YOUTH SPORTS TEAMS THRIVE ON THE ROAD… Before you make it to middle school, most of your athletic competitions are spent within the community of Springville on a public playground. To find some “outside” competition you have to hit the road, and that can be an intimidating venture for a child not accustomed to that environment. Please take the opportunity to thank the likes of Beau Zaruba, Nancy Hagensick & Sandy Hoogland, Rich Blakely, Ralph Oxley & Larry Riley, Robin & Jeff Menster and Russ Wagaman. All have been devoting their time to coaching younger basketball teams who travel to area communities and represent our school and our town, and they are doing it with great success.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL SEASON IS HERE; Monday’s and Thursday’s folks—each week on these days the Springville middle school boys team has ball games—4pm is their start time and they will be home next week each day—both Monday, Jan. 31 and Thursday, Feb. 3. Plenty of action on the court, we hope to see you there. What is your favorite sport to follow and the team you support? Football, 49ers(I know but I have been a fan of them since 1986, the year I came to the US and learned to watch football). If you could meet someone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why? The Zealot Saul later named Paul of the New Testament, because he is the most transformed person that I know. If you were told you could only pack 3 items for a mysterious weekend away—what 3 items would you choose? Coffee ice-cream, coffee and half & half. What is your favorite meal? This week we reprint a feature that was printed on Oct. 13, where we profiled Sydney Vaughn (daughter of this weeks Legend Deb Vaughn). Where were you born? St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids How many brothers/sisters - and are you the oldest/youngest? 2 brothers and 2 sisters. I am the youngest. Parents names- Jeff and Deb Vaughn Sports you participate in- Cheerleading, marching band, volleyball, and track Favorite sport- Track Favorite movie- Remember the Titans or Tombstone

Favorite food- Steak, potatoes, and sweet corn Who do you text the most? Ryan If you could meet one famous person, who would you choose? Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow (They have to come in a pair!) What do you like to do in your free time? Free time? People actually have that? What is the scariest thing that ever happened to you? When I was five, my brother, Paul, buried me in the snow and left me there for an hour! What is your most memorable athletic moment so far? Running on the Sprint Medley Relay team when we broke the 36 year old record. What are your plans after high school? Colleges? Majors? Will you play a sport? I plan to attend a four year college to major in Chemistry and have a future career in forensic science. I may or my not run track. What do you do to get pumped up for a game? The Springville boys and girls basketball teams took a couple on the chin this past week. Last Friday at North Linn the girls fell 39-25 and the boys really struggled in a 47-10 loss. In girls action the Lady O’s were led by senior Katie Wyman who threw in 8 points including two from the 3-point arch. The Lynx press forced 24 Oriole turnovers and coupled with 33% shooting, the girls dug a hole they couldn’t get out of. First year head coach, Nate Sanderson said, "This was a bit of a frustrating game for us tonight. In the first half we got off to a slow start, and fell behind early. We didn't do a great job of defending in transition, and that allowed North Linn to get some easy baskets. We managed to hang around until halftime, but North Linn made their first five shots of the second half and we quickly found ourselves down 17. To our kids credit, we battled back to within 8 going into the fourth quarter, but offensively we stalled out and did not score for the remainder of the game." In boys action on Friday, the Oriole offense took a night off as the boys shot a frigid 18% from the field. Senior Joel Lam finished with 4 points and plenty of rest as foul trouble forced him out of the action and made him a spectator. Tuesday, the Springville Orioles hoped to use a home court advantage in an effort to knock off the visiting Maquoketa Valley Wildcats. The women stayed close through three quarters after overcoming a slow start in the first. “Tonight I was really pleased with our effort against a very good Maquoketa Valley team (ranked #9 in 2A). Once again, we fell behind early in the first quarter, down 13-2 just five minutes

into the game. However, over the next 20 minutes we out-scored MV 27-21 and going into the fourth quarter found ourselves down just five points. Unfortunately, MV cranked up their half court man-to-man pressure and we just didn't respond well. Once

we were forced to foul in the final minutes, they were able to put the game out of reach. However, considering they beat us by 30 the first time we played them, we were very pleased with the way our kids competed and worked hard to execute the game plan. We are starting to believe that when we play with our best effort, we can be a very good basketball team. The challenge for us closing out the regular season is figuring out how to sustain that effort for an entire basketball game. Hannah Loehr had one of her most active nights, finishing with 9 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Katie Wyman also had 8 points and 6 rebounds", said Coach Sanderson. The ladies fell to Maquoketa Valley, 45-29 and with the loss fall to 6-11 overall and 5-8 in conference play. In boys action 28 turnovers, 26% from the field and 26 total scored points tell the tale of another tough loss for these young men. Springville fell to the Wildcats 61-26 in yet another hard fought game on the Oriole side and to add insult to injury, senior Brennan Starry re-injured his shoulder and

was lost for perhaps the rest of the season. Coach Nick Merritt said after the game, “Although we are struggling right now, I’m very encouraged by the effort we are putting on the floor every night. We’ve had some flashes of brilliance here and there which is a good sign of how good we are capable of being. Once we get some shots to start falling and start cutting down on turnovers, we have a good shot of knocking some teams off. Losing Brennan will definitely hurt us, so we will have to expect some of our younger guys to step up and play very large roles the remainder of the season.” Speaking of stepping up—sophomore Jake Hulett added another double/double to his stat column last night with 10 points and 12 boards. Senior Patrick Ray had 11 boards as well as 4 steals and 4 assists. Saturday will be another home event as Lone

Thank you Mr.Koch & Mr. Davis! What is one of the craziest things you did while in high school? Sorry...I've got nothin..unless you count doing homework for the hotshot boys on the basketball & football teams...I was boring! Did you have a nickname? Shrimp/Shorty College attended? Major/degree earned; Kirkwood/Criminal Justice Most influential teacher in high school and the subject they taught; I had some great teachers at SHS, but if I have to choose, I'd say Walter Searcy & Jon Davis-Middle School History, and High School history, government and economics. (with a shout out to Fred Thatcher, 6th grade science) What made these teachers so memorable? Both Mr. Searcy & Mr. Davis made learning a hands on adventure, with mock courts, panning for gold in the creek, creating your own civilization, and other sensory learning lesson plans, and both were masters at telling a story that had a lot of "lesson" in it...but you were so engrossed in the tale that you didn't realize you were learning! How many students were in your senior class? Around 73, we were a big class. If you were to write an autobiography - what would the title be? “Just a Small Town Girl” If you could have one superpower, what would it be? Omnipotence! Who was your heart-throb in high school? Davey Jones & Bobby Sherman, I suppose. (yep, I am that old) Did your senior prom have a theme - if so what was it? I think it was "Knights in White Satin" (but it should have been guys in colored leisure suits ;) If you were to audition for American Idol, what song would you sing? No one wants to hear me sing, trust me. A quick word of wisdom for Springville students; Embrace your good fortune at being in a small school...you have the chance to do a little of everything, so DO IT... and remember, everything you do affects someone else, even if you don't see it, so do good things.
