Break the Ice
Audio Transcripts:
My name is Janet. I’m a second-year student in the Department of Chemistry.
It’s hard to manage on a student’s budget. I never have enough money for my
monthly expenses. My rent is NT$5,000. I buy food at cheap stores, so I pay
NT$2,000 each month for groceries. I don’t have to pay a lot to my school. My
tuition is NT$7,000 a semester, so I put aside NT$1,500 every month. I have to
take a bus every day to get to school. I spend NT$1,000 on transportation. My
parents give me NT$4,500 every month. I also have a part-time job at the
library. My salary there is NT$7,000. I spend about NT$900 on entertainment,
like movies and clubs. My cell phone bill is usually NT$400. As you can see,
student life is tough — I have a small income and way too many expenses!

My family wasn’t always well-off. A few years ago, my father
started his own business, and the whole family helped out. In the
beginning, we lived from month to month. However, our business
became famous. We worked long hours at the store and made sure to
offer good products and service. As our reputation grew, we began to
have a modest income. As the business became more successful, we
opened stores in other places. We were able to have a nice, steady
income. Today my family is wealthy. Hopefully, our good luck will
continue.

It’s difficult to save money as a student. I work two part-time
jobs, and I still barely make ends meet. I have credit card bills to pay
off, and I have to pay rent. I live from month to month, and I find it
difficult to get by. I save a lot of money cooking at home. Hopefully, I will
have enough money to pay for another semester of tuition. I graduate
next year. My dream is to be able to use this college degree to get a
high-paying job and become wealthy.

Managing money as a student is hard. Students have to pay
for housing, textbooks, tuition, and nights out with friends. If
they manage their assets wisely, though, they can be like

with a Porsche!

How did Steven Ortiz do this? He simply traded what he had f
or something more valuable. One day, Steven decided to exc

one for an iPod, the iPod for a dirt bike, the dirt bike for a com
puter, and so on.
49
Steven discovered that people were willing to give unneeded
expensive things for less expensive things. Eventually, he got
a Ford Bronco, and then he used it to get a Porsche! When he
began, he was 15 years old and couldn’t even drive yet. It
took him two years and 14 trades to get to the Porsche.
