Chapter 1 - Contextual Study – Week 1Broadchurch (2013) research

The television show ‘Broadchurch’ was broadcasted on the 4th of March 2013. The series was created/written by writer/producer Chris Chibnall.

Chris Chibnall is 48, and avid Doctor who fan, possibly reason why David tenant was chosen for lead detective role.

The main stars the programme are David Tennant, Olivia Coleman, Jodie Whitaker and Andrew Buchan.

Location: West Bay, Dorset, England, UK

Season 1 Episode 1, was directed by James strong.

Broadchurch is under the Production Company’s; Kudos Film and Television who are part of endomof shine group. Imaginary friends as well as ITV – Independent Television. Kudos production co, previously worked/produced the series called ‘UTOPIA’ (NOTE: research series)

Within social aspect the Madeline McCann case at the time of production and airing was still within the early years as well as media. The child in the series was male which typically is a gender that gets ‘overlooked’ in missing cases (NOTE: check how many missing boys there where in 2013 that where not largely reported). Another possible link to McCann case with the mother of the boy looking in on him.

Using the beach location typically contextualised with happiness and fun. The beach is also typically connected in peoples mind with childhood fun with family and or friends. During first view scenes after title shows main female character wake up abruptly like what we previously just viewed was nothing but a nightmare.

Social media hinted at a lot especially twitter.

Ticking clock with scene straight after showing the character Danny’s bedroom door which could have been included to show the time for Danny is running out.

Reference from female character Danny’s mum the all clocks stopped at exactly same time maybe showing Danny’s time has come to a stop also? Reference of death. Mention of tradesmen’s discount possible reference to political and economic climate in 2013.

Use of scene with sign post in with poster saying ‘Love thy neighbour as thyself’ very emotive as there have been murders in small towns where ‘supposedly’ everyone knew everyone but how well do they actually know them. Only in passing like in the scene where the dad meanders through the street greeting people possible even his son’s killer. ‘Got to have class to eat here’ mention of

So far I believe my group and I have captured a image with similar likeness, the framing is almost the same. I have also noticed that our images are not as clear or as focused as in the screenshots. One of the issue we encountered on our first go was that we didn’t talk to each other as a cohesive team, which in turn lead to many confusions as well as out ‘actors’ not being fully aware of what was being asked of them.
