6. Research Workshops
Sightsavers recently granted AVRI an award to build research capacity through training in four African countries. As such, AVRI identified four institutions in Africa to participate in this program. Each Institution was required to select the best candidate (1 per institution) to attend the training workshops, with a specification that the candidate be able to provide mentorship and transfer the research skills learnt to other staff and students at their respective institutions.
The workshop targeted non-governmental organizations, researchers, academics, postgraduate students and research institutes as well as professional associations.

AVRI RESEARCH UPDATE

1. Research Methodology course provided an introduction to:− Introduction – What is Research− Public Health Research− Definition of Research Terms− Research Designs− Types of Research− Qualitative Research− Qualitative Methods− Qualitative Data Analysis− Sampling Techniques− Issue in Public Health/ Eye Research− Developing a Research Proposal
2. Statistical Analysis course provided a background on: background on:− Introduction to Basic Statistics − Descriptive Statistics (Data Analysis)− Statistical Inference or Statistical Testing − Basic theories behind the use of Stata
Evaluation of the WorkshopOn the last day of the workshop, participants were asked to evaluate the training during a discussion session with the AVRI CEO and the Research Co-ordinator. The overall feedback was that the workshop was beneficial in that it helped participants to understand the underlying principles of research, but as is often the case with short courses, there was insufficient time. The Research Methodology and Statistic workshop facilitators were confident that the objectives of the workshop were achieved. However, participants felt that a more “hands on” or “practical based” approach especially with regard to statistics and Stata would have been more beneficial to them. However, considering the background of most participants, the Statistics and Stata sessions seems to have been overwhelming because most of the participants did not have any statistical background. In consideration of the views expressed and the suggestions made by participants, it was decided that a more hands–on approach to statistics and the use of the Stata program would be undertaken later in the year. In general, all participants were satisfied with the level of knowledge and skill that they had acquired from the workshop and were pleased with the facilitation of the workshop.
Outcomes and Way Forward The workshop was of immense benefit to all participants. The Research overview presented during the Work was perceived by all participants as
being very informative and as having provided the basic background that one needs to have in order to design and implement a research project.
Most of the participants had suggested that more practical sessions and home work needed to be included during these workshops, to give them hands on experience with the application of the basic stats learnt with the Stata software without being facilitated.

AVRI RESEARCH UPDATE
November 2011
The AVRI website (www.avri.co.za) has been updated. This website will be used as a mode of transmission of all research activities conducted by AVRI and all relevant information to the African eye care community. This will ensure that newsletters and information will become available to anyone requiring insight into AVRI, with particular attention being placed on funding for research activities and training courses.
14. African Vision Research Network (AVREN)
AVRI is currently in the process of setting up a research network, which will create research links to provide support to research teams to communicate and coordinate their eye health research efforts across disciplines, organizations, institutions and geographical boundaries. Proposed networking activities will focus on specific eye health research niches, such as Diabetic Retinopathy, Refractive Error, and Primary Eye Care to give coherence to the collaboration. Networking, where possible, will be encouraged to include Sightsavers country teams.
The development of AVREN forms part of the funding received from Sightsavers and will be facilitated through the AVRI website. A section on the AVRI website will be dedicated to AVREN in order to offer a forum for an exchange of ideas, resources and skills. The intension is to expand this network to all African institutes.
The objectives of the research network are to: Facilitate open communication and exchange of information and resources Integrate research activities of researchers working independently on topics of common
interest Nurture a sense of community among young and emerging researchers Minimize isolation of efforts Maximize cooperation so as to eliminate unnecessary duplication of research projects
The design of the network has thus far been commissioned by AVRI and the network is expected to become active in January 2012.
