4:00pm Garden Service

at 4 Melton Road, Langham

Welcome and Opening Prayer

Grace, mercy and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

And also with you.

This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Loving Lord,

fill us with your life-giving, joy-giving, peace-giving presence,

that we may praise you now with our lips and all day long with our lives

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Hymn

1. Colours of day dawn into the mind, the sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street,

and let's give the message to the people we meet.

So light up the fire and let the flame burn, open the door, let Jesus return. Take seeds of his Spirit, let the fruit grow,

tell the people of Jesus, let his love show.

2. Go through the park, on into the town; the sun still shines on;, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again;

the people of darkness are needing a friend.

3. Open your eyes, look into the sky,

the darkness has come, the sun came to die. The evening draws on, the sun disappears, but Jesus is living, his Spirit is near.

Words: Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949) Music: Light Up The Fire, Sue McClellan (b 1951), John Paculabo (1946-2013) & Keith Ryecroft (b 1949), arr Paul

Confession

We come to God to say sorry

Lord we have done wrong in thought, word and deed,

We are truly sorry and we ask you to forgive us Help us by your Holy Spirit to live a new life.

Amen.

May Almighty God have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins

and bring us to everlasting life. Amen.

Bible Reading – Matthew 13.1-9,18-23

Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. Such great crowds gathered

around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to

sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they

sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among

thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears

listen! Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is

sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet

such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for

what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed

bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

Hymn

1. For the beauty of the earth, for the beauty of the skies,

for the love which from our birth over and around us lies,

Lord of all, to thee we raise

this our sacrifice of praise.

2. For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night,

hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon, and stars of light:

3. For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,

friends on earth, and friends above, pleasures pure and undefiled:

4. For each perfect gift of thine,

to our race so freely given, graces human and divine,

flowers of earth and buds of heaven:

5. For thy church which evermore lifteth holy hands above,

offering up on every shore this pure sacrifice of love,

Words: Folliott Sandford Pierpoint (1835-1917)

Music: England’s Lane, English melody adapted by Geoffrey Turton Shaw (1879-1943) (Ancient & Modern – 537)

Prayers

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done;

on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn

1. Jesus is Lord! Creation’s voice proclaims it, for by his power each tree and flower was planned and made.

Jesus is Lord! The universe declares it, sun, moon and stars in heaven cry: Jesus is Lord!

Jesus is Lord! Jesus is Lord! praise him with Alleluias, for Jesus is Lord!

2. Jesus is Lord! Yet from his throne eternal

in flesh he came to die in pain on Calvary’s tree. Jesus is Lord! From him all life proceeding,

yet gave his life a ransom, thus setting us free:

3. Jesus is Lord! O’er sin the mighty conqueror, from death he rose; and all his foes shall own his name.

Jesus is Lord! God sends his Holy Spirit to show by works of power that Jesus is Lord:

gain self-confidence and pleasure learning to sail with more competent

Greenbelt 2017

Greenbelt is a festival for people who

want to mix things up: art and music, poetry and politics, activism and

spirituality, faith and justice. Iain and Charlotte, our new curates, both love

it – does anyone want to join them for a day trip, on Sunday 27th August? The venue is close, about 45 minutes

drive, at Boughton House near Kettering. We will go under our own

steam, then meet and sit together for the 10:30 Communion service, then

do our own thing for the afternoon and/or evening. There are loads of

interesting talks, mainstage bands, weird and wonderful fringe events,

workshops. See the website for more info. Please contact Iain

([email protected]) for more details.
