A MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIEL STEIN…

Many people are familiar with the “injunction” to consume alcohol on Purim. Many may not know the origin of the custom. In the Talmud, in tractate Megillah, we find the original source for the “commandment:

“Rabbah and R. Zera joined together in a Purim feast. They became mellow, and Rabbah arose and cut R. Zera’s throat. On the next day he prayed on his behalf and revived him. Next year he said, Will your honour come and we will have The Purim feast together? He replied: A miracle does not take place on every occasion.”

We live in a world where the boundaries between reasonable enjoyment and danger are easily blurred. Something that is pleasurable--and even reasonable to enjoy in moderation--can quickly become a dangerous vice. The Rabbis were wise to realize that the key to living a balanced life was moderation; we are not commanded to avoid, but rather to realize that our actions and behaviors can have consequences that extend far beyond our original expectations.

As we prepare to celebrate Purim this year, I hope we enjoy the holiday in the festive spirit it deserves. I hope that we also acknowledge the call of the rabbis--to enjoy, have fun, but to be responsible!

Raba said: It is the duty of a man to mellow himself [with wine] on Purim until he cannot tell the difference between” cursed be Haman’ and ‘blessed be Mordecai’.

From this frequently quoted verse, it might seem as though the Talmud is endorsing the practice of excessive consumption. But there is more to the story. Immediately after it recounts this law, the Talmud relates the following anecdote:

Last month, I reported that Trish Mann was leaving her position as bookkeeper of Bnai Abraham Synagogue.

I am happy to report that the position has been filled by Mr. Ed Hudak Jr. Ed is a graduate of Moravian College and is a C.P.A. His work history includes 24 years in the accounting department of Bethlehem Steel, as well as being employed as the CFO of Square One Markets of Bethlehem. Ed has assumed the position at Bnai and is acquainting himself with our office and procedures.

We want to welcome him and look forward to working with him. He will be working our normal office hours, Tue. – Thurs. 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

We are looking forward to having a celebration marking the building anniversary of Bnai Abraham Synagogue. If you are interested in participating in the planning and programming of this event, please contact the office.

Our celebration will begin with a havdallah service and megillah reading at 7:00 PM. As you may know, one of the customs of Purim is the (moderate) enjoyment of spiritus fermenti. With focus on moderation, Dan Edelman will be presenting on his passion for home brewing, as well as providing a sampling of a variety of beers from around the world. For kids, we will be setting up a Nintendo Wii on a giant screen to play Mario Cart. Refreshments will be available throughout the evening.

WOMEN'S DIVISION LUNCH & LEARN: FINDING THE HERO IN YOU WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 2014 – TIME 12:00 to 1:30 P.M.

Neil Dicker, a retired Lehigh Valley dentist and active member of the Jewish community, will talk about his experience with cancer and the stem cell transplant that saved his life. Diagnosed with a rare form of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2005, Neil underwent several years of conventional treatment before receiving a matched unrelated donor transplant in 2009. Since recovering, he has become a passionate speaker on behalf of the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation, encouraging everyone to become a part of the international genetic registry.

Neil, father of four and grandfather of two, is also an avid amateur cyclist. He and his wife, Linda, have been members of Temple Beth El in Allentown for 25 years.

Program is $12, including lunch. Men and women are welcome.

The Alan Shawn Feinstein Foundation will again distribute $1 million among non-profit agencies fighting hunger. Each participating agency will get a share of the $1 million equal to its proportion of the total amount raised by all participants. Bnai Abraham is excited to partner with Coursera and Tel Aviv University to offer a special distance learning opportunity; we will audit TAU's 6-week seminar, "The Emergence of the Modern East”, by watching the lectures together, projected on a large screen. After the lectures, a discussion session will be led by Rabbi Stein. A full description of the course, along with its faculty, is listed below:

This course will discuss the emergence of the modern Middle East from the fall of the Ottoman Empire, at the end of the First World War to the present. It will discuss the Ottoman legacy in the region and the Western imperial impact on the creation of the Arab state system. The course will discuss the rise and retreat of Arab nationalism, the problems of internal cohesion of the Arab states, issues of religion and state, and the evolution of Islamist politics. It will also focus on the evolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict and its impact on the region and will conclude with an in depth analysis of the “Arab Spring” by placing these contemporary revolutionary events in their historical context.

