Indices endured a lackluster session amidst robust turnover. ASPI ended

marginally lower to close at 6,376.0 while S&PSL20 index closed with a

marginal gain of 9.1 points at 3,543.6 (+0.3%). Turnover stood at LKR4.7 bn

(USD36,191.2K) vs the 12 month daily average of LKR840.2 mn (USD6,447.1k)

while 157,510.2k shares were traded for the day vs 12 month average daily

volume of 41,143.k. Foreigners were net buyers where foreign purchases stood

at LKR2.0 bn (USD15,632.9.k) whilst foreign sales were LKR1.0 bn

(USD7,757.4k). Top traded counters were John Keells Holdings LKR2,736.9

mn (USD21,000.9k, +1.1%), Access Engineering LKR778.3 mn

(USD5,971.9k, +6.0%), Adam Investments LKR262.2 mn (USD2,012.2k, -

6.8%), Sunshine Holdings LKR206.2 mn (USD1,582.3k, -2.7%) and

Commercial Bank LKR100.0 mn (USD767.1k, +1.0%)

Turnover levels surpassed LKR4.0bn during trading backed by notable off-

board transactions. John Keells Holdings spearheaded the daily turnover with

a contribution of c. 57%. The counter witnessed both foreign and local

participation backed by 19 off-board transactions aggregating to 9.4mn shares

which changed hands at LKR220.0. Furthermore Access Engineering

witnessed high networth activity where the counter showcased 10 crossing

accumulating to 26.0 mn shares carrying at LKR25.0. In addition Adam

Investments gathered widespread investor interest whilst Sunshine Holdings

depicted local interest. The former saw a single off-board block of 6.3mn shares

at LKR32.0. Moreover commercial bank reported foreign accumulation with

several mid sized on-board blocks being transacted at different prices.

Banking Finance and Insurance sector further extended gains and several

counters extended their 52-week highs including Commercial Bank [Voting]

and [Non-Voting] and Nations Trust Bank. Furthermore Access Engineering

surged to a 52-week high and rallied to an intra day peak of LKR26.9 to settle

the day at LKR26.5 with a gain of 6.0%. Meanwhile Adam Investments which

witnessed a speculative run last few days witnessed profit taking where the

counter declined by 6.8% to close the day at LKR5.5. In addition renewed

investor interest was also seen in the poultry counter Three Acre Farms

(+4.0%).

Most Sri Lanka banks and finance firms submit merger plans: Central Bank 01 Jul, 2014 07:06:41

July 01, 2014 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's central bank said 'almost all' banks and finance companies have submitted plans to merge or acquire others in a regulatory driven push to consolidate and reduce the number of financial institutions in the country. "These plans will now be reviewed by the Central Bank with a view to facilitating the respective companies to proceed further," the Central Banks said in a statement.

"In addition, as requested by the Central Bank, the Panel of Audit Firms continued their transaction management activities to facilitate the negotiation process between financial institutions in an independent manner."

DFCC Bank and the National Development Bank PLC were working on a merger, and Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka, MBSL Savings Bank and MCSL Financial Services, which were group companies were also going forward with their merger.

Secondary bond markets remain bullish on upbeat statistics The expectations and final outcome on inflation for the month of June coupled with speculation on next month’s monetary policy announcement in line with the newly-released monetary sector credit numbers saw secondary market bond yields dip further yesterday amidst heavy trading activity. Inflation for the month of June continued its decreasing trend as the point to point was seen hitting a 28 month low of 2.8% against its previous month’s figure of 3.2% while its annualised average decreased to a 46 month low of 4.9% against its previous month’s figure of 5.3%. In the monetary sector, credit to the private sector from commercial banks continued to decline reflecting a dip of Rs. 15.7 billion in April followed by a decrease in net credit to the Government by Rs. 6.8 while credit to corporations reflected a marginal increase of Rs. 1.1 b. Secondary market yields were seen dipping across the yield curve mainly on the market favourite maturities of 15 May 2017, 1 April 2018, 15 August 2018, 1 July 2019, 1 May 2021 and 1 July 2022 to intraday lows 7.43%, 8.04%, 8.10%, 8.50%, 9.08% and 9.55% respectively against their previous day’s closing levels of 7.52/54, 8.15/18, 8.24/27, 8.62/64, 9.23/26 and 9.72/76. However, selling interest towards the latter part of the day on profit taking throttled any further downward movement. Meanwhile in money markets, overnight call money and repo rates remained steady to average 6.96% and 6.54% respectively despite surplus liquidity decreasing to Rs. 13.56 billion yesterday. The Open Market Operations (OMO) department of Central Bank was seen mopping up an amount of Rs. 6.65 b on an overnight basis at a weighted average rate of 6.54%, while a further Rs 6.91 b was deposited at Central bank’s Standing Deposit Facility Rate (SDFR) of 6.50%. The dollar/rupee rate was seen closing the day steady at Rs. 130.33/35 yesterday as markets were at equilibrium. The total USD/LKR traded volumes for 27 June stood at $ 59.77 million. Some of the forward dollar rates that prevailed in the market were: one month – 130.78; three months – 131.64; and six months – 132.74.
