Mercer is your place to enjoy life, spend time with family and friends (both old and new), and make memories that last a lifetime. While you’re here be sure to stop and visit Claire d’ Loon! Born on May 22, 1981, Claire is located on the grounds of the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce and is Wisconsin’s largest loon. Standing 16’ tall and weighing 2000 lbs., this giant loon celebrates Mercer’s title of “Loon Capital of the World”TM.

Mercer was designated as Loon Capital of the World due to the unusually dense population, including the highest concentration of nesting loon pairs in the continental United States. We are proud of our loons, and many Mercer area residents are actively involved in “Loon Watch,” a citizen-based project that has been monitoring lake health and loon production for over 15 years. The project has also strategically placed numerous artificial nesting platforms, increasing loon nesting success in the area.

Stop by the Chamber’s interactive podium (available spring through fall) to hear the four primary loon calls and learn more about loons. Don’t forget to have your photo taken with Claire d’ Loon, Wisconsin’s largest loon!

SNOWMOBILINGMercer – the “Snow Capital of Wisconsin” -- is synonymous with snowmobiles, smooth trails and great trailside amenities.

An incredible 450 miles of scenic snowmobile trails await vis-itors to Iron County. Three dedicated snowmobile clubs groom the trails after each snowfall. Each winter season sees over 200 inches of snow, guaranteeing snowmobilers great riding in Wis-consin’s Northwoods!

The Mercer Sno-Goers Snowmobile Club is one of those clubs that keeps trails clear and well marked, as well as nicely groomed. Each January, the Sno-Goers host their very popular Winter Blast party complete with food, refreshments, music and dancing to the wee hours.

A bunch of your riding will be on former railroad corridors, smooth freeways to your next destination; other trails will be like Rustic Roads – following eskers and under trees laden with snow. The trails connect to those in adjoining counties and even up into Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. You’ll never have to ride the same trail twice – unless you want to!

Among riders’ favorites is Corridor 8. It takes riders west of Mercer, past the Lake of the Falls scenic area and the Turtle-Flam-beau Flowage toward Ashland County. Trail 19 winds through the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest south to Man-itowish.

NORDIC AND ALPINE SKIINGThere are three excellent cross-country ski trail systems in Iron County – one very near Mercer and the others within a short drive. Among the picks should be the MECCA multi-use trails just south of Mercer. In addition to the excellent groomed trails, they offer delicious cookies on weekends!

The trails cross rolling terrain and offer beautiful open vistas of the Little Turtle River and Flowage. There is a rustic warming cabin on the Little Turtle.

The 18 kilometers of scenic and signed trails accommodate both classic and freestyle aficionados, and the various loops are ideally suited for beginners and advanced skiers. Snowshoers have their own trail and can traverse the skating portion of the trail.

The Mercer Cross-County Ski Association (MECCA) grooms af-ter each snowfall and before each weekend. The trail’s daily, an-nual and family membership fees are all reasonably priced. Stay in the loop with free Nordic trail maps available at the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce office.

The Montreal Trails pass by the remnants of the Montreal Mining operation and provide a variety of options to ski the right distance and difficulty for your ability.

For the ultimate in scenic beauty and challenging skiing, the Uller Trail surpasses all others. It winds through the Penokee Range for 19 miles to Hurley. If that’s too much trail, try the spur

trails for a taste of the scenery without the distance.The Cedar Trail in Gurney follows ravines and plateaus to Lake Superior. Look for trail

signs on Hwy. 51 and Beachway Road on Mercer’s south side or Highway 51 and County Road FF north of Mercer.

Alpine skiing for the family is available just a short distance away. All the more reason to make Mercer your winter headquarters for fun!

SNOWSHOEINGSnowshoeing is a fast growing sport and offers fun for the entire family. The great thing about this sport is that it doesn’t require groomed trails and can be done virtually anywhere there is snow, however, we do have a few places that have outlined routes as a guide through the forests. Snowshoeing really doesn’t take much skill and is an amazing opportunity to burn 45% more calories than walking.

