Dear Mr. Anton,

Realino Foundation, until now, still seeking scholarships for children from poor families. Education is still the most important aspect for human life, if we want to alleviate the children from

their poverty, we need to give them adequate education. But, in our consideration, the poor children

need basic education and vocational education. Through that level of education, they can survive

because they can find job for living. Continue to pursue higher education are also important but for

the poor it was not urgent, because the most important is they can find job.

On 2016 scholarship applicants more than in 2015 with more complex problems. Based on

the data from the scholarship applicants this year (2017). Scholarship applicants not only

from a poor family but also come from troubled families. Some family problems that we

found are divorce, conflict, struggle for inheritance, and other problems. Family problems

interfere the entire family life, including economic problems. Divorcing parents make the

economic situation is unstable, and the children become victims, they find difficulties to send

their children to school because of economic condition. Scholarship applicants who come

from divorced families nearly 30% of all applicants.

With the complexity of the problems especially family problems, we estimate that there will

be many applicants’ scholarships especially those who come from troubled families. We

reflect that increased prosperity does not guarantee family life can live well.

Based from the data of the applicant, we have new awareness when we visited some

elementary school in Jogjakarta. We realized that there are a lot of families that face

difficulties to send their children to school due to economic conditions. We saw the economic

discrepancy 1between the rich and the poor. Unfortunately, there are a lot of poor families

that not get support from government. From that data, we reflected and decided that the

urban poor are priority for us to help.

Realino still want to help children from poor families of this, and because of our limitations,

we still need help. So, again, we invite the board of the SKPI to support us by give

scholarship to the poor children. Through your help and support, we can send more and more

children to go to school, giving them hope for the better future.

II. Project

1. Organization

Realino Foundation has two projects. First, distribution of scholarship for the poor children

from the donor as a main project. Second, empowerment project for the poor; street children,

homeless, etc. We initiatives workshop/training in wood and welding for the young people,

electronics and accompanying children in the slum.

The aim of the main project is; education for the poor children. All Children have their rights

to get education to prepare their future. The problem is that many children still cannot go to

school because of the economic condition. The government has been trying to pay attention

with various assistance but there are still many children who don’t have access to get the

assistance.

Based on that awareness, the strategies to perform this project are:

Finding donors (from communities, institutions or individuals) and we offer the rich

families to be foster parents of the poor children. We attempted to provide complete data

so that donors are sure that they are helping the poor child.

Working in a team. We involve volunteers which are university students who around the

time of application (June) would usually be in their semester break. During the semester

break, they usually go back to their hometown. We ask them to observe and interview

applicants for our scholarship program from their own village. They use a form of

observation and interviews that we specify. For example, the university student from

Wonosari will visit and interview scholarship applicants from Wonosari and so on. So it

is possible to visit the scholarship applicant one by one.

2. Description of the project

All children have rights to get education, especially the poor. Through education, people will

have bigger chance to make a better future. This awareness makes us try to find donors to pay

the schools tuition for that poor student.

In my proposal (2018), I have targeted to give scholarship for 430 students and I requested

SKPI to support 210 students from 430 students we targeted. We try to get donation from

local donors for 220 students. We estimate average school fees based last semester tuition.

We have estimation for elementary is Rp. 350.000/semester, junior school is Rp.

420.000/semester and for the vocational high school is Rp. 900.000/semester. We open

registration for applicant 1-20 of June, and all applicants will be selected (observation and

interview) and announced on July 20. We can’t predict how much new applicant will apply,

in what grade they are, and how much the school tuition. So the estimation can be missed. If

it happened, we will adjust the number of children to be assisted.

We give the scholarship depending on the condition of the parents. Most of the parents asked

support only for school tuition. But, some parents also need more support. They also asked

support for books and school uniforms. The proposal that we give to you is scholarship that is

only for school tuition.

We tried to involve schools and parents to determine the amount of scholarships will be

given. Because of these considerations, the scholarship amount will be different.

Differences in the amount of scholarships are based on several considerations:

Depending on the School Committee.

The different amount of the scholarship depends on the kind of school, either public or

private school. First, usually the school tuition of private school is more expensive than

public school. Second, to decide the school tuition, the government asked each school to

make the “school committee”. The School Committee consist of several element;

representatives of teachers, parents, advisory, government, etc. The School Committee

will consider and decide the school policy, including school tuition, payment of books,

uniforms, etc. So each school can make a different decision about the tuition.

Nowadays, government often changes the policy in education, almost every year they

change the policy, especially in term of subsidy for school tuition. They want to find the

better system but the consequences are the school tuition that always change.

Depending on the condition of the parents.

Our scholarship program do not merely support parents to pay school tuition. We also

asked contribution from the parents. Principally we collaborate with parents. We

encourage parents not to solely depend on us, but they should strive to contribute to the

education of their own children. No matter what or how much contribution they can

give, the most important thing is their effort to support their children. Some parents can

contribute 25% of the school tuition. Some parents can provide uniforms and books for

their own children.

Depending on the results of observations and interviews.

We base our decisions of the amount of the scholarship given on the observations and

interviews with the applicants and the parents. If we realize that the parents need more

support, we will try to give more. But if according to observations and interviews the

parents have capability to give contribution to their children, we asked them to give a

contribution.

3. Purpose and Aim

Targets of this project are poor children can complete primary education (elementary and

junior high school) and gain skills from vocational schools. We have targeted 430 children

from elementary schools to vocational high school and 7 young people undergoing training in

the workshop.

There are many things that unpredictable when accepting scholarship applicants:

The school tuition

Every year we have discussed with the school and parents to decide the scholarship we

will give to the student. Nonetheless, we have to estimate the school tuition. We have

estimation for elementary is Rp. 350.000/semester, junior school is Rp. 420.000/semester

and for the vocational high school is Rp. 900.000/semester. We prioritize donations from

SPKI for elementary school students and junior high school student.

The applicant

Every year, we can’t predict how much student from elementary, junior high school and

vocational high school student will apply. In 2017, we have a target to receive 450

applicant. We did not impose the number of the candidates based on the targets but based

on selection. After selection process, we received 422 children. From 422 student, SKPI

helps 251 student; 88 elementary student, 145 junior high school student and 16

vocational school student.

In 2018, we have a target to give scholarships to 430 children. From that number, we asked

SKPI to support 205 children, the rest, we will look for local donors. We are aware that it is

not easy to find a local donor, but we should try to involve everyone to care these poor

children. We invite local institution and individual to support these children through some

programs; foster parent, peer helper, etc. Attempts to involve local donors also encourages

them to care to the poor.

4. Planning

The project will be for one year and will be annually renewed.

5. Evaluation

Evaluation is done by academic result of scholarship recipients. Evaluation for the training

workshop is done by observing workshop productivity; more productivity means more skilled

trainees.
