SELECTIONFORRADIALLOADCALCULATINGBEARINGLIFE Selectionforradialloadingisusuallybasedontheradialloadratingdenotedby“Cr”.TheradialloadratingslistedinthiscataloguearebasedonISOstandards.Thesystemestablishesacommonbasisforcalculatingloadratingsforallanti-frictionbearings.Itisbasedonthestatisticallifeexpectancyforrollingcontactfatigue,andprovidesareasonableestimateofservicelifeunderconditionsofadequatelubrication,freedomfromcontaminationandexcessivemisalignment.Inpractice,theservicelifeofthebearingmaybedeterminedbyfactorsotherthantherollingcontactfatigue.Generally,theterm‘life’usedintheBearingSelectionsectionofthiscataloguereferstothestatisticallifeofthebearingagainstrollingcontactfatigueascalculatedusingISOstandards.

Selectionforradialloadisdeterminedindependentlyfromtheaxialload.Determinetheradialload,speedandminimumliferequired.Generallytheshaftsizehasbeenpredetermined.Selectionofthebearingcanbemadeusingthefollowingformula:

SEALINGSOLUTIONSEfficientperformanceandlonglifeoftherollerbearingdependtoalargeextentupontheexclusionofforeignmatterfromtheinternalbearingsurfaces.Grease,oroil,servesthedualpurposeoflubricatingthesesurfacesandprotectingthemfromcorrosion.Thusthesealmustpreventdust,gritandmoisturefromenteringthebearingandatthesametimepreventgreaseoroilfromescaping.

ALIGNMENTFEATURECoopersuppliesvariousmountingoptionsandforall,exceptthehangermountings,thebearingishousedinacartridgesupportedbythemountingunit.Cartridgeshaveasphericaloutersurfacethatfitsintoaconformingsurfaceinthemountingunit(suchaspedestalorflange)inthemannerofaballandsocketjoint.

Anyshaftmisalignmentthatmayexisttendstomovethecartridge,sealandbearingtogether,maintainingthesealonanaxisparalleltotheshaft.Standardpedestalsandflangesaredesignedtoallowupto2½°misalignmentbetweentheshaftandhousing,underconstantorslowlychangingalignmentconditions,withoutcompromisingsealing.

Comparethiswiththesituationthatoccurswithadoublerowsphericalbearinginastandardpedestal.Ifthepedestalisnotaccuratelyalignedwiththeshaft,contactbetweenthesealandtheshafttendstobelostatoneside,andthesealpressesmoreheavilyagainsttheshaftattheother.Intheworstcaseagapmayopen,compromisingthesealing,orthesealmaybindontheshaft.Althoughfeltsealsareshownintheillustration,asimilarsituationoccurswithlabyrinthorlipseals.

SEALTYPESCartridgesforshaftsizesupto300mm/12”areusuallysuppliedwithageneralpurposefeltseal.Thefeltgroovewillalsoaccommodatehightemperaturepackingseals,lippedsealsorsuitableblankingplates.

Triplelabyrinthsealsareoftensuppliedasanalternativeandareprecisionnon-rubbingsealscapableofhighspeedoperation.Duetothealigningfeaturedescribedabove,extremelyclosetolerancescanbemaintainedbetweenthehousingandtheshaft.Theresultisaneffectivesealingelementwhichisoneofthebestintheanti-frictionbearingindustry.

Cartridgesforshaftsizesover300mm/12”aresuppliedwithgreasegroovesealsasstandard.Cooperofferawiderangeofsealingoptions,themorecommonofwhichareillustratedoverleaf.Forspecialapplicationssealsmaybemadefromothermaterialsandalternativespecialsealscanbesuppliedtosuitspecificconditions.

Thispictureillustratesanaluminiumtriplelabyrinthsealonan01ESeriesbearingandcartridge.Thetwin‘O’ringsarevisibleintheboreoftheseal.Thecompressionofthe‘O’ringscausesthesealtorotatewiththeshaft,buttheamountofcompressionissodesignedthattheshaftmovesthroughthesealwhenaxialexpansionoccursinEXbearings.

