Oremule applied his signature determination to his new career, steadily advancing through the ranks. Starting out as a uniformed constable at the George Town Police Station, he soon transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and subsequently headed the Bodden Town CID, as well as the West Bay CID where he was promoted to sergeant. Ambitious, he used every opportunity to complete the necessary local and international certifications to finally advance to detective inspector.

In addition to being an exceptional investigator and showing a unique compassion for victims and witnesses of crime, Mr. Oremule has also been hailed as the quintessential civil servant – courteous, professional and always ready to serve.

These attributes earned him the

Governor’s Five Star Award for Customer Service Excellence (FACE) in 2010. Upon receiving this accolade he said: “Being a detective is about more than just meeting the challenges, it is also about commitment, courtesy, politeness, responsiveness, problem solving and professionalism.”

Upon receiving the Colonial Police Medal for going above and beyond to protect his community, Mr. Oremule expressed humble surprise. Exhibiting another of his well-known traits, he simply stated: “I am very honoured to receive this recognition. I express heartfelt appreciation for the person who nominated me for this award as well as for the support of my colleagues and family. I will continue to offer my services to my community as long as God spares my life.”

His Excellency the Governor, Mr. Duncan Taylor, CBE has announced that Mr. Philip Michael Jackson has been awarded the Cayman Islands Certificate and Badge of Honour (Cert. Hon.) for services to training and mentoring Caymanians in the vocational field of auto mechanics.

Automotive service technicians inspect, maintain, and repair automobiles and light trucks. Mr. Jackson, now a veteran mechanic, is one of the Cayman Islands’ pioneers in this industry, having developed his passion for cars into a rewarding career over the past 46 years.

The owner of Auto Craft Ltd., the master certified mechanic has contributed to the development of the local automotive industry while adapting to meet the changing demands of the industry.

Skilful with his hands Mr Jackson first realised he was meant to be a mechanic when, as a teen, he repaired a BMW Isetta, and a 1948 Morris Ten. The experience of working on those two cars shaped the beginning of what turned out to be an impressive career.

Mr. Jackson states, “Being a mechanic is something I always loved to do. I grew up working on cars and airplanes and found it to be thoroughly enjoyable.”

As he gained his formal certification in the United States, Mr. Jackson set a goal to operate his own garage. He soon realised that dream, after which he started mentoring and training other young mechanics in preparation

for their employment with major automotive franchises.

In so doing he realised that, as a mentor, he could help fuel this passion in younger generations of mechanics. He focussed on this pursuit for many years, assisting dozens of young people.

Mr. Jackson, a member of the International Society of Automotive Engineers and the Mobile Air Conditioning Society, continues to mentor and share his experiences at his George Town shop. He was recently commended for his involvement with the Passport2Success programme – once again helping students gain experience and knowledge as foundations for careers in the industry.

His vision and passion helped build an important service industry, and many Caymanian mechanics and dealership owners name Mr. Jackson as their mentor.

Mr. Jackson currently resides in Grand Cayman and has two sons.

KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) — Steve Stricker might be tempted to dream of the traditional winner’s lei draped around his neck after building a five-shot lead going into the final round of the Tournament of Champions.

No one has ever lost a lead that large since the PGA Tour’s season opener moved to Kapalua in 1999.

Stricker, though, probably knows better.

All he has to do is look back to the Memorial last year, when he had a four-shot lead with nine holes to play — and a three-shot lead with only five holes to play — and hung on to win by one shot.

Or he could recall the Northern Trust Open at Riviera two years ago, when he led by six shots after 54 holes. Five holes into the final round, his lead already was down to two shots and he was starting to sweat in the cool weather of California in February. He held on to win by two shots over Luke Donald.

If his memory is short — he does turn 45 next month — all Stricker has to do is consider Sunday at Kapalua.

He started the third round on another gorgeous day in paradise

with a five-shot lead, and he walked off the 18th green with a 4-under 69 to lead by the same margin over defending champion Jonathan Byrd (67), Martin Laird (67) and Webb Simpson (69).

Only it wasn’t that simple.Stricker had played the par 5s

in 9-under par the opening two rounds. In the third round, he had to get up-and-down just to save par on the par 5s on the front nine. He had his first three-putt bogey of the week on the par-3 eighth.

His lead was down to three shots at the turn, then two shots when Simpson birdied the 10th, and finally one shot when Simpson had a tap-in birdie at the 12th, and Byrd made four birdies in five holes ahead of them.

“You’re playing with a five-shot lead. It’s a tough situation,” Stricker said. “I’ve been there before, and it’s hard. I find it very difficult. You’re in a position where you don’t want to screw up, but yet you’re on a course that birdies can be made and guys can come from a ways back. You need to make birdies. It’s kind of that fine line.”

The good news for Stricker on Sunday is that he never lost his patience, and he never lost the lead.

