+ TENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY +Prayer and Preaching

August 8, 2021

As We Gather ~ Jesus Weeps for JerusalemOur Lord wept over Jerusalem for the destruction that would soon come upon her. For she did not recognize the time of God’s visitation in Christ, who had come to bring her peace (Luke 19:41–48). Through His prophets God had consistently called His people to turn from their deceit and false wor-ship. “But My people do not know the judgments of the Lord” (Jer. 8:4–12). They sought to establish their own righteousness rather than receive Christ’s righteousness through faith (Rom. 9:30–10:4). So it was that God was in His temple to cleanse it, a precursor to the once-for-all cleansing from sin which He would accomplish in the temple of His own body on the cross. God grant us to know the things that make for our peace—His visitation in the Word and Sacraments—that by the Holy Spirit we may penitently confess “Jesus is Lord” (1 Cor. 12:1–11).

Reading Jeremiah 8:4–12 4“You shall say to them, Thus says the LORD: When men fall, do they not rise again? If one turns away, does he not return? 5Why then has this people turned away in perpetual backsliding? They hold fast to deceit; they refuse to return.

6I have paid attention and listened, but they have not spoken rightly; no man relents of his evil, saying, ‘What have I done?’ Everyone turns to his own course, like a horse plunging headlong into battle. 7Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the just decrees of the LORD. 8“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us’? But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. 9The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them? 10Therefore I will give their wives to others and their fields to conquerors, because from the least to the greatest everyone is greedy for unjust gain; from prophet to priest, everyone deals falsely. 11They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace. 12Were they ashamed when they committed abomination? No, they were not at all ashamed; they did not know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among the fallen; when I punish them, they shall be overthrown, says the LORD”. L This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Introit Psalm 55:1, 4–5, 16; antiphon: vv. 16a, 17b, 18a, 22a

I call to God, and he | hears my voice;* he redeems my soul in | safety. Cast your burden | on the LORD,* and he will sus- | tain you. Give ear to my prayer, | O God,* and hide not yourself from my plea for | mercy! My heart is in anguish with- | in me;* the terrors of death have fallen up- | on me. Fear and trembling come up- | on me,* and horror over- | whelms me. But I | call to God,* and the LORD will | save me. Glory be to the Father and | to the Son* and to the Holy | Spirit; as it was in the be- | ginning,* is now, and will be forever. | Amen. I call to God, and he | hears my voice;* he redeems my soul in | safety. Cast your burden | on the LORD,* and he will sus- | tain you.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Reading 1 Corinthians 12:1–11 1Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be unin-formed. 2You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activi-ties, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spir-it, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Reading Luke 19:41–48 41When [Jesus] drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, 42say-ing, “Would that you, even you, had known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. 43For the days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you and hem you in on every side 44and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your visitation.” 45And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold, 46saying to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a den of robbers.” 47And he was teaching daily in the temple. The chief priests and the scribes and the principal men of the people were seeking to destroy him, 48but they did not find anything they could do, for all the people were hang-ing on his words.

A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Apostles’ CreedI believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Lord’s PrayerOur Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Scripture Lessons for next Sunday: Isaiah 61:7–11, Galatians 4:4–7 and Luke 1:39–55.

Stewardship: Luke 19:45 – “And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold.” The House of God is a House of Prayer. It’s not a place to sell but to give. It’s not a place of profit but of sacrifice. God sets the pattern of giving and sacrifice in the self-giving work of Jesus on the cross. As He is, so we are called to be.

August calendars, newsletters and new portals of prayers are in your boxes and on the entryway table.

Please check your boxes for a new issue of IDE Today and check out the entryway table for complimentary copies of Lutheran Life. Download their free app at cph.org/llapp and keep Lutheran Life and other CPH resources with you no matter where God guides you.