Onsizesupto90mm/3½”blankingplatesaccommodatingthrustbearingscanbeusedforaxiallocationofshafts.Atypicalapplicationisontheshaftsofbeltconveyors.

Forblankingplateswiththrustbearings,theshaftendsmustbemachinedsmoothandsquare.Uponassembly,theremustbeslightclearancebetweentheshaftendsandthethrustbearings(i.e.slightendfloat),withoutthepossibilityofpreload.Blankingplateswiththrustbearingsarelimitedtoamaximumspeedof20,000mmdn(calculatedusingtheshaftsize,nottheboreofthethrustbearing)andtoshaftlocationonly(i.e.onlynominalaxialloading).

INSTALLATIONANDASSEMBLYThefollowingisatypicalassemblysequenceofapedestalorflangemountedbearingandisincludedtoallowengineersusingthiscataloguetounderstandtheassemblyprocessoftheCooperbearingandtoallowthemtoproducerelevantdocumentationfortheirownmachines,whichmayrequirethisinformation.Afullsetofassemblyinstructionsisusuallypackagedwitheachstandardbearing,forusebythefitters.Ifnon-standardbearingsaretobeused,and/oradifferentassemblysequenceisrequiredfortheapplication,specificassemblyinstructionscanbesuppliedonrequest.

Theillustrationsuseapedestalmountedunitasanexample.

PRELIMINARYNOTESBearingsmustbedisassembledbeforeassemblingintoposition.

Unwrapthebearingparts,removetheouterracehalves(ifsuppliedassembledaroundotherparts),andseparatethehalvesofthecage(ifrequired).Variouscagejointingmethodsareuseddependingonsizeandseriesofbearing.Undotheclampingringscrewsandremovetheclampingringsfromtheinnerrace.

Removethepreservativefromallsurfacesofalltheparts.

Allbearingandhousingcomponents(withtheexceptionofpressedsteel,diecastandplasticcages)aremarkedwithmatchingnumbersorlettersoneachhalf.Ensurethatthematchmarksonthehalvesarethesameandareplacedtogetheroneachcomponentwhenthebearingisassembled.

Eventhoughcagehalvesarenotnecessarilymatch-marked,theymustnotbemixed,astherollersaregradedintosets.

CompleterollerbearingsareinterchangeablebetweensimilarCoopercartridges.Individualpartsshouldnotbeinterchanged.Cartridgesareinterchangeablebetweenstandardouterhousingsprovidedthatstandardclearancesarespecified.

STEP1–HOUSINGBASEPlacethepedestalbaseorflangelowerhalfintoposition.Ifthepreciselocationofthehousingispredetermineditmaybeboltedintoposition.Generally,pedestalbasesmayrequireslightmovementatalaterstageinordertoaccuratelypositiontheshaft.

Note: The pedestal base is not shown in most of the illustrations that follow, for clarity of other details.

STEP2–INNERRACELightlyoiltheshaftwiththinmachineoil,thenremovetheexcesswithacleanwiper.Placetheinnerraceatthecorrectpositiononthecleanedshaft.Softpackingonthejointfaces,orfeelergauges,shouldbeusedtoensurethatthejointgapsareapproximatelyequal.Innerracesofexpansionbearingsareusuallysetcentrallywiththeouterrace,butincasesofsignificantaxialexpansiontheremaybeadeliberateoffset.(Thisisusuallyuptoamaximumof10%oftherollerlength,butmaybemoreinthecaseofspecialtypesofbearing).

STEP3–CLAMPINGRINGSFittheclampingringswithjointsatapproximately90°totheinnerracejoints(45°inthecaseoflargebearingswith4-partclampingrings).Progressivelytightenallclampingringscrews.

Tapdowneachhalfoftheinnerraceandclampingringsallaroundtheshaftusingasoft-facedhammer,orinsertahardwoodblockbetweenasteelhammerandthebearingparts.Retightentheclampingringscrews.Repeatuntilscrewsremainfullytight.

