  • TYPOLOGYOF SLUMS

A slum is characterised and defined by its origin, what it is situated next to and what it comprises of. Represented here are different slum typologies observed at research locations and in large urban Indian cities in general.

Changes in the city caused by urban development affect several slums that fall under a very real threat of demoli-tion or relocation. Most of these slums are in the path of urban development projects such as construction of flyovers, widening of roads, new real estate and city beautification projects.Examples: Mathikere Flyover Slum_Bangalore

    IN THE PATH OF DEVELOPMENT

These are many times the only spaces within a city that have not been affected by real estate development. Hence they are ideal places for new settlements to spring up. Settlements near railway tracks are notorious for open defecation.Example: Vivekananda Colony_Okhlipuram_Bangalore

These slums are clusters that the city has developed around and enveloped from all sides. These settlements are coveted spaces for new development because of their real estate value. Most residents of these slums may be second or third generation settlers and rarely will you find new settlers. Example: Govandi _ Mumbai

A phenomenon often noticed in such slums is vertical housing, which may be multi-storey. Each floor may have 10 or more households living together and sharing basic amenities like water and toilets.Example: Zamrudhpur_Delhi

These slums start as housing for construction workers working in residential centers. These settlements then evolve into more permanent slums and once construc-tion is over, the workers might shift to another location but the settlement is there to stay. The residential colony creates jobs like maids, cooks, drivers, hired help and small businesses like grocery, plumbing, maintenance for the slum dwellers.Example: Happy Colony_Karvenagar_Pune

These are settlements that are in locations in the city which, because of their unique topographies, have been inaccessible to public infrastructure development and hence remain undeveloped land. These may include river banks or small hills within the city.Example: Parvati_Pune, Yamuna Banks_Pune

Slums come up in close proximity to new industrial suburbs that have emerged outside the city limits. These slums are characterised by a large immigrant population catering primarily to these industries.Example: Ashwatpura_Peenya_Bangalore

    SUBURBAN INDUSTRIAL AREAS

    6

Much of the recent urban development in almost all cities of India has happened in newer parts of the city, leaving the older parts of city in want of much needed infrastructural overhaul. Slums in these parts of the city are highly congested, have little or no scope of infrastructure development and often suffer government apathy.