ICE FISHINGWith more than 200 lakes, Iron County welcomes hard water anglers. There are loads of walleye, pike and bass, along with perch, ’gills and crappies in our lakes. A good lake map and an electronic depth finder will help locate fish. Being on the ice doesn’t mean frozen toes. An ice fishing tent or shack, heater, four-wheel drive vehicles, snowmobiles and ATVs provide easy enjoyment of the frozen lakes. Stop at Mercer’s sport shops for the latest gear, minnows, grubs and fishing tips.

The Mercer area hosts fishing tournaments each winter. Even if you don’t land the big one to claim a top prize, there’s always a raffle drawing that will bring a smile if you hold the winning ticket.

L ooking for some four-wheeled adventures? Iron County is home to the largest All Terrain Vehicle trail system in Wisconsin, with over 250 miles of picturesque trails,

most of which branch out from the Mercer area. Whether touring on your ATV or UTV, you will find our trails offer year round scenic views of nature, wildlife, lakes and waterfalls. The trails wind through the forests with varying terrain ranging from smooth flat surfaces to rocky reefs and of course mud too!

During the winter season from December 1st through March 31st, ATV/UTVs are welcome on some designated snowmobile trails as long as the average daily temperature is less than 30 degrees in order to protect the winter trail base. (Look for both ATV and Snowmobile signs)

Mercer area businesses offer excellent lodging and dining opportunities along the trails with a variety of friendly pit stops that supply food, beverages, and gas. Day trippers may park their vehicles/trailers along Railroad Street or on the opposite side of

trail 17 downtown Mercer between the red caboose and Highway J.

In the fall during the spectacular splash of fall colors, Mercer hosts the annual Pumpkin Run ATV Rally on Columbus Day weekend featuring a poker run throughout the Iron County trails, the great pumpkin parade, games, food, trail riding and most importantly, FUN!

Our local club, the Mercer Dusty Loons, does a great job maintaining and signing the trails for all to enjoy. Trails are open year round except during the spring thaw that usually takes place sometime in March through early May. We kindly remind everyone to stay only on marked trails and Wisconsin law requires all ATV/UTVs to display current WI registration stickers and license plate or an out of state visitor trail pass.

Mercer Area Lakes


The greater Mercer area and its environs are a silent sports secret that’s starting to get out. No matter the season, the scenic beauty of the forest and sparkling lakes is a delight.

The Mercer area boasts over 377,000 acres of public land and more than 214 lakes, including the famous Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area, which encompasses the 14,000-acre Tur-tle-Flambeau Flowage.

In addition to abundant paddling and camping opportunities, there are numerous hiking trails (some of which are also win-ter-use Nordic skiing and snowshoe trails).

Biking enthusiasts are encouraged to check out our annual Lu-pine Junefest when they can choose from four tour options on paved county roads through rolling hills and past lakes, rivers,

forests, wildlife and miles of colorful lupines throughout the southern part of Iron County.

Mercer has a new paved hike/bike path stretching 7 miles from the downtown area south to Vilas County. It will eventually tie into the expansive Northern Highlands Regional Trail System net-work. (See related story.)

Either in Iron County, or just a short drive away, are numerous mountain bike trails with awesome single tracks that will chal-lenge the off-road warrior within you, while others are friendly to families seeking an easy bike outing.

You can pick up treats at Mercer area eateries for your trip, or stop for a meal and kick back with a libation upon your return.

A Place to Ride, Hike, Paddle & Relax

Silent Sports

Mercer continues to build on its reputation as a great outdoors destination with the addition of a 7-mile paved hike/bike trail that extends from the communi-

ty south to Vilas County.

Completed in 2016, the Mercer Hike/Bike Trail took more than a dozen of years of dedicated community support through plan-ning, grants and fundraising to make this dream possible. And now you can reap the benefits.