Checkthatthereareapproximatelyequalgapsatbothjointsoftheinnerrace.

Checkthatthereareapproximatelyequaljointsatboth(orall4)jointsofeachclampingring.

STEP4–CAGEANDROLLERSCoattheboreofthecageandrollerassemblywithgreaseandlightlycovertheinnerraceassembly(fittedtotheshaft)alloverwithgreaseforprotection.

Assemblethecage(completewithrollers)aroundtheinnerrace.Thetwohalvesofthecagearefixedtogetherbyvariousmeansdependingonsizeandseriesofbearing.(Furtherdetailsaretobefoundintheassemblyleafletssuppliedwiththebearing,ordetailsofthejointofaparticularsizeandseriesofcagecanbesuppliedonrequest).

STEP5–CARTRIDGEANDOUTERRACESUB-ASSEMBLYPlacethehalfouterracewiththelubricationholeinthetophalfofthecartridgeandthesecondhalfouterraceintothelowerhalfofthecartridge.Ensurethattheendsoftheouterraceprojectfromthecartridgejointfacebyequalamounts.Alllippedouterracesmustbeclampedaxially.Sidescrews‘A’arefittedtoallGRcartridges.Siderods‘B’arefittedtosomesizesonly.

CARTRIDGESFORLIPPEDOUTERRACES(GRANDSPECIALTYPES):Justenterradialscrews‘C’(wherefitted,completewithwashers)intothecorrespondingouterraceholes,butdonottighten.Placethetwohalfcartridgestogether,completewithouterraces,andfullytightenthejointscrews‘D’.Enterthesiderods‘B’(wherefitted)andsidescrews‘A’.Progressivelyandfullytightenthesidescrews‘A’andradialscrews‘C’(wherefitted).

ALLTYPES:Injectgreasetofillthegreasepassages.Removejointscrews‘D’andseparatecartridgehalves,takingcarethattheouterracehalvesdonotfalloutofpositionintheirrespectivehalf-cartridges.

STEP6–SEALSIftheunitistobefittedwithaluminiumtriplelabyrinth(ATL)seals,fitthemontotheshaftasfollows:

SeparatetheATLsealhalvesbydrivingoutthetwojointingpins.Lubricatethe‘O’ringsintheborewithgrease.Reassembleontheshaftbycompressingthe‘O’ringsofbothhalvessufficientlytoallowthejointingpinstobereinserted,andreinsertthepins.Note:ATLsealsareabletoslidealongtheshaftonceassembled

Feltsealsshouldbesoakedinoilbeforefittingintothecartridgeendbores.MosttypesofsealotherthantriplelabyrinthsealsandSRSRPsealsarefittedintothecartridgeendboresbeforeassemblingthecartridgeintoposition.

STEP7–LUBRICATIONCoattheinsideofthecartridge,cageandrollersandallsealswithgrease(Seepage18forcorrectquantity).Forspeedsover150,000mmdn(shaftdiameterinmmmultipliedbyshaftspeedinrpm)approximately40%ofthegreaseusedshouldbeappliedtothebearingpartsandtheremainderappliedtotheinsideofthecartridge.Thisistoavoidexcessivechurningofgreasewhenrunningathighspeed.

Placethetophalfofthecartridgeontopofthebottomhalf,closethecartridgeandfullytightenthejointscrews.Lubricatethesphericalseatingwithgrease.

STEP9–HOUSINGIfnotalreadydone,tightentheboltsfixingthepedestalbaseorlowerflangehalfintoposition.Placethepedestalcaporflangetophalfintoposition.Ifitissafetodoso,runningtheshaftforatimewithouttheouterhousingjointscrewsfullytightenedwillhelpthebearingtoaccuratelyalign.Fullytightenthejointscrews.

Generally,thebearingsandcartridgesarestandard01,01E,02or02ESeriesunits.Insomecasescartridgesandbearingsofreducedoutsidediameterareusedinordertoprovideadequatepedestalbasethickness.However,theloadratingsofthestandardbearingsofthesameboresizestillapply.

