About ABMEC

ABMEC Members Today ABMEC has over 30 members, and collectively they represent over $1 billion of UK export mining equipment and services, and employ more than 1,800 people in the mining sector. The member companies have grown and developed organically as well as through acquisition, ensuring that a full and complete range of mining equipment and services is available for both underground and surface mining. This experienced group of companies designs and supplies mining equipment and services worldwide for the extraction of materials using soft and hard rock mining methods. Members’ expertise also includes quarrying, tunnelling and mining materials such as coal, potash, gypsum and salt. The supply of mining equipment considers the full cycle of the mine, from planning and design to explosives, face extraction, beneficiation, material handling, transport, communication, electrical supply and control to ensure the safe and efficient extraction of material.

History of ABMEC In 1938, there were several associations in existence, formed by the UK mining equipment manufacturers to establish safety standards for equipment used in the coal mining industry. In 1978, these associations combined to form ABMEC, with a view to continuing the development of standards internationally, as well as promoting the export of UK mining equipment. The mandate was to assist member companies to increase their export of mining equipment, predominantly within the coal mining industry. In the late 1970s and early 1980s there were approximately 120 independent member companies and the then National Coal Board (NCB) dominated their equipment supply business. The UK has seen a dramatic decline in its indigenous coal mining industry from over 600 operational coal mines to the present when there are now less than 10. This market reduction forced the member companies to change their strategy to be export-led rather than relying on the UK market.

Standards & Collaboration ABMEC representation has been instrumental in the development of legislation of common European standards for machinery operating within underground hazardous atmospheres ie: coal mining. ABMEC is committed to the development of this legislation in order to achieve a harmonised international standard. Collaborative work is extensive between ABMEC and the UK’s Government Department of Trade and Industry (UKTI) for issues relating to overseas market development. ABMEC is an Accredited Trade Organisation (ATO) within the UKTI and also an accredited contractor to the UKTI. This provides members with information relevant to sales opportunities, and funding for overseas missions and exhibitions.

Structure of ABMECABMEC is a not-for-profit Association, funded by membership subscriptions. It is led by a Director General, Jane Isaacs, who manages the day to day running of the organisation with a team of specialist association staff. A President and Vice President are elected. Both serve in their posts for two years.

General Council The council is made up of 10 member representatives; five standing members from the five companies with the largest turnover of mining equipment and five elected members. Sub-committees exist to assist and develop association policy.

Finance Committee This committee is for budgeting, cash flow and expenditure approval.

Technical Committee This group exists as a forum for member companies producing electrical and non-

electrical equipment. The committee reports and recommends safety issues following accidents or incidents, ensuring the highest product safety of equipment, particularly for those operating in gaseous environments. Standards and certifications are examined and discussed, and representatives on the International Standards committees provide reports and feedback.

Types of Membership Full membership; a company that designs or manufactures mining equipment in the UK, with an ISO9001 quality standard certificate or equivalent. Associate membership; a company providing a service to the mining industry, but does not design or manufacture equipment.

Cost of Membership Full membership; a levy is set according to the amount of turnover apportioned to the mining industry. Associate membership; a set figure, agreed at the AGM.

The Association of British Mining Equipment Companies (ABMEC) is the only British trade body representing the mining equipment companies. Its members design, manufacture and offer services to the global mining industry. With a nationwide membership, ABMEC is the voice of SMEs and larger organisations on worldwide platforms giving individuals the benefits of participating within an organised group. ABMEC supports its members by promoting their products and services worldwide, using several different media, including the Internet, trade missions and exhibition services.

Processing and refining capabilities are known to be the best in the world; UK metallurgists are leaders in conventional mineral processes, such as flotation, crushing, screening and sizing.