The northern trailhead is at the Snow’s Family Market on Mer-cer’s south side. The trail continues south on its own path par-alleling U.S. Hwy. 51 to the county line. It’s family-friendly and offers great scenery.

Three stretches are paved with asphalt while other sections follow the lightly used Plunkett Road, Manitowish River Access

Road and Old Hwy. 51. A 40-foot bridge was placed over the Manitowish River via the Manitowish River Access Road to ac-commodate the hikers and bikers.

There’s a good chance you’ll spot wildlife, including white-tailed deer, fox, turkey, coyote, squirrels and native birds on the trail, which goes through the Northern Highland-American Legion Forest.

We also offer several hundred miles of unpaved, single tracked mountain bike routes on county land. Hikers and hunters use these trails throughout the spring/summer/fall seasons. The beautiful Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Wilderness Waters Area, near Mercer in Iron County, enjoys a sterling reputation in the Midwest as a top producer of trophy

walleye, bass and muskie. The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage has also long been a favorite of paddlers, campers and wildlife watchers.

Together with Trude Lake, the wilderness area comprises nearly 19,000 acres of pristine water and 35,500 acres of public land for all to enjoy and experience.

If you love chasing fish, you’ll find no better body of water than the Turtle-Flambeau, which welcomes anglers through all four seasons, including for several annual tournaments.

Our local sport shops have the bait, gear and advice to get you catching game fish and panfish on the Turtle-Flambeau as your destination or on one of the other dozens of quality lakes that surround Mercer. Knowledgeable guides will put you on catchable fish, whether you’re with a buddy or the kids. And comfortable lodging facilities and great restaurants await you.

The flowage is also popular with kayakers and canoeists and many continue their adventure on the North Fork of the Flambeau River, which exits the Turtle-Flambeau and goes for 26 miles to Park Falls. There are hiking and hunting trails in this wilderness area to enjoy also.

ABOUT THE FLOWAGEThe flowage came into existence in 1926 when the Chippewa and Flambeau Improvement Company built a dam on the Flambeau River to capture the energy of that river and that of the Turtle River. The project topped 16 small lakes and flooded more than

14,000 acres. Three rivers and several creeks flow into it. There are 195 islands and 212 miles of winding shoreline of which 95% is in public ownership.

In 1992, the Turtle-Flambeau was officially designated a protected wilderness area, ensuring its rugged beauty and unspoiled wild character would be enjoyed by generations to come.

There are 60 remote campsites accessible by water only. Contact the Mercer Ranger Station at (715) 476-2240 for a map of their locations. On the west side of the flowage is Lake of the Falls Campgrounds and the site of an old fish hatchery. The picturesque Lake of the Falls requires a camera! Picnic facilities are available. Daily park use and camping permits required.

The flowage is maintained for hydroelectric production so lake levels will rise and fall according to rainfall and the needs of the hydroelectric plant. Keep in mind that the flowage has countless stumps, logs and shallow rock bars so caution is required in many areas. A Turtle-Flambeau Flowage Association map, which includes accommodations and services, is available.

The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is about 375 miles from Chicago, 300 miles from Milwaukee and 275 miles from Minneapolis. It is easily accessible from U.S. Highway 51 in Mercer via County Highway FF.

No matter which of the categories you fall in – angler, biker, hiker, hunter, bird watcher – simply dial up one of the local shops or the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce and see where it takes you. You won’t be disappointed. And you’ll leave our remarkable area with memories for a lifetime!

Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Wilderness Areabeckons nature lovers, anglers


The Turtle-Flambeau Flowage is an angler’s rare opportuni-ty to experience Canadian-type fishing and scenery close to home. But silent sports enthusiasts visiting the Tur-

tle-Flambeau Flowage Scenic Waters Area can also tap into this wilderness experience.

Choose from five non-motorized trails to ride or hike in this serene nature area. Bring adequate water supplies if hiking a distance and a camera to capture pictures of any wildlife that you may see, as well as the gorgeous fall colors if you visit during autumn.

