Happy summer everyone! I hope you are enjoying a little time off and going on some exciting adventures/vacations. Your board is busy planning for the upcoming GO CSI year. Our first meeting was June 28th and we began planning some exciting events for the year. We talked about ways to make our meetings better and more effective for our members. We also talked about social networking ideas, round table discussions, a CDT boot camp and fundraising ideas for a local charity. Our next meeting will be on July 18th from 12pm - 3pm at the Panera Bread near Florida Hospital. Lunch will be provided to those who can make it. Please give me a call (407-848-4174) or shoot me an email [email protected] to RSVP. I am really looking forward to this coming year. I have a lot I want to accomplish and we are already gaining an immense amount momentum. The volunteers have been pouring in and I'm happy to see some new faces participating in the chapter. Mark your calendars for our kick-off celebration in August, the week of the 22nd. As we finalize our plans and location, we will share more details with you.

CDT Boot Camp for the Spring Test – Montero to contact Chip about the Camp. Get outline, flyers and info to promote the Camp. Try to set up “go to meeting” so people can attend virtually.
Discussion Items –
Consider quarterly seminars that provide several CEUs in one day. A survey will be issued to determine interest. Schedule a 2 hr. required/advanced code seminar in January. Reach out to CSI members for presentations. Try to combine some Chapter meetings with other related associations.
Suggest having seminars that are NOT available to offices as lunch n learns. Former presidents giving presentation on past work in Central Florida.
Round table discussion items with arch/engineer/GC/ sub-contractor and maybe even owner..
Ask folks to help identify speakers for quarterly meetings. Social/Networking activities. Family outing & maybe a bbq, CANstruct, Putt Putt, Thirsty Thursday, Envian Theater – Eden Bar

The 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Greater Orlando, formerly Central Florida, CSI Chapter’s Chartering, was held at the Orlando County Regional History Center on June 3rd. Mr. Lane Beougher, AIA, FCSI, Assoc. DBIA, LEED BD+C, Institute President, made a special presentation to the Chapter with an Institute plaque acknowledging the Chapter’s Fifty Years of service to the industry.

IT IS ALWAYS SAFE TO TALK ABOUT OTHERS AS LONG AS YOU SPEAK OF THEIR GOOD QUALITIES – The old adage, “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all,” is especially valid today. In any organization, regardless of size, the rumor mill works overtime when it comes to negative gossip. And you can be sure that unkind things you say about others will very quickly find their way to them, for it is also a truism that those who talk about others to us talk about us to others. Not only should you not speak badly of others — you should not participate in conversations in which others do. Spend your time with those who focus on important things, and you will never have to apologize for an unkind word uttered in a moment of weakness. NAPOLEON HILL FOUNDATION

REPORT FROM THE BI-REGION CONFERENCE by Linda L. Zimmerman, CSI CDT, LEED GA, MBA (This report will be in several parts due to its length)
Why Does Anyone want to be a leader, especially in CSI? Part 1 I attended a great Leadership Session given by Kathy Proctor (RA, FCSI, CDT, AIA) at the Bi-Regional Conference in Pensacola, Florida, in April. If you want to have better businesses, careers, personal lives and CSI Chapters, read and act on some of the important parts of this two-hour seminar discussed below.
I. CHANGE - The only constant in life is “change.” The challenge of change is not always easy for everyone but is necessary. Someone is leading the change, and, hopefully for the better--leaders move others into change. The future health of your chapter, organization or family depends on new people being prepared for the job ahead—LEADERS + SUCCESSION PLAN = SUCCESS (CSI has 5 levels of Opportunities for Leadership if you are interested.) If an organization is NOT constantly changing and satisfying their customer needs, they will lose business by “standing still”-- losing ground in enthusiasm, growth, learning, knowledge and even ease of life . You probably do not have the same television you had 15 years ago nor the same cellphone you had 3 years ago -- you HAVE adjusted to change, like it or not. The future health of your chapter or other organization(s) depends on new people being prepared for the job ahead. - “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves” -- Lao Tzu, ancient Chinese philosopher/writer CHAPTER LEADER + SUCCESSION PLAN = EFFECTIVE YEAR
II. CHOOSING LEADERS – Leaders have specific qualities, characteristics and traits. If you don’t want to lead the pack, you probably know what type of person you are likely to follow. What happens to you happens to us all — a real leader doesn’t take over as a dictator, but empowers others to do the job using their best qualities, ideas and innovation. What is Leadership Potential? It is those talents, skills and characteristic traits in which, when put to use, inspires others to accomplish a goal. There are lots of people in history who were leaders — some used their leadership skills positively and others used it with devastating consequences.
Characteristics of future leaders as stated in the presentation included positive attitude, enthusiasm, motivation, self-discipline, punctuality, responsibility, dependability, subject knowledge, charisma, sincerity, show of appreciation, humility, communication, inspiration, passion and integrity. Some of the most important qualities are accountability, fiscal responsibility, ethics and strategic focus.

Recognizing these in someone is important to develop them even more. It is very important to try to match the person to the job. What do you want?--Go for it! The real question is more likely what qualities are required for the job that needs to be done and who has these qualities or who can easily develop them.

Ken has been a member of CSI since 1991, is a member of the Florida SW Chapter of the Southeast Region and the Southeast Region’s Institute Director. He is currently Specifications and Quality Assurance Manager for GMA Architects & Planners in Fort Myers. Michael C. Kerner, FASTM, CDT, CSI, is the Code Development Manager with ClarkDietrich Building Systems, the nation’s largest manufacturer of cold-formed steel framing products, metal lath and accessories,

and plastic and paper accessory products. He received a BS Degree in Architecture from The Ohio State University. Michael has an extensive background in Codes and Standards. He is currently, “the immediate past Chairman of
the ASTM C11 Committee on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems” as well as several other ASTM committees related to metal framing products. He and his wife, Joyce, live in The Villages. He relaxes by playing golf, reading, and traveling. Having been “a member of CSI for many years before moving to Florida” he “wanted to continue once I settled into my new
location.”
When asked how he wanted to be involved in the Chapter, Michael said, “I am transitioning into retirement
so I plan on slowing down! I plan on attending meetings.”
HOW DID WE GET HERE? EFFECTS OF THE ECONOMY ON MEMBERSHIP, MYTHBUSTERS EDITION Sheldon Wolfe, FCSI
Among the things that have been blamed for declining membership is the economy.
By the time I was elected to the Institute board, membership had already fallen about
fifteen percent from its peak in the late '90s, and it continued to decline. As we'll see
in a moment, my term of service on the board happened to coincide roughly with the
Great Recession of 2007-2009. Membership did decline during that recession,
though not as much as you might think. It's more significant that in the years leading up to that recession, the
economy was good, yet membership was declining
When I was on the board, and many times since, I have heard members attribute the loss of members to the
economy. While I accept that as a possibility, it seems to me that if the economy does have an impact on
membership, we should regain lost members when the economy improves. I didn't think that was happening, so
I decided to do look at the numbers. Please note that I am not an economic or financial analyst of any sort, but
what I found does seem reasonable. And what did I find? That the economy has had little impact on CSI

Go to https://portal.csinet.org/Profile/Default.aspx, which will take you to the “log in” site where you put in your name, as it’s posted with the Institute, and your membership number. The CSI Home page will come up, then “click” on “update your profile” in the upper left hand corner. That will bring up your Personal info. The list on the left hand side allows you to go in and update those items. Don’t forget to “save” at the bottom of the form. OK, so what if you don’t know how you’re listed, what name, or your membership number. Well, contact me privately and I can get it for you.