Building Healthy Families for Aug. 8th: Did You Know: For peo-ple who use texting on their phone to communicate with others, the average number of text messages send and received on a weekday is…94! Many of us are in constant communication with others and connected to devices most hours of the day. But sometimes that connection becomes a distraction. If you’re not texting regularly – or if you are and need a break – remember to take advantage of the most important form of communication we have, which is available any time – day or night: “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” I Thessalonians 5:16-18 ~ Lutheran Family Service of Iowa: Des Moines (515) 251-4900. www.LutheranFamilyService.org

Life Quote for Aug. 8th: “Let us recognize that the patterns of the past point not only to our need for a Savior, but also to the work Christ has accomplished for us. Let us live as For Life people, con-fident that our future is founded on promises that will be kept. And let us rejoice in the opportunities we have to share the message of LIFE with others!” Michelle Bauman, Director of Y4Life for Luther-ans For Life ~ A “Life Quote” from Lutherans For Lifewww.lutheransforlife.org

Lutheran Hour Ministries for Aug. 15th: Hear “A Sunny Place for Shady People” based on Ephesians 5:8 by Dr. Oswald Hoffmann.“Archives August”. The life of a notorious saint shows how the grace of God makes the Church a sunny place for shady people. ~ Listen next Sunday on 600 WMT at 6:30 a.m., 1190 KFJB at 8:30 a.m., WHO-1040 at 7:30 a.m., & 1410 KGRN at 7:30 a.m.

Life Thoughts in the Church Year: With God’s prophets we call the culture around us to turn away from the destruction they are bringing upon themselves (Jeremiah 8:5, 11; Luke 19:43-44). With us they each remain precious to Jesus, who by His visitation in the flesh (Luke 19:44) for forgiveness delivers the Gospel that makes for peace (Luke 19:42) and righteousness (Romans 10:4). O Lord God, intervene and redeem our people that we may behold and inhabit Your kingdom. Amen.

THE LWML NOISY BUCKET IS BACK!!!Start saving your change – the NOISY BUCKET will be out on Sunday, August 29, 2021 (Immanuel’s Christian Education Sunday)! We will be collecting change (and paper money) for the Iowa East District LWML Mission Grants. Due to the Corona virus, churches not having LWML meetings, our zones not having rallies, and churches not having in-person services, the District Mites are behind for the 2020-2022 by about $50,000. We put all things in God’s hands – our Mission Grant projects (a list of those is on the bulletin board by the kitchen), our bless-ings, and our contributions. Thank you in advance for your contributions on Sunday, August 29th.

In other LWML news, I want to thank the members of Immanuel that contributed items for the Gifts from the Heart projects that were collected at our National Convention held in Lexington, KY from June 24-27: Overall, almost 500 boxes and packages of diapers, almost 500 baby blankets, almost 900 burp cloths and bibs, over 1320 packages of baby wipes, and almost 1200 toys, teethers, and pacifiers were collected for the Assurance for Life Ministries in Lexington; 6008 pairs of eyeglasses were collected for MOST Ministries (Mission Opportunities Short Term), and $33,270 in gift cards, plus 444 more gift cards that were not marked monetarily for our two Seminaries (Ft. Worth and St. Louis) Food Banks and Co-ops. In addition to all of these contributions our church (ladies and children) colored cards for cancer patients for Phil’s Friends and also sent bracelets and crocheted puppets to MOST Ministries.

Events coming up for ALL women of Immanuel to be thinking about attending are:1. September 11, 2021 - Fall Retreat at Camp Io-Dis-E-Ca – see information and Registration in the bulletin. Kids are WECOME!!2. October 30, 2021- Marshalltown Zone Rally held at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Lacona. Gary Thies will be the guest speaker.3. June 10-11, 2022 – Iowa East LWML Convention at Hilton Garden Inn, Cedar Falls.

In closing, remember all women that are members of Immanuel are considered members of LWML also. If you are free from 11:30 – 1:00, on the 2nd Monday any month, we welcome you to attend our meeting and Bible study with Pastor Koepp.

Serving the Lord with gladness,Pam H.