1. Big Island Trail - Trail uses: hiking, biking, snowshoeing, backcountry cross-country skiing (not groomed), hunting.

This trail begins at the bridge to Big Island. From County Highway FF go south on Popko Circle West approximately 3.6 miles and turn right on a woods road heading west towards Big Island. There is a grass parking area for 2-3 vehicles about 100 yards before the bridge. There are 8.8 miles of trail on the Island. The trail is mowed every 3-5 years.

2. Deadhorse Trail – Trail uses: hiking, biking, snowshoeing, back-country cross-country skiing (not groomed), hunting.

This is a 4.6-mile trail. Access is off Popko Circle West, approx-imately 2.0 miles south of County Highway FF. The Deadhorse Trail is located in a special management unit dedicated to inten-sive management for ruffed grouse with seven interpretive signs. The trail is mowed every 3-5 years.

3. Hidden Rivers Nature Trail –Trail uses: hiking, wheelchair friendly, snowshoeing.

This 2-mile trail has a gravel base. The trailhead is located

at the upper parking lot for Fisherman’s Landing. From County Highway FF go south on Popkos Circle West approximately 4.5 miles to Fisherman’s Landing Road. There are interpretive signs along the trail explaining the origin of the Flowage and some his-tory as well as some of the management for the property as a whole.

4. Little Turtle Trail – Trail uses: hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, hunting.

There are 5.2 miles of mowed trail in the Little Turtle Water-fowl Management Area. To access the trail take Popko Circle East south from Coun-ty Highway FF approx-imately 1.1 miles to Joe’s Shack Road. At the end of Joe’s Shack Road turn right to the

trailhead parking area on the north edge of the Little Turtle Flow-age. Bird watching is very popular here because it is the only open prairie in Iron County, so many grassland birds can be seen here and not in other parts of the county. Also, the wetlands provide unique bird watching opportunities, as the entire area is visible from a ridge that runs along the edge of the wetland.

5. Wilson Hills Trail – Trail uses: hiking, biking, snowshoeing, backcountry cross-country skiing (not groomed), hunting.

There are 5.5 miles of maintained trail in two segments be-tween Wilson Lake and the Bonies Mound area of the Tur-tle-Flambeau Flowage. To access the trails from County Highway FF go south on Popko Circle East approximately 3.6 miles to Wil-son Lake Road East. Take Wilson Lake Road East 1.1 miles to a woods road heading east. There are several access points along this woods road. The trail is mowed every 3-5 years.

Whether they thunder, gurgle or whisper, each of the wa-terfalls in Iron County is a perfect choice for a visit no matter what the calendar says, as each season imparts

its own special brand of beauty on the tumbling water. Spring snowmelt and rain swell a few of these waterfalls to near Niaga-ra Falls proportions. Summer brings hikers who become waders (small falls only!), followed by autumn when the waterfalls are framed by the glorious leaf colors, and finally, winter approach-es and breathes frosty beauty onto the landscape.

Some of the waterfalls are easily accessible; others are located off the beaten path. These are natural areas, so use caution and watch for slippery slopes and stones. Enjoy the falls from a safe distance. Don’t forget to bring a camera to share images of the waterfalls with friends and family! Check with the Mercer Area Chamber of Commerce for maps and books about the waterfalls in the area and beyond.

Lake of the Falls – 10 feet, Turtle River (Mercer/Turtle-Flambeau Flowage Area). North from Mercer on U.S. 51 for 1.4 miles. Turn west (left) on Hwy. FF and proceed 5.2 miles. Turn left at Iron County Park/Lake of the Falls sign. Picnic and rustic camping fa-cilities, boat landing with access to Turtle-Flambeau Flowage via Turtle River.