TheCooperpedestalshaveboltholespacingsandheightstocentrescorrespondingtotheequivalentindustrystandardunitsforsolidbearings.However,thefootprint,overallpedestalheightandlengthonshaftmaydifferandshouldbecheckedagainstavailablespace.

ThetablesonthefollowingpageslisttheCooperpedestalswiththebearingandcartridgeofthesameboresizeastheshaftdiameterthatiscommonlyaccommodatedintheequivalentpillowblockwithasolidbearingmountedonanadaptorsleeve.ThesepedestalsmayalsobeusedwithalternativesizesofCooperbearing.Bearingsandcartridgesofthesamegroupsize(astabulatedinthemainbearing,cartridgeandpedestalpages)maybeaccommodatedinthesamepedestal.Inmanycases,bearingsandcartridgesofdifferentseriesmayalsobeaccommodatedinthethesepedestals,providinganevenwiderchoiceofboresizeswherethepedestaldimensionsareappropriateandloadingconditionspermit.

The100Seriesunitsofferthelowesthousingfrontalareaforagivenshaftdiameter.

Thebearingismounteddirectlyintoasplitgreyironhousing(‘hanger’)withathreadedboss,toallowsuspensionfromtheconveyorcross-bracing.Aswivelfixingatthecross-bracingjointisrecommendedtoprovideforalignmentofthebearing.

Hangersareonlysuitableforhousingexpansion(‘EX’)typebearings.

Doublefeltsealsaresuppliedasstandard.Thestandardsealgroovesarealsoabletoaccommodaterubberlipsealsorhightemperaturepacking.Atappedholeincommunicationwiththespacebetweenthesealgroovesateachendofthehousingisoptionallyprovided.Thisisforconnectiontoeitheragreasesupplyoranairsupplyforregularorcontinuouspurgingoftheseals.

Anotheroptionisforthehousingendborestobemachinedtotakeheavydutylipsealsasillustratedbelow.Thelengthonshaftoftheseunitsmaybeslightlygreaterthanstandard;detailswillbesuppliedonrequest.

Itisrecommendedthatourtechnicaldepartmentiscontactedinordertoobtainarecommendationforthesealingofeachhangerunitapplication.

Lubricationpointsarenotfittedtohangersasstandard,withprovisionforlubricationofthebearingusuallymadethroughthesuspensionrod.Continuousgreasefeedissometimesdesirable.

Standardrodendsareofgreyiron.Spheroidalgraphiteironorsteelversionsareavailable.Rodendsaresuppliedwithmatchedcartridgeto

reducetheclearancebetweenthecartridgeandrod-end(S1fit).

Exceptforveryslowspeedapplications,bearingswithC2clearanceshouldbespecified.Dimensionsandloadcapacitiesofhousingsshouldbeconfirmedbeforefinalisingdesigns.

CoopersplittaperedrollerbearingsareusuallymountedinacartridgeinasimilarwaytoCoopercylindricalbearings.Cartridgesfortaperedbearingsaremachinedwithgreasegroovesealsasstandardandprovisionmadeforatemperatureelement.Alternativesealtypesareavailableaspage10and11,andflange-mountedunitsmaybesuppliedwithbulkhead

sealingarrangements.Theproximityofthetemperatureelementholetotheshaftmeansthatifitisofaheadedtype,generallyitwillhavetohaveacrankedprobe.Alternativepositionsforthetemperatureelementarepossible.

Thecartridgeismountedbyitssphericalseatinanouterhousing.Varioushousingtypesareavailable,asforcylindricalbearings,butthemostcommontypesarethepedestalandflange.Coopertechnicaldepartmentshouldbeconsultedtoconfirmhousingstrengthagainsttheanticipatedloadsbeforefinalisingselection.Ductileironhousingsaregenerallyusedwiththesebearings,asindicatedbythepartnumberslistedonthefollowingpages.
