1. A FAMILY DAY TO EXPLORE, LEARN, AND ENJOY!

On Saturday, May 16, 2015 we hosted the Family Science, Health, and Literacy Day

on the main campus. Hundreds from the tri-county area attended the day which

was filled with lots of excitement and discoveries. I witnessed many future scientists in

the making today!

"It was a tremendous success. We didn't have any books left

and the American Heart Association handed out all the

materials as well. Many blood pressures where taken and

many heard about how to prevent a heart attack and

stroke," said Board of Trustees President, Elia Gonzalez-

Castro.

Sponsors made this event possible; special thanks to the

Literacy Campaign for Monterey County, Driscoll’s, and

Taylor Farms. The Veteran's Club provided a delicious free

lunch to over 500 participants.

Hartnell Faculty Marisol White said, “My two daughters, ages

6 and 3 and my husband participated at this event. We

attended from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and we could not get

enough! My oldest has such a deep interest in Geology and

was jumping in the hall as she reached the

classroom where many students were so eager to

teach her the many different fossils, rocks and beach

sand. My three-year old could not stop clapping

and raising her hand to answer questions during the

Physics and Chemistry demonstrations.

1.12.2015 Every single volunteer and presenter that we interacted with

greeted us with an abundance wealth of knowledge in their

fields as well as a wonderful smile. I walked around so proudly knowing that our school

offers prestigious programs and clubs in addition to the outreach to our community.”

The large crowds were entertained by live student performances from Tatiana's War

Machine and Hartnell College Baile Folklorico. STEM disciplines were represented with

fun and exciting hands-on activities and jaw dropping shows: Astronomy, Biology,

Computer Science, Chemistry, Geology, Engineering, Physics- Including mini sessions

of NASA SEMAA and Coder Dojo. We also had nutrition information and free health

screenings. Thanks to the planning team: Andy Kreyche, Joni Black, Tito Polo, Elia

Gonzalez-Castro and headed by MESA Director, Bronwyn Moreno. The faculty and

nearly 50 student volunteers made this possible! Board of Governors Vice President,

Erica Padilla-Chavez attended and was delighted to experience all the fun.

“I believe Bronwyn’s efforts, along with her team, brought a fresh, vibrant face to this

event,” expressed Dean of Academic Affairs, Shannon Bliss. “I am overwhelmed with

how successful the event was on Saturday- the attendance from the community, the

enthusiasm of our students, and the level of participation by staff and faculty.”

2. PATHWAYS FOR HEALTH CONVENING

The Alisal Health Professions Workforce Pathways

Partnership Convening was on May 19, 2015 at Hartnell

College. This group prepares students to enter into

health careers, supply regional health workforce

needs, and achieve health equity and economic

prosperity in the Salinas Valley.

The goals of the

convening are: to

increase pathway partner understanding of the

history and lessons learned of AHPWPP, to develop

shared core values, to increase understanding of

healing informed supports at all levels of the

pathway, and to increase understanding of the

California Endowment’s Health Career Pathway

Funding Priorities.

The four-hour session was facilitated by Beth Alshuler.

The gathering included introduction of all

attendees, an icebreaker, presentations by students,

Nursing & Allied Health, special programs to

empower students, and more.

Towards the end, a breakout session invited new

ideas and creativity. First year RCP student, Eddie

Ruano was proud to be a guest speaker.

At last week’s Board Development meeting, the

Trustees received three presentations from various

constituent groups. The TRiO program gave a

presentation on its successful ways towards assisting

students achieve their academic goals. Dr. Nancy

Reyes, Norma

Nichols, and Manuel

Bersamin spoke with

such passion for their students. They said that the

best ingredient they offer students is the love and

care they themselves put into every single one of

them. A few students were introduced and

provided testimony on how the program and its

counselors has made a huge difference in them.

Olivia Davalos presented on the Deputy-Sector

Navigator Program which she represents in our area.

This program provides students with instruction in

digital media, helps them build pathways towards

jobs in that industry, exposes them to hundreds of

courses and internships. Some of our students have

gone on to do great work in video and graphic

design thanks to the initial involvement and

participation they had with Olivia and the program.