Shay’s Dam Falls – 15 feet, Turtle River (Mercer Area). Head east on County J in Mercer for 2.5 miles. Turn north (left) on Bea-ver Lodge Circle. Proceed 3.6 miles, passing Beaver Lake Road. Turn east (right) on Fisher Lake Road 1.2 miles to small side road on the left leading to Shay’s Dam. Watch for “Shay’s Dam” sign. Park with campsites, toilets, picnic area, and boat ramp.

Upson Falls – 18 feet, Potato River (Upson Area). Take Hwy. 77 west from Hurley into Upson. Turn north at Upson Town Park sign, then left at end of street. After crossing the river, turn left into Upson Town Park. Camping and picnic area available.

Superior Falls – 110 feet, Montreal River (Saxon Area). Go west on U.S. 2 about 12 from Hurley and take a right on Hwy 122 and follow to the Michigan State Line. Access to the falls is marked with small sign at the 2nd driveway on the left. The trail has a long incline with a rail and is slightly uneven, so watch your step.

Potato River Falls – 90 feet, Potato River (Gurney Area). Head south from U.S. 2 on Hwy. 169, 2.8 miles (through Town of Gur-ney). Turn west on Potato River Falls Road, continue for 1.5 miles. Town Park with rustic picnic campsites available.

Rouse Falls – 19 feet, Tyler Forks River (Upson area) Travel west from Upson about 2 1/2 miles on Hwy. 77. Take a right on Casey Sag Rd. one mile north of Hwy. 77 on Casey Sag Rd. near the rustic trail on the west. Then it is about a 3/4 mile hike.

Kimball Falls – 10 feet, West Branch Montreal River (Hurley Area). West of Hurley on U.S. 2 for 3 miles, turn south (left) on Park Road and continue .2 miles. Turn west (right) on Town Park Road. Cross the one lane bridge to enter the park just below the falls. Other scenic rapids and riffles are upstream. Picnic area and pavilion available.

Foster Falls – 25 feet, Potato River (north of Upson). North from Upson on Highway 122 for 5 miles. Turn west (left) on Sullivan Road and proceed 2 miles to the river and falls.

Spring Camp Falls – 20 feet, West branch, Montreal River (Hurley Area). Heading south from Hurley on Hwy. 51, travel 4 1/2 miles. Turn right (west) on County Hwy. C. About 1 1/2 miles west, the county road turns sharply north-don’t take that. Continue for-ward on the gravel road. In about a mile turn south, following East Branch Rd. about another 3 miles. When East Branch forks, contin-ue right about 1 mile. Follow rustic path signs.

Wren Falls – 30 feet, Tyler Forks River (Saxon area). About 5 1/2 miles south of US 2 on Hwy. 169. Take a left (east) turn on Vogues Rd. Follow the gravel road for 3 1/2 miles until a hairpin turn. Take the center road for about 1 mile where the road forks. From there hike up the hill to a primitive campsite above the north side of the falls.

F ind your next hunting adventure in Iron County, WI where Mercer serves as your base camp for food, lodging, hunting supplies and gear, and guides. The greater Mercer

area has over 377,000 acres of public forestland and numerous water bodies.

Your chances to bag a nice buck or doe are good in Iron County, but no matter the success ratio you’re sure to enjoy being outdoors in one of the prettiest areas of the Northwoods.

Hunters have easy access through forest roads, fire lanes and hunting trails that lead to white-tailed deer, bear, coyote, bobcat, turkey, grouse, waterfowl and small game such as squirrels. In addition to the vast amount of public lands, many more acres of private land enrolled in the state Managed Forest Law program are available to hunters.

Just south of Mercer is the Northwoods Wildlife and Wetlands Club’s shooting range open from April 1 to November 30 each

year. There are target ranges for rifle, pistol and archery, as well as clay trap shooting and an archery field course.