Simpson, who played in the final group with him, twice had birdie putts from the 30-foot range to share the lead. Byrd had a 4-foot birdie putt on the 16th that he left woefully short. And once Stricker got to the closing stretch on the Plantation Course, he played it the same way he had the opening two rounds.

Stricker ran off four straight birdies, including a chip-in from the front of the 16th green, to restore his cushion. Through three rounds, he has played the five-hole closing stretch in 13-under par.

“That was key to finish that way,” said Stricker, who was at 19-under 200.

At least he knows what to expect on Monday.

The only other PGA Tour event that ends on a Monday — at least on purpose — is the Deutsche Bank Championship outside Boston, and that’s only because it ends on Labor Day.

The tour thought it would try something new by taking the Tournament of Champions into

a Monday. The idea was to get away from the NFL playoffs, even though Tim Tebow was done working his magic in the last playoff game as the leaders were making their way up the ninth fairway. The tournament is supposed to end in time for the BCS Championship game.

That shouldn’t be a problem for LSU alum David Toms, the only player yet to shoot par this year who will tee off as a single in the morning. The way play has gone the last few days, the tournament should end before kickoff, although even in twosomes, the third round stretched nearly 4½ hours.

It was a beautiful day to be on the Plantation Course. As the last group walked toward the 10th green, in the Pacific below a pair of humpback whales were flipping their tails furiously, captivating the gallery. Behind the 11th green offers a splendid view of Honolua Bay, and the surf was sensational. Even from atop cliffs, it was easy to see the curl, and surfers taking on more than they could handle.

The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CIOC) will be sending a team to participate in the Inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria from January 13th – 22nd 2012. The games are an international multi-sport event for winter sports, held under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) were first held in Singapore in 2010. The games will be held every four years in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games format. The idea of such an event was introduced by Johann Rosenzopf from Austria in 1998. On July 6, 2007 the IOC approved the creation of a youth version of the Olympic Games. The costs of hosting the event will be shared by the IOC and the host city, while the travel costs of athletes and coaches are paid by the IOC.

The Games will also feature cultural exchange programs and opportunities for participants to meet Olympic athletes. Innsbruck 2012 aims to inspire young people around the world to embrace, embody and express the Olympic Values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship. Olympic traditions will meet modernity. The vibrant youth culture of Innsbruck will create an ideal atmosphere for welcoming the world and making these Youth Olympic Games an unforgettable

experience. Participating athletes must be between the ages of 14 and 18.

Caymanian athlete Dean Travers will represent the Cayman Islands at the games, following in the footsteps of his older brother Dow who represented Cayman at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Dean is a freshman at Aspen High School, and he competes for the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club. He began skiing at age 2, when his family began vacationing at Beaver Creek. His mother, Mary Ann Travers, was born in England and raised in Montreal and the Caribbean Islands. Dean’s father, Anthony “Tony” Travers, practices law in the Cayman Islands. The family has a home in the Cayman Islands where they at varying times each year.

The support team for Dean will be Jennifer Powell as Chef de Mission, Jake Zamansky as coach and Dow Travers as an additional official to assist the coach on the slopes. Jennifer is presently employed with the CIOC as an Administrative Officer, and being a young Chef de Mission fulfills the ideals of the Youth Games. Dow will bring a wealth of experience to the slopes in support of his brother, along with coach Jake. CIOC President Donald McLean will attend in support of the team.

Dean will compete in the Alpine skiing event Giant Slalom, which is scheduled for January 19th 2012.

Dean took the bronze medal in the 2009 giant slalom at the Whistler Cup, and the gold medal in the super-G race in 2011 at the Whistler Cup in British Columbia. The CIOC is confident that Dean will prove to be a respectable representative of the Cayman Islands in his sport.

The Opening Ceremony for the Games will take place on Friday January 13th at the Bergisel Stadium from 5:30pm – 8pm, with the Closing Ceremony planned for January 22nd from 6:45 pm – 8pm at the Medals Plaza, Maria-Theresien-Strabe.

Cayman to participate in winter youth Olympics

Mark Hughes will hold more talks with QPR on Tuesday about taking over as manager after initial positive negotiations on Monday.

The former Wales boss is favourite to replace Neil Warnock, who was sacked on Sunday, with QPR 17th in the league.

Hughes, speaking outside Loftus Road, said: “There’s a lot more to discuss and we’ll wait until the morning.

“We’re still discussing the ideas the club have. I’m pleased with how it’s gone but nothing is confirmed yet.”

Hughes, who has been out of the game since leaving Fulham in June, added: “I’ve got to think very carefully about what’s been said today.

“We have to discuss a number of things but it went well.

“It’s about thinking things over and we’ll see what happens in the morning.

“I’m an ambitious manager and hopefully the next club I’m at can match those ambitions.”

Chief executive Philip Beard said that he hoped the club could make an appointment in the next

48 hours.“We are working extremely

hard to bring in the right person,” Beard told BBC Radio 5 Live earlier on Monday.

“I’m hoping we have someone in place in advance of our game against Newcastle [on Sunday].”