4. BECOMING A SMOKE-FREE/TOBACCO-FREE CAMPUS

The Hartnell Community College District (HCCD)

Governing Board approved Board Policy (BP) 3570 –

Tobacco-free and Smoke-free Campus to go into

effect July 1, 2015.

BP 3570 was approved and moved forward by the

District’s participatory governance groups. The

Board of Trustees approved the policy unanimously

at its second reading on Tuesday, May 5, 2015.

The HCCD is committed to providing a healthy

learning environment and to promoting healthful

living for its students, employees, and guests. To that

end, upon my recommendation, the HCCD Board of

Trustees adopted a board policy implementing a smoke-free and tobacco-free

campus.

6. STUDENTS FROM SOUTH COUNTY GET INVOLVED

.

The board policy states that it is the policy of the Hartnell

Community College District to provide a safe learning and

working environment for both students and employees. It is recognized that smoke

from cigarettes, pipes, and/or cigars, vapor from e-cigarettes, and smokeless

tobacco products are hazardous to health; therefore, it is the policy of the District to

prohibit smoking and the use of tobacco on all District property and all locations

where District services are provided.

The HCCD will promote smoking and tobacco cessation treatment options, post signs

stating its prohibition of smoking and tobacco use policy on campus, and keep

employees and students informed of the policy. ,

The EOPS/CARE/CalWORKs program had its 16th

Annual Student Recognition Ceremony on

Wednesday, May 20, 2015 at Steinbeck Hall. More

than 150 students were celebrated for their

academic achievements, graduation, and

transferring to four-year universities.

Director of Categorical Programs, Paul Casey

served as emcee for the event; he welcomed

alumna Jasmine Morales and alumnus Ulises

Palmeno to speak of their experience at Hartnell

and their current roles in the community. Jasmine

graduated from CSUMB and works in the foster

care system. Ulises is a successful Adjunct English

instructor.

In addition, two employees were recognized:

Auto/Diesel Technology Instructor, Valentin

Rodriguez, and Enrollment Specialist, Benjamin Grainger.

Trustees Candi DePauw and Demetrio Pruneda attended the ceremony along with

me and other Hartnell employees.

Human Biology instructor Dominic Gregorio

involved his students in a presentation of posters

at the Salinas County Fair held last week in King

City.

The picture shows Dan Dominguez (left) and Jose

Arriola (right) staffing the table last Friday. Other

students also displayed their work on Sunday.

7. MUSIC IS IN THE AIR

S

The Hartnell College Music Department is "on the road again" sharing choral music

with students in South County. Thanks to a generous grant from the S.T.A.R.

Foundation, our singers gave two performances at the King City Arts Magnet School.

The King City students were excited to come up on stage to pose for photos with the

Hartnell College students. "It was a fantastic experience for all and we are looking

forward to a return visit in the fall," shared Sandy Rudo, Hartnell College Choral Music

Instructor.

The Student-Faculty-Staff (S-F-S) Recognition Award is a new program created by the

Hartnell College Foundation in collaboration with the Advancement Council.

This program is to recognize one student, two faculty (one full time and one adjunct),

and two staff (CSEA/Confidential and L-39) who embody the "I am Hartnell" motto for

2015. The five (5) awardees will receive:

· Hartnell Heart memento

· Engraved brick for recognition walkway (by Library)

· $100 gift card

9. OUR PLANETARIUM EDUCATOR IS RECOGNIZED

10. LEON AND PACHECO STATE CHAMPIONS FOR HARTNELL

The nomination link was sent to all students and employees. The

deadline for submission is August 31, 2015 and the awards will be

revealed in late November 2015.

Let’s all recognize those who make a difference at Hartnell. If you have any

questions, please contact Loyanne Flinn at 755-6810 or [email protected].

In the March Journal of the International Planetarium

Society (IPS) it was announced that Hartnell's

Planetarium Educator Andy Kreyche was the first place

winner in this year's "Pages of Stars" competition. The IPS

is the global association of planetarium professionals

with a goal of sharing ideas among its members. The

competition solicited written and recorded submissions

of original stories, scientific commentary, or adaptions of

a cultural story. Winners were selected by

the Astronomical Observatory Serafino Zani in Italy and

the International Planetarium Society’s Mobile

Planetarium Committee

Andy submitted a story he

adapted from several

versions of a Japanese folk

tale called "The Rabbit in the Moon." Since writing the story

and recording it for the contest, he has integrated it into

his presentations, mainly for first grade groups visiting the

planetarium. Instead of simply telling the story, Andy invites

young audience members to don costumes and play

three animal characters (rabbit, monkey and fox) and

enlists the audience to participate as well. Both the script

and audio version of the story are available so other

planetarium presenters can make use of it in their facilities.