The Turtle Flameabu Scenic Water Area encompasses approxi-mately 35,000 acres of public land for hunting and trapping a wide variety of game animals. There are a few wildlife manage-ment units located in the Mercer Area. The Deadhorse Ruffed Grouse Management Demonstration Area and the Little Turtle Water Fowl Management Area consist of 24 miles of hunter walking trails. The trails are mowed and maintained to provide access for hunters of all ages. These areas are located about 2.0 miles South of County Road FF.

These are the good times for fishing the more than 200 lakes, streams and rivers in Iron County. All anglers – fish-ing buddies and families – are invited to explore these ex-

ceptional bodies of water and make fond memories for a lifetime. Each waterbody is unique and offers excellent opportunities to bring back the makings of a fish fry to the cabin or a trophy fish to be mounted.

You can find plenty of fresh bait and a variety of tackle, along with helpful advice from the folks who fish for a living. Hook up with a guide or explore on your own. The Mercer area is a natural for kayaking, canoeing and other water sports, too. Clear skies, fresh air and serenity are yours to enjoy. Abundant wildlife such as loons, eagles, and white-tailed deer are everyday occurrences.

Here’s a sampling of recommended area lakes to whet your appetite and wet your line!• San Domingo Lake – Located in the east central portion of the Mercer area, just off Hwy. 51 with a private landing. Just 39 acres but 20 feet deep with northern pike, largemouth bass and pan-fish.• French Lake – Located in the Springstead area, just north of Hwy. 182, 92 acres and 16 feet deep. Musky, walleye, bass and panfish.• Little Martha Lake – No public landing, so you will need to be a lodging guest on this private lake located in the north central area of Mercer. Musky, northern, largemouth bass and panfish are very abundant.• Pike Lake – Located in the central portion of Mercer with a private landing available. At 194 acres and some 80 feet deep, it

hosts musky, walleye, northern, bass and panfish.• Grand Portage Lake – Also known as Tank Lake, the 144-acre lake is located in central Mercer with a public boat landing. Roaming the lake are walleye, musky, northern, bass and pan-fish.• Weber Lake – Another small lake at 35 acres, it receives little fishing pressure so the action is great for walleye, bass, crappie and panfish. Located in the west central area of Mercer.• Spider Lake – Located in the north central portion of the Mer-cer area, just east of Hwy. H, access is by a public boat landing. Score big with musky, northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and panfish.• Fisher Lake – One of three lakes of the Turtle River Chain of Lakes, 42 acres and 25 feet deep. Musky, northern pike, walleye, largemouth bass and panfish. Located in the east central portion of Mercer area, east of Hwy. H.• Lake of the Falls –Located in the western portion of the Mercer area, just north of Hwy. FF. At 338 acres and 23 feet deep, it has plenty of room for northern pike, walleye, musky, smallmouth bass and panfish to roam.• Boot Lake – Located in the Springstead area north of Hwy. 182, with a public boat landing, 180 acres and 16 feet deep. Musky, northern pike, walleye, bass and panfish.• Turtle-Flambeau Flowage – Located in the southern portion of the Mercer area, north of Hwy. 182 and off Hwy. FF with access from three boat landings. A massive 19,000 acres and a maxi-mum depth of 50 feet, it offers anglers and wildlife watchers a near “Canadian” wilderness experience close to home. traverse through 377,000 acres of public land - a combination of State, County, and Town forests.

The terrain transforms from open wetlands to woodland meadows to aspen and pine plantations, all providing you with an exhilarating and varied Northwoods experience. There are more than 214 lakes in the Mercer area, including the 27,000-acre Turtle-Flambeau Scenic Waters Area which is listed in the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail guide. The Mercer area is known for abundant Bald Eagles, Ospreys, and Common Loons, and also hosts Black Terns, Merlins, Trumpeter Swans, and more than 150 other bird species.

