Aleksey Ivanovich, the main hero, is tutor in the family of a Russian general living abroad in a small German town where the casino attracts colourful and shady characters from all over Europe. Aleksey starts gambling upon request of Polina, the general’s stepdaughter, to save her from a fortune hunter posing as marquis. The basic theme of “The Gambler” is the complicated love-hate relationship between the hero and Polina and his fateful passion for gambling.

In this great novel which reflects much of his personal experience and a deep understanding of human nature, Dostoevsky depicts with extraordinary talent the society of the rich and idle of the second half of the 19th century.
