Advances in

20th Century Science- A Small Time Capsule -

1)Blood Bank (A medical advancement)

This is an image of a doctor drawing blood from someone who chose to donate his blood to the blood bank for the World War II Medical Effort created by Charles Richard Drew, the father of the blood bank, known as “Blood for Britain”. The blood collected from the man who donated his blood will be processed and shipped overseas to help treat the wounds of a soldier.

2) The Transistor (A technological advancement)

The image on the left is of John Bardeen, William Shockley, and Walter

Bratian working on the first transistor which is shown on the right. The transistor made it possible for people to have smaller, more cheaply made electronics.

3) Aviation

This is a photograph of Orville Wright, flying the first airplane. He and his brother, Wilbur Wright, had created the airplane out of their curiosity of flying. The machine, which had started as a mere experiment for the Wright brothers, had sparked their deeper interest in aviation. Over time, the airplane became much more complex, and one of the most sought after and luxurious forms of transportation in the 20th century.

So… Why did I think That these 20th century advancements in science were important?

The reason why I have made the blood bank number one among the 20th century advancements in science is that the blood people donate to and store in the blood bank is used for a great number of different medical procedures that save lives today. The transistor was the first invention to allow people to have smaller and more cheaply made goods, and ultimately lead to the widely used cellular phone of the 21st century people use as their main form of communication. Unlike the blood bank, the transistor does not save lives, making it only number two in my list of 20th century advancements in science. Scientific advancement number three in my list of 20th century advancements would be aviation. The Wright brothers’ first successful has lead to the international flights we are able to take today to visit and connect with other cultures, allows people to visit their faraway relatives, and even lead to outer space travel.