More about the contest will be published in the June issue

of the IPS Journal.

Sophomore Diego Leon has envisioned for almost a year how he would want his

second chance at the CCCAA Track & Field Championship to go after watching last

page 7

1.12.2015 year's version where he is was stricken with a stomach virus that

left him unable to compete in the events

for which he qualified. Leon decided he would qualify in three

events and make an attempt to win all three. With an

additional year's worth of training under his belt and a state

cross country championship pointing him in the right direction,

the former Anzar High School standout completed the rare

"triple crown" this past weekend at the College of San Mateo,

host of the 2015 CCCAA Track & Field Championship. Leon

started his quest with an easy win Friday in the 10,000 meter run

(31:20.63) that saw him reel in an early leader and win by 3

seconds over Southern California champion Ethan Walker of

College of the Canyons. On Saturday, he faced the top two

ranked 1,500 meter community college runners in the state

and dispelled them easily with a runaway win 3:53.58 after taking the lead after one

lap. Leon became just the second athlete in championship history to win the three

events concluding with the 5,000 meters by besting the

second best 5,000 meter runner in the nation Conner

Fisher of Cuesta College. Again, Leon led most of the

race and ran away with the title over the final 400

meters in 14:40.53 to win by 4 seconds. Only Kris

Bowditch of Riverside Community College in 1995 had

previously won the 1,500, 5,000, and 10,000 meter titles

in the same championship. For his efforts, Leon was

named the 2015 CCCAA Male Track Athlete of the

Meet. He finishes the season as the top ranked

community college 5,000 meter runner in the nation,

the Hartnell College school record holder at 5,000

meters, and the winner of the fall cross country title and

three track titles.

Freshman Chase Pacheco continued his rise to

stardom in the decathlon as he put together an even

better ten event competition than he did to win the Northern California title. His

winning point score of 6,709 was 218 points ahead of

Southern California champion Cade Lindsay of Mt. San

Antonio College. Pacheco had decathlon season bests in

the long jump (23'2.75"), shot put (33'10.75"), high jump

(6'4"), 400 meters (49.41), pole vault (12'7.50"), and javelin

(142'8"). Pacheco goes to second best in Hartnell College

history and trails only fellow state champion Erick Knight's

6,909 set in winning the 2000 state decathlon title. Pacheco

will compete in one more decathlon this year, the USA

Track & Field Championship decathlon in Eugene, Oregon

on June 24.

11. UPCOMING EVENTS

Freshman Malena Grover and sophomore Rachel Shimabukuro

both picked up All-American honors for their fourth place

finishes. Grover completed the 5,000 meter run in 17:55.96 to place fourth and finish as

the second highest Northern California finisher. Shimabukuro used a last lap charge to

pick up her fourth place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (11:35.98). It was the

first trip to the state championship for both. Grover finishes the season as the Hartnell

College school record holder in the 5,000 meter run.

Shimabukuro leaves as the second best 3,000 meter

steeplechaser in school history and Northern California

runner-up. Also competing in the 3,000 meter

steeplechase was freshman Nancy Rodriguez who

placed tenth (12:06.44) and will be the top returning

runner in the event in Northern California next year.

Sophomore Brandi Hobson wrapped up her Hartnell

career with an eighth place finish in the 10,000 meter run

(38:43.31) and ninth place in the 5,000 meters (18:56.16).

Frosh Tori Teraji placed eighth in the heptathlon with a

score of 3537 points. Frosh Taylor Blaha placed sixth in the

long jump with a season best 17'3.25". Frankie Gutierrez

(javelin), Marcus Washington (long jump), and Dustin

Samms (hammer) all placed twelfth in their events. For full CCCAA Championship

As a team, the Hartnell men placed sixth overall with 40 points thanks to four first

place finishes by Diego Leon and Chase Pacheco. The women placed 22nd overall

with 16 points.
