NEW TO HIGHER ED? CHECK OUR ECSI’S TRAINING SUGGESTIONS
Perkins Loan Regulations As a new employee, it is essential that you understand the laws that govern the way the Perkins Loan Program should be managed. ECSI’s Training and Development department suggests that you start by familiarizing yourself with the regulations. The Department of Ed publishes a Federal Student Aid Handbook each academic year on the IFAP Website (Information for Financial Aid Professionals). The Handbook covers all the Federal Regulations for the specific award year shown. The Federal Perkins Loan Program includes Federal Perkins Loans, National Direct Student Loans, and Defense Loans prior to July 1, 1972. Volume Six – Managing Campus Based Programs - of the handbook mandates how a school should manage their Perkins Loan Program. Use the link below to select the current award year and view the chapters shown below under Volume Six. http://www.ifap.ed.gov/ifap/byAwardYear.jsp?type=fsahandbook
Chapter 3: Making a Perkins Loan Chapter 4: Perkins Repayment, Forbearance,
& Deferment Chapter 5: Perkins Cancellations Chapter 6: Perkins Billing, Collection, and

The following Videos are also available to provide a high level overview of the Federal Perkins Loan Regulations:
o Perkins Regs 101 (Making a Perkins Loan) o Perkins Regs 201 (Repayment, Forbearance &
Deferments) o Perkins Regs 301 (Cancellations)
Health Professions Program If your school disburses Health Loans, it is important that you are aware of the laws regulating these types of loans. The US Dept. of Health and Human Services manages the regulations regarding Health Professions Loan Program. The following loans are included: Health Professions Student Loans, Loans for Disadvantages Students and Primary Care Loans. The most current regulations that we have been able to find are from October 2000.