Mercer’s clean and undeveloped forests, rivers, streams, and lakes provide quality habitat for an amazing variety of wildlife. In addition to the extraordinary number of bird species, a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians and mammals reside here. It is common to see deer, bear, bobcat and wolves, and with luck you may even spot a passing moose or cougar. Wildlife-watching and nature photography opportunities abound whether hiking, biking, or boating. A number of wildlife viewing accesses have been provided for auto touring around local lakes, the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage, and the Little Turtle Flowage. In Mercer the animals outnumber the people, and you’ll be sure to see plenty of wildlife when you visit! As a starting point, check out Mercer Bird Fest, our International Migratory Bird Day celebration, held at Carow Park the 2nd Saturday in June in conjunction with our bike festival, Lupine Junefest.

1 Lake Superior. The largest freshwater lake in the world is only a 40 minute drive from Mercer. Saxon Harbor and Little Girls Point Park are two of our

favorite access points, allowing you to walk the pristine natural shoreline for miles.

2 Waterfalls. Dozens of picturesque waterfalls cascade down the higher elevations of northern Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as they empty

into the shores of Lake Superior.

3 Three State Parks, three National Forests, and one National Lakeshore are all located within 100 miles of Mercer.

4 Wisconsin is the nation’s leading cranberry producer, so it should be no surprise that you can tour several cranberry marshes within a short drive of the Loon

Mercer has a colorful history

Fur trade, mineral exploration, logging, railroads, and resorts each, in succession, played a large part in shaping Mercer to what it is today – a beautiful vacation area that attracts visitors throughout the four

seasons.In 1894 the first train arrived in Mercer signaling the beginning of the early

settlers, roads, mills, stores, and other businesses. It was also the year that the first school was built here.

Mercer was created as a district of the town of Vaughn in 1908 and estab-lished as a town on Feb. 26, 1909. The first town meeting was held in April of 1909.

With much of the timber logged by the turn of the century, the local econ-omy turned to tourism. The first resorts were little more than logging camps, located near rail towns or along major water routes. Primitive as they were, the hunting and fishing camps drew wealthy sportsmen who arrived by rail.

By the 1920s, roads began to make their way into northern Wisconsin and Mercer’s resorts began to blossom as southern Wisconsin and Chicago fami-lies sought the cooling breezes of pristine lakes and quiet lifestyle offered here during the hot summers. Family-owned resorts with cottages sprang up in re-sponse.

Notable visitorsWith its away-from-the-spotlight reputation, Mercer also became a desti-nation in the early 1930s for some of Chicago’s more notorious individuals, namely the Capone brothers. Just up the street, so to speak, Hurley’s Silver Street district was popular among “vacationing” gangsters.

Al Capone fished the Turtle-Flambeau Flowage area many times, especially in the years after he was released from prison. John Dillinger also frequented the area.

Ralph Capone (brother of Al Capone) enjoyed northern Wisconsin so much that he made it his home. He settled in Mercer and operated The Rex Bar until the 1970s when he passed away. Generous to the community, he was well respected and liked.

Charlie Comiskey, founder of the White Sox baseball team, used Jerome’s Hunting and Fishing Club on Trude Lake as a place for rest and relaxation for himself and his team.

Throughout the 1940s and ‘50s, the resort era was in full bloom. Visitors could see beautiful wooden boats on the waters here, and resorts added housekeeping cabins to keep them coming back.

Today you can still find a few of these historic lodges, as well as many more modern accommodations with amenities such as Jacuzzi and Internet service.

Visit the Depot MuseumTake a walk back in time with a visit to the Mercer Depot Museum located just east of Main Street. The Mercer Depot Museum is the only remaining wooden rail depot in Iron County. It represents a period when travel by rail replaced travel via the Flambeau Trail used by Native Americans and fur trappers.

The Depot has been restored to its turn of the century charm and visitors continue to be fascinated by the many reminders of the past. The Soo Line caboose has also been lovingly restored to replicate the days of yesteryear fea-turing one of the beds that is located in the upstairs portion and the original potbelly stove that was used to keep the cold at bay.

The Mercer Historical Society also restored the original jailhouse, the one room schoolhouse and the barbershop.
