In light of the recent events with the Zika Virus, the District is providing a toolkit for school site and non-school site administrators that contains procedures and protocols that promote the reduction of the spread of mosquito borne illnesses. The toolkit was developed in collaboration with the Florida Department of Health.

On May 26, 2016, Weekly Briefing # 19414 – Reducing the Spread of Mosquito Borne Illnesses was

issued.

the M-DCPS portal.

Outdoor workers may be at the greatest risk of exposure to the Zika Virus, which is primarily spread through the bites from infected mosquitoes.

Those employees who are pregnant and have concerns may contact the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade at 305-324-2400. In addition, pregnant employees are also encouraged to seek the medical advice of their health care provider.

If any employee is requesting to take a leave, they can contact the Office of Retirement, Leave, and Unemployment Compensation at 305-995-7051.

Administrators should ensure that the following mosquito control activities are implemented at their respective sites.

Conduct a physical assessment of your facility three times a week and be vigilant of containers which may have standing water containing mosquitoes, or mosquito larvae.

Drain standing water from all containers, including rain gutters (this includes the removal of debris to allow for proper drainage). Please keep in mind that containers can range in size from a bottle cap to a garbage bin. Make sure that containers with lids are maintained closed. If a lid is missing or damaged from a garbage bin, please report this anomaly to Facilities Operations, District Inspections at 305-995-1550.

In the event that there is standing water that has been there for more than four (4) consecutive days and cannot be manually drained, please submit a work order request to Facilities Operations, Maintenance, for assistance. You may contact Work Order Control/Maintenance Customer Service at 305-995-7777.

Empty and clean birdbaths at least twice a week.

Discard unused bottles, cans, broken pots, and other debris.

Make sure doors and windows closed tightly and that torn and ripped screens are repaired.

Administrators should encourage staff, parents/guardians, and students to implement the following recommendations for their personal protection in reducing the spread of mosquito borne illnesses.

Encourage and share the following with staff, parents/guardians, and students:

Staff and students should cover their skin with clothing when they are outside and when mosquitoes are active.

Staff, parents/guardians, and students should wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves outside.

Staff, parents/guardians, and students who decide to apply mosquito repellent should do so before arriving to school and after leaving school. It is recommended that staff and parents/guardians check with their medical provider prior to applying mosquito repellent.

Mosquito repellent CANNOT BE APPLIED AT SCHOOL OR BROUGHT TO SCHOOL. This applies during regular school hours, summer school, before and after school care programs, summer camp, and school sponsored events and field trips.

Due to the recent Zika outbreak in our geographical region, principals are being required to utilize a

liberal approach to the adherence of the school uniform policy. In light of this situation, principals should

exercise flexibility if students are wearing appropriate attire that is not a part of official school uniform.

Pursuant to School Board Policy, 5511 - Dress code and school uniforms: Unless a student’s

uniform constitutes a safety or health hazard, constitutes a distraction, or a disruption of the learning

environment exceptions should be made.

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will work in close consultation with the Florida Department

of Health and Miami-Dade County regarding outdoor activities including physical education, recess, and

after school activities. Should guidance be provided to limit outdoor activities (i.e. practice, physical

education, before and after school, fieldtrips, elementary patrols, service project, etc…), the appropriate

adjustments will be made.

“Drain and Cover.”

The Florida Department of Health has developed the “Spill the Water” campaign which includes lessons

for elementary school, middle school, and high school students. The campaign includes lessons that can

be utilized by teachers with short videos.

Teachers in Pre-K through 12th grade are to implement their grade appropriate lesson from the Florida Department of Health’s Teacher Toolkit | “Spill the Water” http://www.floridahealth.gov/diseases-and-conditions/spill-the-water/_documents/teachers-tool.pdf. It is recommended that teachers teach the appropriate grade level lesson referenced on the flyer during the first week of school. Teachers can access their lesson by simply opening the electronic flyer, scrolling to their grade level, and then clicking the hyperlink on the flyer.