QPR host Chelsea if they can overcome MK Dons in a replay, while Sunderland entertain neighbours Middlesbrough.

The fifth round will definitely include a League One team after Stevenage drew Notts County.

Wrexham, who drew 1-1 at Championship side Brighton on Saturday, will earn a home tie with Newcastle if they can win their replay.

Macclesfield could face more Premier League opposition in Swansea if they can win their replay at Bolton, after drawing 2-2 with Owen Coyle’s side at Moss Rose.

Paolo di Canio’s Swindon’s reward for knocking Wigan out is a trip to either Nottingham Forest or Leicester, while Crawley head to Championship side Hull.

There could be as many as six all-Premier League ties, with Everton hosting Fulham, Norwich travelling to West Brom and Aston Villa awaiting Arsenal if the Gunners can get past Leeds on Monday night.

Suarez will be suspended for the match at Anfield but will be available after his eight-match ban when Liverpool head to Old Trafford in the Premier League on 11 February.

Liverpool announced last week that they would not be appealing against the ban, and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson rejected suggestions that the two clubs should hold conciliatory talks over the situation.

It is understood the Football Association plans to contact both clubs before the game in an effort to reduce the tension between the sides.

United, who progressed with a 3-2 win over neighbours City on Sunday, knocked Liverpool out in the third round of last year’s competition, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford in the first game of Kenny Dalglish’s second spell in charge.

But Liverpool were victorious in the club’s last FA Cup meeting at Anfield, with Peter Crouch’s effort sealing a 1-0 win over United in the fourth round in 2006.

United striker Wayne Rooney, who scored twice in the victory over City and started his career at Everton, is relishing the short trip to Anfield.

He wrote on Twitter: “What a draw for [the] next round. Another big game. Can’t wait for it already.”

Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam tweeted: “Great draw, Man United at home. That’s the FA Cup.”

Manchester United’s former Liverpool striker Michael Owen said: “And people talk about United always getting lucky cup draws! It couldn’t get much tougher. What a game to look forward to.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea captain John Terry could make a first return to Loftus Road since he was accused

of racially abusing QPR defender Anton Ferdinand, a matter which has become the subject of a criminal case and an accusation which he strenuously denies.

Terry is due to face a racially aggravated public order charge at West London Magistrates’ Court on 1 February, although the case is likely to be adjourned for anything up to 10 weeks. Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill is already looking forward to his first North East derby at the Stadium of Light.

He told ITV: “It’s a tough one but we’re at home. I wonder what Lee Cattermole [who started his career at Middlesbrough] thinks?”

The 2011/2012 CUC Primary Football League (PFL) Playoffs resumed this past Saturday, January 7 with a full schedule of games in the Under 9 and Under 11 divisions.

Schools competing in the Under 9 Consolation Cup got their first chance to impress the crowd as Cayman International School drew 1-1 with Triple C, George Town Primary defeated Red Bay Primary 2-0 and Prospect Primary overpowered Truth For Youth 4-0.

In the Under 9 Champions Cup, Group B champions Cayman Prep continued their undefeated run with a convincing 4-0 win over Savannah Primary. Group A champions Sir John A. Cumber Primary secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over West Bay neighbours Grace Academy, St. Ignatius Prep lost 1-2 to a very well organised South Sound Schools and Bodden Town Primary scored a late equalizer to draw 1-1 with NorthEast Schools.

In the Under 11 Consolation Cup, Bodden Town Primary scored four against Prospect Primary on their way to a convincing 4-1 win and NorthEast School defeated Cayman International School 3-1.

To conclude an already successful and exciting day, the Under 11 Champions Cup games took centre-

stage. Undefeated Sir John A. Cumber Primary were relentless as they overcame a stubborn Triple C outfit 5-2, George Town Primary continued their winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Red Bay Primary and Grace Academy held St. Ignatius Prep to a 0-0 draw.

In the day’s featured game, Cayman Prep was determined to gain their first points of the 2011/2012 Playoffs after going down 1-4 to Sir John A. Cumber Primary on the first day of the Playoffs in December. Next up for the Prepsters – Truth For Youth.

With All-Primary standouts Kareem Foster and Nicholas Chung

in the line-up along with Christian Dyer, Truth For Youth would not falter easily. Likewise, with David Pitcairn and Jonah Narborough leading the attack for Cayman Prep, spectators were in for a goal feast.

Truth For Youth quickly took the lead as Kareem Foster slotted home his team’s first after a dazzling run. Two more goals in quick succession gave the Truth For Youth outfit a commanding lead. Not to be outdone, Cayman Prep scored just before halftime as David Pitcairn was tripped in the box and from the resulting penalty, Cayman Prep was back in the game.

Jonah Narborough opened the second half scoring for Cayman Prep with a wonderful strike but Truth For Youth struck back quickly to maintain their two goal cushion at 4-2. Cayman Prep’s Matthew Haynes brought the Prepsters within one late in the second half but Truth For Youth held on for the 4-3 win.