Prof. Susser, PhD (Tel Aviv University, 1986), is a Senior Research Fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies and former Director of the Center (1989-1995, 2001-2007). Prof. Susser teaches in the Department of Middle Eastern and African History at Tel Aviv University, and in 2006 he received the Faculty of Humanities outstanding teacher's award.

Prof. Susser spent the 2009-10 academic year on Sabbatical at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University as the Senior Fellow on the Myra and Robert Kraft Chair in Arab Politics. In August 2009, he spoke at a Crown Center Symposium on ”What's Up in the Middle East?,” where he discussed the prospects of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. In October he participated in another Crown Center symposium on Middle East Politics: Present and Future where he addressed "Regional Dimensions: The Middle East in Context." In February 2010, Prof. Susser lectured on "Fault Lines—Israel, Jordan, Palestine" at an international conference on Promoting State-Building, Managing Fault Lines, held in Jerusalem jointly by the South African-based Brenthurst Foundation and the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung. He also participated in the follow up conference held at Tswalu in South Africa in May. In February he delivered a lecture on "Israel, Iran, and the Arabs: The Middle East of the 21st Century," in the Shaol Pozez Memorial Lectureship, under the auspices of the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Prof. Susser published a monograph on ”The Rise of Hamas and the Crisis of Secularism in the Arab World”, in the Essay Series of the Crown Center for Middle East Studies and reviews in scholarly journals on George Gilder's ”The Israel Test”, Rich Cohen's ”Israel is Real”, and on Curtis Ryan's ”Inter-Arab Alliances: Regime Security and Jordanian Foreign Policy.”

Breaking the Cycle of History: Where have all the flowers gone?

Made popular in the time of protest against the Vietnam war, the song is really about the cycle of history and how impossible it is to break. The narrator of the song asks the question "When will we ever learn? ” yet, is seeing the cycle enough to end it? Is there a cycle of history? Most historians might say that there is, which would account for such apocryphal sayings as, "Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.”

Our successful Torah Study group will continue to meet Thursday mornings, 10:15 to 11:15. No prior experience is necessary. We are charging a low materials fee of $10 per semester to defray the cost of copying and coffee.

CAMPAIGN FOR NEW MEMBERS - HELP WANTED!

We are asking every member of our congregation to help us locate prospective new members. They may be your neighbors, friends, vet, or whoever. Please relay the name and any pertinent information to the Membership Chair, Marna Simon, or to Elaine Morrow. You may also call and give the information to the synagogue office staff.

AL’S CLEANERS - FUNDRAISER FOR BAS!

Bnai Abraham has been signed up at Al’s Cleaners, 1132 Northampton Street, to enable the synagogue to collect 10% of all sales of dry cleaning and laundry services that our congregants spend there. It’s easy. Just mention that you are a member of Bnai Abraham Synagogue, and they will credit the synagogue and send the proceeds periodically. Al’s is only about seven blocks from the synagogue, has very convenient hours, and does excellent work.

Please notify the Bnai Abraham Synagogue office of any address changes to enable us to avoid charges for returned and undeliverable mail and to insure that you receive all mail being sent to you from the synagogue.

Jewish Family Services of the Lehigh Valley

Jewish Family Service is committed to alleviating hunger in our community. Please join us in our efforts to accomplish this.

Thank you to everyone who has so generously contributed to our food pantry with non-perishable items or financial support. We are supported in the 18104 zip code by Second Harvest, as well as by the contributions of food drives and individuals. We are looking to expand into the entire Lehigh Valley to our Jewish community, and we ask for your support.

If you have non-perishable items to donate, please either drop them at JFS or call and we will pick them up. Financial donations can be sent directly to JFS.

In our outreach, we need everyone to spread the word. If you know someone, either affiliated or not, who could benefit from any JFS service, tell them about us and have them call. JFS maintains confidentiality and professionalism. We will deliver emergency food packages or supplemental food boxes anywhere in the Lehigh Valley. In addition to providing food, our Benefits Checkup Program (BCU) is designed to assist low-income persons of retirement age and younger adults with disabilities find and apply for federal, state and local benefits. JFS seeks to help individuals and families live healthier, more stable lives by providing professional, counseling, education and community programs.
